Julia Roberts Reveals the Dark Places She Went to for 'Secret In Their Eyes'

Posted:

'Secret in Their Eyes Interview - Julia Roberts"Pretty Woman." "Notting Hill." These are the types of movies and roles in which audiences are used to seeing Julia Roberts.

But for her new thriller, "Secret In Their Eyes," the Oscar-winner steps outside her comfort zone (and her fans') playing a mother on a FBI task force that's sent to a homicide, only to discover that the victim is her daughter. It's arguably the most emotionally raw performance of Roberts' career, and she recently sat down with Moviefone to discuss the challenges she faced bringing such a vulnerable character to the screen.

"Secret" hits theaters Nov. 20.

'The Soup' Canceled After 22 Seasons

Posted:

The Soup"The Soup" will no longer be dishing up pop culture snark.

E! announced that the long-running clip show will end after 22 seasons on Friday, Dec. 18. The show began its life in 1991 as "Talk Soup" with host Greg Kinnear. The network revamped and renamed the show in 2004 when current host Joel McHale took over.

"The Soup" skewered everything in pop culture, from reality personalities to talk shows, and McHale memorably spoofed actor David Caruso many times.

"We are incredibly proud of the long-running success of 'The Soup.' 'The Soup' has delivered countless laughs and unforgettable episodes, and we are grateful to the talented team's fearless wit and clever approach week after week," said Jeff Olde, EVP of programming and development for E! in a statement. Joel took the show to new heights for more than a decade, and his irreverent humor and unique brand of comedy as captured so perfectly on 'The Soup' will be missed."

'Now You See Me 2' Trailer Has Magic AND Daniel Radcliffe

Posted:

Now You See Me 2"Now You See Me" pulled off an improbable, but dazzling trick: Getting itself a sequel.

The 2013 magician heist movie was not, shall we say, well-received by critics, but it earned over $350 million worldwide. Now, Summit has released the trailer for the sequel, "Now You See Me," and it brings back the Four Horseman for more trickery.
After outwitting the FBI last time, and gaining the love of the public for their Robin Hood-style antics, the Horsemen (Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, and Lizzy Caplan) return for a big comeback performance. Unfortunately, a tech magnate (Daniel Radcliffe) bullies them into pulling off what sounds like an impossible heist. They'll need all their magic skills to pull it off and reveal the mastermind behind the whole dastardly plan.

The sequel looks much in line with the original, with Mark Ruffalo, Michael Caine, and Morgan Freeman all reprising their roles. We'll see if it can make moviegoers' money disappear like the first one did.

"Now You See Me 2" opens June 10.

Meg Ryan Romantic Comedies, Ranked From Worst to Best

Posted:

Meg Ryan is undoubtedly one of the all time greats on the romantic comedy scene. The bright-eyed blonde won everyone over when she hilariously moaned in faux ecstasy and then returned to a deadpan sandwich bite in that famous deli scene and we've been watching ever since. Ryan has been falling in love on screen since the '80s, but not all of her movies are quite as good as "When Harry Met Sally." Check out our gallery of Meg Ryan's rom-coms, ranked from worst to best.

Rebel Wilson Helps Dakota Johnson With Dating in 'How to Be Single' Trailer

Posted:

How to Be SingleDating in New York City comes with so many rules, you basically need a guide to get you through it.

Dakota Johnson finds just such a guide in Rebel Wilson in this trailer for "How to Be Single." Johnson plays Alice, who's re-entering the dating scene after a breakup. She gets all sorts of advice from pal Robin (Wilson), like the proper way to text guys, the need for a good wax, and how to quickly recover from a hangover (Pedialyte FTW!).
The movie - based on a book by Liz Truccillo, who co-wrote "He's Just Not That Into You" - looks like a fun, flirty, slightly dirty rom-com perfect for Valentine's Day weekend viewing. And the cast is filled with many of our favorites, from Alison Brie to Damon Wayans Jr. to Leslie Mann.

"How to Be Single" opens Feb. 12.

'Heartbroken' Kurt Sutter Takes Out Ad to Announce End of TV Series

Posted:

2015 Summer TCA - FXKurt Sutter did not wait for FX to cancel "The Bastard Executioner." He did it himself, posting an ad in various entertainment magazines to announce the end of the mostly unwatched show.

