Comics on Film: Can a 'Flash' Movie Succeed Alongside the Acclaimed TV Series?

Posted: 20 Nov 2015 07:30 PM PST

As most comic book fans are likely to agree, it's never been a better time to love superheroes and head to the movies. Comic book characters account for much of the business done in theaters' busiest season, and the influx of new films based on the characters of DC Comics will soon join the ranks of Marvel's blockbusters by introducing another cinematic comics-based universe for fans to enjoy. Television is also proving to be an ever-expanding realm of superheroes, with acclaimed Marvel-based shows on ABC and Netflix, with popular DC-based shows now appearing on the CW, Fox, and CBS. One of the more popular TV series to come down the pike is The Flash, starring Grant Gustin as the forensic scientist-turned-speedster in a portrayal that's made even the most...

Remember When... The 'Supergirl' Movie Made Us Think We'd Never See a Supergirl TV Show?

Posted: 20 Nov 2015 06:00 PM PST

Comic book fans and regular folk alike have been enjoying Supergirl on CBS this fall, in which Superman's plucky cousin embarks on her own career of superheroism. So far, the show is upbeat and fun, and it has a smart attitude about how it handles the subject of gender. It's a far cry from Supergirl: The Movie, which opened this week in 1984 to the great embarrassment of everyone involved. And of everyone who saw it. Which wasn't a large group. The misbegotten spinoff of the hugely successful Superman movies made just $14.3 million, a flop worse than this year's Fantastic Four, even adjusting for inflation. The version shown in North American theaters was 20 minutes shorter than the European one, but both were poorly received. It was a disaster. Supergirl was...

See What Wonder Woman Would Have Looked Like In George Miler's 'Justice League' Movie

Posted: 20 Nov 2015 04:30 PM PST

Click to enlarge Mad Max: Fury Road may not exist if director George Miller had actually gotten his Justice League: Mortal movie off the ground. It was a project he began developing at Warner Bros. in the mid 2000s, but it ended up getting stuck in development mud during a writer's strike and never got the traction it needed to happen. On the one hand, it's a bummer because a Justice League movie from George Miller would be something to behold. On the other, it's a relief that Warner Bros. didn't just shove the movie forward with a weak script and a cheapened budget. Plus, had it been a big hit and started a new franchise, Miller may never gotten around to making Fury Road. The movie did progress far enough in development that it was fully cast. D.J. Cotrona as...

Watch: A New Robert De Niro Movie Just Debuted On Facebook

Posted: 20 Nov 2015 03:00 PM PST

Robert De Niro is everywhere these days. He's got one new movie, Heist, that opened theatrically last Friday. Another new movie, Dirty Grandpa, has a brand new NSFW trailer online this week. And here's yet another movie, titled Ellis, which debuted on Facebook, free to stream.  Ellis, which premiered last month at the New York Film Festival, is a 14-minute short starring the actor as the ghost of all immigrants who passed through Ellis Island and all those who couldn't. Directed by the street artist known only as JR, it's a film that is semi-documentary in its tour of the island's old hospital and poetic in the voiceover narration spoken by De Niro as he walks its halls.  The script was written by Eric Roth, best known...

Your Guide to 'Justice League Dark' and How It Fits Into the Larger DC Universe

Posted: 20 Nov 2015 01:30 PM PST

Justice League Dark is a comic book property that holds tremendous possibilities for a movie version. Guillermo Del Toro departed the project back in June, but the latest word from JoBlo is that Fede Alvarez, known for the ferocious Evil Dead remake, and the team of Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado, who made the grueling indie horror movie Big Bad Wolves, are the top contenders to direct. The report also says the project is currently titled Dark Universe. That news arrives after casting possibilities were circulated recently, so we decided to round up everything we know about the movie so far.   How does the movie fit into the DC universe? The superhero team was first assembled by DC Comics in November 2011. The premise was that the team would include the more...
