New on DVD/Blu-ray: Amy Schumer Is a Trainwreck, Schwarzenegger Is a Terminator, and Nicolas Cage Is a... Ghost Hunter?

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 10:00 PM PST

Arnold Schwarzenegger goes back to the future Terminator Genisys: As I said in our post premiering a clip from this week's Blu-ray, Terminator Genisys "may just be one of the most fascinating franchise movies ever made. It's a sequel that's also a prequel, and then a sidequel, but also a near-total reboot with its cast, despite using all of the same characters we first met 25+ years ago. It takes place in the future, past, and near-present, with a story that spans decades but, perspective-wise, unfolds over a few days." That said, everything that makes Terminator Genisys so unique is also what makes it so frustrating. The story is all over the map, and its charging pace means it never really has time to earn its own spin on all these characters...

New 'The Finest Hours' Trailer: Chris Pine Leads the Greatest Coast Guard Rescue in History

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 08:30 PM PST

Appropriately dropped on Veteran's Day, the trailer for The Finest Hours showcases the bravery of one of the most unsung branches of the U.S. Armed Forces: the Coast Guard. Based on a true story, the movie depicts what it claims in its tagline was "the most daring rescue mission in U.S. Coast Guard history." Here are the facts behind the film:   It's about the SS Pendleton rescue On February 18, 1952, both the former Marine Corps tanker Pendleton and the oil tanker Fort Mercer broke in two off the coast of Massachussetts during a nor'easter storm. The U.S. Coast Guard rescued 70 of the 84 officers and crew of the two vessels, which were 40 miles apart. They initially responded to only Fort Mercer, as Pendleton's radio...

Joss Whedon Has a Mysterious New Musical in the Works

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 07:00 PM PST

Joss Whedon rose to the challenge of making a sequel to The Avengers and created Avengers: Age of Ultron, which proved to be a tremendous success with moviegoers worldwide, earning in excess of $1.4 billion at the box office. Before it was released, however, it was apparent that the pressures of making the movie as good as possible, not to mention the responsibilities of helming a project with a staggering (reported) production budget of $250 million, were wearing on the director. Months before, Whedon had decided to step away from making any further Avengers adventures, and as of April, he had no specific plans for any future projects. With six months of rest and time away from Hollywood, his creative juices have evidently been rejuvenated. This week he visited the...

Why You Might Not See a 'Peanuts Movie' Sequel Anytime Soon

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 05:30 PM PST

The Peanuts Movie cruised into theaters this past weekend chock-full of those old school awww-shucks sensibilities, and when the snowflakes cleared the film had earned more than $45 million -- a surprising amount considering it opened opposite SPECTRE. So its success means we're totally getting another Peanuts movie, right?  Well, maybe not. 20th Century Fox only had the rights to make one Peanuts movie, as the estate of Peanuts creator Charles Schulz heavily guards the use of these characters. When asked about a potential follow-up, Jean Schulz, the cartoonist's widow, noted that "this one took eight years. So maybe we'll talk about it then."  So could it really be another eight years before we see the Peanuts gang back up on the big...

Harrison Ford Wants to Play Indiana Jones Again (and No, He Doesn't Care Who Shot First)

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 04:00 PM PST

As part of a big Star Wars spread in their newest issue, Entertainment Weekly sat down with Harrison Ford at his airplane hanger to talk about Han Solo, Indiana Jones and everything in-between (including some funny teasing of Star Wars creator George Lucas).  Here are five things we learn in the interview:   1. Ford wants to play Indiana Jones again We've been hearing about another Indiana Jones movie for awhile now, but so far Disney nor Lucasfilm has made an official announcement regarding either a sequel or a reboot of the franchise. One thing we do know, though, is that despite being in his seventies, Ford is definitely down to reprise the character for another go-round. “Oh, yeah. Yeah, I’d love to do another Indiana Jones,” he told...

'SPECTRE' Has Broken Two Guinness World Records

Posted: 11 Nov 2015 02:30 PM PST

The latest James Bond movie has broken a few box office records since its release, including the one for biggest opening of all time in the UK. But SPECTRE, which also topped the box office in the U.S. over the weekend, has achieved some other feats that don't have to do with theatrical performance. The movie officially features the largest film stunt explosion in history, as acknowledged by Guinness World Records. The honor specificlly goes to effects supervisor Chris Corbould (who is also an Oscar winner for Inception and nominee for The Dark Knight) for creating the esteemed sequence. Taking place in Erfoud, Morocco, the blast had a total yield of 68.47 tonnes of TNT equivalent and was the result of detonating 8,418 litres of kerosene with 33 kg of powder explosives...