This is the ad he posted in The Hollywood Reporter:
The "Sons of Anarchy" creator told THR he sent an e-mail to the cast and crew of "The Bastard Executioner," so they weren't blindsided by the ad.

"It's fantastic to get a good review [or] an award, but at the end of the day the only thing that matters, really, is numbers," Sutter told THR. "I'm not the guy sitting in my ivory tower spitting sh-t out and not caring if anyone is watching. ... I don't want to write something that nobody's f-ing watching." And not enough people were watching the 14th century drama, which co-starred Sutter's wife, Katey Sagal. As THR reported, the show fell from 4 million combined weekly viewers for its September 15 premiere to 1.9 million for episode six. Season 1 ended on November 17.

"Oh, I'm heartbroken," Sutter admitted to THR. "Beside the obvious - pride and all that sh-t - it's an epic mythology, and I really love the themes and every place that we were going to go with it. So I'm going to miss that. But creatively, there is a lot of stuff I want to do."

In terms of what went wrong, Sutter speculated that "the mythology was a little too dense for some people" and there's "a glut of period pieces on right now, and I'm sure timing has something to do it." But he figured that, a year from now, people will be wondering why he didn't make more episodes. "I mean, I get so many people telling me they're on episode four of 'Sons.'"

Yeah, maybe it'll become a cult hit, leaving fans wanting more. That's not a bad way to end a show's run.

'The Huntsman: Winter's War' Trailer Has Frozen Emily Blunt, Hot Jessica Chastain

Posted:

The world of "Snow White and the Huntsman" is back -- minus Kristen Stewart, but plus Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain. (Upgrade?)

A title like "The Huntsman: Winter's War" sounds so manly even Ron Swanson might approve, but the first trailer shows this is a movie all about girl power. Literally. Emily Blunt and Charlize Theron play sisters -- sexy wicked sisters -- and they are here to drop a magic mic on the kingdom.

Universal's trailer starts with the question, "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the most powerful of them all?" and shows us Emily Blunt's Ice Queen Freya. (Might as well just call her Elsa.) She's a newbie to the "Huntsman" world, along with Jessica Chastain as a warrior named Sara, and they join returnees Charlize Theron as Evil Queen Ravenna, and -- almost an afterthought -- Chris Hemsworth as The Huntsman Eric.

Here's the trailer:

And here's the detailed synopsis from Universal:

Long before the evil Queen Ravenna (Theron) was thought vanquished by Snow White's blade, she watched silently as her sister, Freya (Blunt), suffered a heartbreaking betrayal and fled their kingdom. With Freya's ability to freeze any enemy, the young ice queen has spent decades in a remote wintry palace raising a legion of deadly huntsmen-including Eric (Hemsworth) and warrior Sara (Chastain)-only to find that her prized two defied her one demand: Forever harden your hearts to love.

When Freya learns of her sister's demise, she summons her remaining soldiers to bring the Magic Mirror home to the only sorceress left who can harness its power. But once she discovers Ravenna can be resurrected from its golden depths, the wicked sisters threaten this enchanted land with twice the darkest force it's ever seen. Now, their amassing army shall prove undefeatable...unless the banished huntsmen who broke their queen's cardinal rule can fight their way back to one another."

It sounds like both a prequel and a sequel to the 2012 movie. It hits theaters in April 2016.

David Beckham's Son Has Best Reaction to Dad as 'Sexiest Man Alive'

Posted:

Britain Soccer Unicef Match for ChildrenImagine you're a teenage boy and your 40-year-old dad just got named People's Sexiest Man Alive. Former soccer star David Beckham just got the 2015-2016 honors, and he joked to the magazine about the reactions of his four children, Brooklyn, 16, Romeo, 12, Cruz, 10, and Harper, 4. Basically, they were not impressed.

"We kind of laughed about it with the boys," David told People, "and the boys kind of laughed at me and said, 'Really?! Sexiest man alive? Really?'"

His teen son, Brooklyn, has been making a name for himself as a model and photographer (with 5 million Instagram followers) and he gave his dad the hardest time about being named Sexiest Man Alive. "Brooklyn was the one who was like, 'Are you sure it's not me that's meant to be there today?'" Haha. Wait your turn, kid. Just a couple of days ago, Brooklyn joined his father in a charity soccer/football match for UNICEF, showing that he really is following in his father's footsteps.

