A Freaky Look Back at the Entire 'Friday the 13th' Franchise

Posted: 13 Nov 2015 08:30 PM PST

Today is Friday the 13th, but it doesn't have to be unlucky if you are an old-school slasher film fan. Jason Voorhees—the unstoppable killer with a penchant for dispatching teens who engage in premarital sex—has been painting the big screen red since 1980. We learn in the original film that Friday the 13th was also Jason's birthday, so blow out some candles for the big guy and have a Friday the 13th marathon with the 12 films (!) in the frightening franchise. (Note: That marathon is now a lot easier to enjoy thanks to the Blu-ray box set Warner Bros. released containing all 12 movies. Read our review here.) Friday the 13th: Jason Voorhees is not the killer in director Sean S. Cunningham's 1980 original, a fact that got Drew Barrymore in a lot of...

Comics on Film: Will 'Deadpool' Be Better as an 'X-Men' Spin-off?

Posted: 13 Nov 2015 07:00 PM PST

After years of developmental issues we're now just about three months away from seeing Deadpool on the big screen in his own solo adventure. Marvel's Merc With a Mouth has been one of Marvel's hottest commodities for years now. His ongoing series continues to attract top-tier comic book talent. Sheer demand got the character his own video game release back in 2013 (which heads to the Xbox One and PS4 next week). Every day it seems like the foul-mouthed, lovable assassin penetrates the public consciousness a little bit deeper. The release of his film will be a long time coming, but it also comes with some complications. Although he's a Marvel character, Deadpool himself is considered a commodity of the X-Men film...

New 'Allegiant' Trailer Finally Lets Out the Funky Sci-Fi Side of 'Divergent'

Posted: 13 Nov 2015 05:30 PM PST

So far The Divergent Series has had a bit of a problem breaking out beyond its pre-existing fanbase. Sure, it's been a modest success for Lionsgate (they'd have stopped making sequels if it wasn't), but it hasn't really made a dent in pop culture the way other young adult movies have. Part of the problem is that the world of Divergent looks like a generic version of The Hunger Games. All the buildings are crumbly and most everyone mopes around sad about their place in life. There's an elite class whose motives are suspect and our young, reluctant hero finds her way into their world and learns the reality she thought she knew is even more complicated. It's Dystopia 101. But, now at its third movie in the franchise, The Divergent Series finally looks...

The Last Horror Blog: Play Trailer Catch-Up With 'Minutes to Midnight' and 'The Unkindness of Ravens'

Posted: 13 Nov 2015 04:00 PM PST

Gunnar Hansen passes away-- 2015 has been a rough year for horror fans in the death department. With many of us just coming to terms with the passing of genre icon Wes Craven, we’ve learned that Gunnar Hansen died on Saturday after a bout with pancreatic cancer. Best known as Leatherface in Tobe Hooper’s seminal Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Hansen went on to numerous other roles in horror cinema -- and became a fan-favorite on the convention circuit. He was 68 years old.   Get ready for a New Year’s bloodbath in Minutes to Midnight trailer -- At this stage of the game, there’s been a slasher movie made for pretty much every holiday you can think of, but that doesn’t mean I won’t sit down and enjoy a good stalk-and-kill flick centered...

Movie News: Doug Liman to Direct 'X-Men' Spinoff 'Gambit'; Patricia Arquette Joins 'Toy Story 4'

Posted: 13 Nov 2015 01:00 PM PST

Gambit: Last month, we heard Edge of Tomorrow and Bourne Identity director Doug Liman was one of the possibilities to take over the X-Men spinoff Gambit, following Rupert Wyatt's departure. Now Liman is finalizing a deal to helm the comic book movie, which stars Channing Tatum as the card-tossing titular mutant. The movie is still expected to hit theaters in less than a year, on October 7, 2016. [THR]   Toy Story 4: Recent Academy Award winner Patricia Arquette is joining fellow Oscar-caliber talents Tom Hanks and Joan Cusack for the next Toy Story sequel. The Boyhood actress won't be playing a toy, however. She's reportedly voicing a "laid-back" mom described as a "hippie." Arquette has actually never done...

New 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' TV Spot Features Another Classic Character

Posted: 13 Nov 2015 11:00 AM PST

One more minute-long TV spot for Star Wars: The Force Awakens premiered Thursday, and while there's a smattering of new footage -- including a revelatory shot near the end where Finn tries to fight a stormtrooper with a lightsaber only to learn he has a shield protecting him from the weapon -- one of the nerdier moments for old school Star Wars fans will be in seeing our first glimpse of what looks to be a classic character from the original trilogy: Admiral Ackbar. You can see what looks like Ackbar off to the right of the image above (click to enlarge), which appears to be of a new rebel base commanded by now General Organa (no longer Princess Leia), played by Carrie Fisher. Watch the full TV spot below. We also get a nice Han Solo moment in there, in which he...
