November Geek Guide: The Dark Knight Returns (Again), A TIE Fighter Tie, And More Stuff to Look For This Month

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 11:00 PM PST

When it comes to movies from the geekier side of Hollywood, November tends to be a bit of a slow period, falling between the rush of Halloween sci-fi and horror fare and the bigger-budget “event” films released around the holidays. That trend holds true this year, with only a few major features and lower-profile projects to take note of, but fortunately there's more than enough books, home-video releases, and other assorted geekery to keep you busy right through 'til December. Here are ten things to make sure you have on your radar this month:   Dark Knight III: The Master Race #1 Fans of the current state of the DC Comics cinematic universe owe a lot to Frank Miller and The Dark Knight Returns, his 1986 comic-book series that imagined a world in...

Watch Arnold Schwarzenegger Explain How He Got In Shape for 'Terminator Genisys'

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 09:30 PM PST

Terminator Genisys may just be one of the most fascinating franchise movies ever made. It's a sequel that's also a prequel, and then a sidequel, but also a near-total reboot with its cast, despite using all of the same characters we first met 25+ years ago. It takes place in the future, past, and near-present, with a story that spans decades but, perspective-wise, unfolds over a few days. Now of course people can argue until the time-traveling cows come home about how well all of those different ingredients work together, but it's easy to agree on one thing: There's never really been anything quite like it before. Aside from the narrative complexity of weaving together a unifed story across all of these alternate timelines, Terminator Genisys also has another big...

Reel TV: 'Mystery Science Theater 3000' Is Trying to Kickstart Its Way Back to Life

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 08:00 PM PST

Considering new home video releases of Mystery Science Theater 3000 still hit store shelves every couple weeks, it kind of seems like the show that loved to lovingly mock bad sci-fi movies never actually went away. It hasn't produced a new episode in over 15 years, however. The only reason those box sets keep coming out is because the show churned out 197 episodes during its 11-year run and they're slowly getting released on DVD. Mystery Science Theater 3000's cancelation way back in 1999 doesn't have to be permanent, though. This is the age of crowdfunding, after all. If things like Veronica Mars and Super Troopers can find a second life by going straight to the fans, why can't MST3K?  The show's creator Joel Hodgson is spearheading the...

Shia LaBeouf's Next Oddball Piece of Performance Art Is Happening Now -- And You Can Watch!

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 03:53 PM PST

If you've got nothing else to do for the next several hours, Shia LaBeouf is back at it with his next head-scratching piece of performance art (remember #IAmSorry?), and it involves the actor watching a marathon of all his movies in reverse order.   And this time you get to get in on the fun from your own living room! Dubbed #ALLMYMOVIES, there's a small website listing the location of the marathon (the Angelika Film Center in New York City), noting it's free for all to attend -- so if you're in NYC and got some time to kill, head on down. At the website you can also stare mindlessly at a livestream of LaBeouf as he watches all his movies, beginning with this year's Man Down and potentially ending with the 1998 TV movie Breakfast with...

'Snowpiercer' Director's Next Movie Will Be Netflix's Most Expensive Original Yet

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 03:30 PM PST

Netflix may just prove to be one of the most forward-thinking companies of the millennium. They started as a simple DVD delivery service, and even back then many doubted their ability to compete with local rental places like Blockbuster since it would take days for movies to reach customers. Then when they started streaming movies, industry analysts said it was just a niche fad that would never become the mainstream way to watch a movie or TV show. When they started making their own movies in earnest, people assumed Netflix' commitment would be relatively minor, making only cheap indie movies and documentaries. They haven't even released too many of those originals yet (Beasts of No Nation being their highest profile one to-date), and already Netflix is going bigger...

Which of These Actresses Should Play the 'Baywatch' Leading Lady?

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 02:00 PM PST

We already know that Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron are set to star in a big-screen version of Baywatch, the iconic television show that immortalized David Hasselhof and an army of good-looking lifeguards wearing well-fitting swimsuits while running in slow motion on a California beach. But who will snare the female lead for the movie, to be directed by Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses)? The original TV show featured women in prominent roles, including Pamela Anderson, Erika Eleniak, Yasmine Bleeth, and Alexandra Paul. Since Efron was added this past August, several names have already been floated: Kelly Brook, Kate Upton, and Charlotte McKinney. The plot is said to revolve around a by-the-book lifeguard (Johnson) who is teamed with a "rule-flouting hothead" (Efron) to save...

Let us know what you think of the first...