David made fun of himself, while showing off his new People cover, acknowledging that his kids were now laughing at him:

When People asked for his wife Victoria Beckham's response, he said, "I would hope that she feels this way about me all the time anyway! But she said, 'Congratulations!'"

Congrats, man! Are you happy with this choice or were you hoping to see someone else on the cover?

New 'Game of Thrones' 2016 Spoilers on Winterfell, Jon Snow, Margaery, Sansa

Posted:

"Game of Thrones" Season 6 is almost done filming, and several new teases and outright spoilers have the fandom buzzing. There are always interesting updates posted at Watchers on the Wall -- it is known -- but one juicy bit of Winterfell scoop is below, plus a brief tease on Queen Margaery Tyrell from Natalie Dormer, and an intriguing update from Ian McShane on his one-off role.

*Warning: Major spoilers ahead -- but no promises on the veracity.*

GUESS WHO'S COMING TO WINTERFELL?

On November 16, Watchers on the Wall posted about a scene being rehearsed and filmed this week including Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner), Jon Snow (Kit Harington), Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon), and Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen). Their source said the characters were interacting in Winterfell's courtyard "an there's a great deal of tension." We can imagine. But it gets even more tense when, they added, "a giant turns up at the gates! The giant tries to force its way in and the people inside have to fight it off."

They said they didn't know if it was Wun Wun or another giant, and they weren't sure which episode it was for. WOTW is very reliable so, even though this sounds pretty wild, we can't wait to see how it plays out. That Jon Snow is alive we could all guess, and there were previous spoilers about a major battle featuring Jon and the Northern armies. It's sad to hear of Sansa at Winterfell with Ramsay, since Season 5 ended with Sansa and Theon fleeing the place. But hopefully Ramsay will still get his comeuppance. Littlefinger has a lot to answer for as well, but he didn't seem to know the truth about Ramsay when he stuck Sansa there and went to King's Landing. All in all, this is one spoiler to keep in mind when Season 6 starts.
Britain World Premiere of Cuban FuryGUESS WHO'S COMING BACK?

It's already known that Bran Stark is coming back, and we're expecting to see Rickon and Osha this year too, plus Yara Greyjoy, and even The Blackfish. But who did you never expect to see again? Ian McShane is joining Season 6, and he told Pop Goes the News it's just for "a one-off episode." But apparently he gets a lot done in that episode, giving a hint on his character: "I am responsible for bringing somebody back that you thought you're never going to see again. I'll leave it at that." Jon Snow? But that's what Melisandre is for! Fans apparently think he'll instead be a cross between Septon Meribald and the Elder Brother from the book "A Feast for Crows," with the person coming back possibly being the Hound ... or Lady Stoneheart. It would be exciting to see either back on screen. But where's Gendry? Just curious.

MARGAERY HAS 99 PROBLEMS BUT CERSEI AIN'T ONE

Last but not least, the great Natalie Dormer was recently on "The Late Late Show with James Corden," to promote the final "Hunger Games" movie, and of course she was asked about "Game of Thrones." When asked if Margaery would get revenge on Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey), Natalie said, "I can't tell you very much ... [but] Cersei is the least of Margaery's problems. She's got bigger problems this season." Bigger problems than Cersei? Interesting. More of the power struggle with The Faith Militant? Family problems? Tommen usurped? Does Ser Pounce get sick?

What are you most looking forward to seeing in Season 6, whenever it arrives?

First Look at Sarah Jessica Parker's 'Divorce' Has Us Carrie-d Away

Posted:

2015 New York City Ballet Fall GalaGrab a Post-It and make yourself a note to see Sarah Jessica Parker's return to HBO -- and New York City -- when "Divorce" premieres in 2016.

The first official photo was just revealed and it seems like they are openly courting comparisons to HBO's "Sex and the City." Yawn if you want, but we're fine with that!

SJP's "Divorce" character, Frances, is a stylish New Yorker struggling in her love life, like Carrie Bradshaw. Here's Frances:

She looks pretty familiar, doesn't she? Frances is described as "a woman who suddenly begins to reassess her life and her marriage, and finds that making a clean break and a fresh start is harder than she thought." It's like Carrie after a few years with Big.

