Google Tried to Make 'Star Trek' Communicators a Reality

Posted: 23 Nov 2015 10:00 PM PST

Star Trek has long inspired people all over the world to chase the series' fictional science and make it a reality. Universal translators, virtual reality holodecks, and even the medical diagnosing marvel that is the tricorder may not be quite as common place in our world as they are in Spock's, but there are prototypes for all of these things and more. And apparently Google's got a few of them hidden around their offices. Google's already in early development on their own tricorder, but that's not the only Star Trek gadget they've toyed with. Apparently they tried to replicate the show's iconic communicators. No, not those bulky flip devices that Captain Kirk would use (we already have cell phones, of course), but the later ones that were embedded in...

See Why the Original Version of 'Skyfall' Was Much Darker

Posted: 23 Nov 2015 07:00 PM PST

Even though the James Bond series has moved on to SPECTRE, which is now the 8th highest-grossing movie of the year worldwide, there's still much to discuss about the previous installment. Thanks to the new book Some Kind of Hero: The Remarkable Story of the James Bond Films, we learn that the original incarnation of what became Skyfall was actually much darker. Here's what we know: Who were the original writers for the 23rd James Bond movie? Peter Morgan, who earned Oscar nominations for his scripts for The Queen and Frost/Nixon, collaborated with franchise regular Neal Purvis and Robert Wade. What was it called? Once Upon a Spy. Why did Morgan leave the production? Morgan's departure was first revealed after Sam Mendes signed on as director, but...

Posted: 23 Nov 2015 05:30 PM PST

The 2016 Sundance Film Festival decided to drop a little pre-Thanksgiving treat this year, choosing to announce the slate of midnight movies premiering at the festival this January.  Notable stand-outs include Kevin Smith's Yoga Hosers (pictured above), starring Smith and Johnny Depp's daughters as a pair of convenience store clerks who uncover some ancient evil buried beneath their store (Smith says its like Clueless meets Gremlins), as well as Rob Zombie's 31, in which the musician-turned-director returns to the Halloween holiday for another tale involving five friends held hostage in a place called Murder World.  Check out the films below. 31 / U.S.A. Watch: This New 'Zootopia' Trailer Reveals the Worst Possible DMV Visit Ever

Posted: 23 Nov 2015 04:00 PM PST

This week Disney will release Pixar's The Good Dinosaur, which imagines a world where dinosaurs are the most civilized species on earth. But one movie about animals starting their own societies isn't enough, and so next year we'll also be getting Zootopia. From the Disney Animation Studios team behind Tangled and Wreck-It Ralph, Zootopia goes one step further than The Good Dinosaur and presents a world where there are no people whatsoever. How will it work? Check out the new trailer below. So, as it turns out, it's actually pretty simple. Animals walk upright, they talk, and they've got human jobs, only they still have their animal personalities. And, yes, the DMV still sucks.  Here's a more detailed synopsis... The modern mammal...

Watch Emma Stone and Jon Hamm Audition for 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'

Posted: 23 Nov 2015 02:30 PM PST

On the most recent episode of Saturday Night Live, director J.J. Abrams appeared in a filmed segment to introduce screen tests for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. What follows is a hilarious montage of scenes featuring SNL cast members doing spot-on imitations of a variety of actors, sometimes alongside the real-life stars of the movie, Daisy Ridley and John Boyega. Check it out below.   We especially liked Bobby Moynihan as George Lucas, who makes multiple attempts to use "the Force" to get what he wants, and the way that Leslie Jones concludes the segment, as well as the off-screen directions given by Abrams. And we absolutely loved the appearance of two special guest stars. Emma Stone, who surely knows a thing or two about casting in giant franchises from...