The show recently started production in NYC, with SJP as an executive producer in her first major TV role since SATC ended in 2004."Divorce" was created by Sharon Horgan of the British sitcom "Catastrophe," which is another good sign. Thomas Haden Church will play Frances's husband Robert, with Molly Shannon, Talia Balsam, and Tracy Letts as co-stars. No premiere date has been announced yet, but it's joining the 2016 lineup. Do you think HBO should have it follow "Game of Thrones" Season 6? It's a strange transition from King's Landing to NYC (actually, no it isn't) but GoT to "Veep" is already a dramatic tone shift, so it's possible.

Will you check out "Divorce" or are you just not that into it?

The First 'Zoolander 2' Trailer Is So Hot Right Now

Posted:

Magnum, baby! The first full "Zoolander 2" trailer is here, revealing Benedict Cumberbatch -- sans eyebrows -- as the new hottest male supermodel in the world. (No sh-t, Sherlock?) Justin Bieber and Penélope Cruz also co-star in the sequel to the 2001 cult classic.

A ridiculously good-looking "Zoolander 2" teaser was released back in August, but now we see the full extent of the plot and characters. Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson return as Derek Zoolander and Hansel (so hot right now. Hansel). In the 2016 sequel, the duo must go undercover to find out who is trying to kill the world's most beautiful people, including Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato, Usher, Lenny Kravitz, and Miley Cyrus. (Apparently they just want to kill pop singers? Are we really mad?) All of the murdered celebs died doing Derek's signature look.

The trailer also shows the wonderfully strange Benedict Cumberbatch rocking an androgynous Tilda Swinton look, plus Will Ferrell returning as Mugatu (still torturing Todd for his lattes), and Penelope Cruz as an Interpol agent. As Hansel put it, "She's hot. I trust her." Sound reasoning!

Watch the trailer, it is not lamé:

"Zoolander 2," directed by Ben Stiller, is set for a February 12th, 2016 release. Schedule your orange mocha frappuccino viewing parties now.

Best of Late Night TV: Jimmy Kimmel Reveals Sexiest Man Alive, Justin Bieber's NASCAR Race, Conan in Armenia

Posted:

If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.

Jimmy Kimmel had the honor, once again, of revealing People's new Sexiest Man Alive. But first, Jimmy had the audience guess who it might be, hiding the man's face and disguising his voice. The audience first learned that he was taping his spot from London, he has an "accent," he has never been Sexiest Man Alive before, he's married to a celebrity, he's not an actor, he has kids, he has tattoos, and -- the clincher -- he used to be an athlete. After a guess of Nick Carter (?), someone finally asked if it's David Beckham. And it was! David, 40, thanked his parents, his hairdresser, his stylist, and Photoshop for the honor. Jimmy asked if he had anything to say to the "gross, ugly losers like Matt Damon who are not Sexiest Man Alive?" David's classy response: "Maybe next year." Josh Hutcherson was also on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" to promote the last "Hunger Games" movie and he talked about being homeschooled. Turns out, he went to an "awkward" homeschool prom in Kentucky. Josh also recalled the fake ID Kimmel gave Josh when the young'un was first on the show at age 13. They showed a clip from that old appearance. Josh was so cute! Over on "The Tonight Show," there was a four-way special NASCAR relay race outside in Rockefeller Plaza between Jimmy Fallon, Justin Bieber, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and The Roots' Tariq. They each paired up with a driver competing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship -- Jeff Gordon, Kevin Harvick, Martin Truex Jr., and Kyle Busch. It was the coolest nighttime relay race through the Plaza, set to the sounds of girls screaming for Justin. JB won, so that just shows what happens when people Beliebe in you!
Conan O'Brien is in Armenia, so watch him and his assistant Sona visit an Armenian marketplace. Conan proceeds to say a bunch of wrong things, to the delight of everyone. Watch more Armenia videos here. Stephen Colbert, a die-hard fan of Star Wars, has vowed to buy any and all Star Wars products on the market. He showed off his old Luke Skywalker soap belt kit and mocked the new Cover Girl ads. "The Forced marketing integration is strong with this one."
