'Secret In Their Eyes' Writer-Director Reveals How Julia Roberts Changed the Entire Movie

Posted:

'Secret in Their Eyes Interview - Billy Ray
In Hollywood, writer-director Billy Ray is kind of a big deal.

From "Hunger Games" to "Captain Phillips," Ray's scary-good sense of structure and stakes has been entertaining audiences for years. But even filmmakers as talented and successful as Ray are open to receiving story ideas from all sources -- especially when they come from stars like Julia Roberts.

His new film, "Secret In Their Eyes," originally centered on male protagonist on an FBI task force who shows up at a homicide to find that the victim is his wife. But that all changed thanks to the Oscar-winner and "Pretty Woman" star. Watch Ray reveal what Roberts brought to the table to help make this twisted thriller come to life.

'Fantastic Beasts' Will Be Like 'Goblet of Fire,' 'Harry Potter' Producer Says

Posted:

As if news about "Harry Potter" prequel "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" wasn't already exciting enough, there's even more for Potterheads to celebrate: The flick is heavily influenced by the tone of previous "Potter" outing "Goblet of Fire."

David Heyman, a longtime producer on the "Potter" series who's also executive producing "Fantastic Beasts," said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that director Mike Newell's entry in the franchise is the "Potter" flick most similar to "Beasts."

"['Fantastic Beasts' has] got the charm of the fourth," Heyman told EW. " ... [I]t's got the humor of that film. It has the romantic comedy, that fish-out-of-water humor, that very human, natural character comedy."

But if fans are expecting an all-laughter, all the time experience, they'll be disappointed. As Heyman explained to EW, "Beasts" director David Yates has plans to balance the lighter themes with heavier ones.

" ... David is always looking for truthful, human moments, it's never just a gag, he's grounding [the storytelling moments] in a reality," Heyman said. "['Beasts'] is very funny, it's got a big heart, and there's darkness too."

Sounds spectacular.

"Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" is due in theaters on November 18, 2016.

Bette Midler Just Crushed Our 'Hocus Pocus 2' Dreams

Posted:

A sequel to 1993's "Hocus Pocus" has been talked about for years and years (and years), and while there have been some recent rumors that the beloved Disney flick is set for a revival, star Bette Midler just officially crushed our dreams.

In a Facebook Q&A with fans this week, Midler answered a query about whether "Hocus Pocus 2" would ever happen -- and said, in no uncertain terms, that it would not.

"After all these years and all the fan demand, I do believe I can stand and firmly say an unequivocal no," Midler responded.

That's a different tune than the one Midler was singing just a year ago, when the actress said in a Reddit AMA that she would be on board for a sequel, and urged fans to inundate Disney with requests to make it happen. Costars Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy also chimed in with their support for a second flick.

So what changed? It's unclear, though Midler isn't wrong that a lot of time has passed; it's been more than 20 years since the film first hit theaters, and you'd think that if Disney wanted to make another one, they would have already done so. The Mouse House briefly conjured up sequel talk again when they staged a new "Hocus Pocus"-themed show at Disney World this year, but no further announcement ever materialized.

While we're disappointed by Midler's statement, we can't say we're surprised. We'll keep our brooms crossed just in case a miracle happens, but it seems we've seen the last of the Sanderson sistahs.

The 50 Best '90s Movies Ever Made, Ranked

Posted:

Bullet time. DiCaprio. Tarantino. These are just some of the gifts Hollywood's run of '90s movies gave us.

The decade was pretty much "Year One" for several actors-turned-huge stars (think Brad Pitt); it also delivered two of the best movies in the history of time. Sure, not all of the decade's films were pearls (we're looking at you, "Mouse Hunt") but it did give us many a DVD worthy of placement on our shelves.

From "Titanic" to "Clueless," here are the 50 best movies from the '90s, ranked -- based on overall film quality, its cultural impact and legacy, and that ol' chestnut, Editor's Choice.

'Once Upon a Time' Creators Making Horror Series for ABC Family

Posted:

Screening Of ABC's If you love "Once Upon a Time," you're in luck: The show's creators are making a brand new series for ABC Family.

Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, the men behind the hit ABC fairy tale series, are bringing their talents to sister network ABC Family (soon to be Freeform -- and yes, that name is sticking, apparently), but it's going to be decidedly different from the fantasy-flavored "Once." According to Entertainment Weekly, Horowitz and Kitsis are teaming up with "Once" writer Ian Goldberg to create a straight-up horror series for ABC Family, the first time that network has dabbled in the genre. (No, "Pretty Little Liars" doesn't count.)

The show will be called "Dead of Summer," and "is about what happens when summer camp goes wrong -- really, really wrong," according to Karey Burke, executive vice president of programming for ABC Family. And EW says that it has some pretty cool influences: The scuttlebut is that "the show was originally pitched as a 'John Hughes meets John Carpenter' anthology series, with the first season set in 1989." Very intriguing.

Here's the official logline:

Set in the late 1980s, school is out for the summer, and a sun-drenched season of firsts beckons the counselors at Camp Clearwater, a seemingly idyllic Midwestern summer camp, including first loves, first kisses - and first kills. Clearwater's dark, ancient mythology awakens, and what was supposed to be a summer of fun soon turns into one of unforgettable scares and evil at every turn. Part coming-of-age story, part supernatural horror story, "Dead of Summer" is a bold, new series that mixes genres as it examines the light and dark of a summer like no other.

No word yet on when "Dead of Summer" is set to debut, though its title suggests it would make a great late-summer series. Stay tuned.

'My Little Pony' Movie to Gallop Into Theaters in 2017

Posted:

my little pony, friendship is magic, my little pony movie, my little pony: friendship is magicA big-screen version of "My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic" is set to gallop into theaters soon, with Lionsgate and Hasbro announcing that the flick is due out in late 2017.

An official release date of November 3, 2017 was revealed this week for the new "My Little Pony" flick, which will feature many of the same characters as the hit animated series. Favorites including Twilight Sparkle, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, and Rarity will all make an appearance, as will a new Little Pony, voiced by Kristin Chenoweth.

Meghan McCarthy, a writer and producer on "Friendship Is Magic," is penning the flick's screenplay, which is said to focus on the ponies embarking on an adventure to save their home. The crew behind the voices of the series's "Mane 6" stars is also set to join the flick, with actors Tara Strong, Cathy Weseluck, Andrea Libman, Tabitha St. Germain, and Ashleigh Ball all set to reprise those roles. Jayson Theissen is directing.

The flick is set to go up against "Thor: Ragnarok" at the box office, but we hear these ponies have some magic up their sleeves. (And decidedly different audiences.)

This Video Explains Why 'The Hobbit' Trilogy Was Such a Chaotic Mess

Posted:

Do we blame Peter Jackson for how "The Hobbit" trilogy turned out? Do we thank him? Sympathize with him? However you felt about those three movies, this candid behind-the-scenes video from "The Battle of the Five Armies" home release should leave you in awe that anything got made at all.

The video, called "The Problem with The Battle of Five Armies," details the story of how director Peter Jackson jumped into the filmmaking process after Guillermo Del Toro dropped out, and Jackson never had the time to catch up, never mind plan anything, the way he did with "The Lord of the Rings" movies.

As Peter explains at one point, "When you're going on to a set, very complicated, and you're winging it, you've got nothing to go on.... you've got these massively complicated scenes and you're just making it up then and there on the spot." He said he would tell the crew to take an extended lunch for an hour or so, so he could get his head wrapped around things and plot it through. "I spent so much of 'The Hobbit' feeling like I was not on top of it, [due to] the fact that I hadn't much prep and I was making it up as I went along. Even from a script point of view, Philippa [Boyens], Fran [Walsh], and I hadn't got the entire scripts written to our satisfaction, so that was a very high pressure situation."

Peter said he was able to wing it right up until they had to film an intricate battle. They started to do the "Battle of the Five Armies," but the battle itself was still a mystery since there was no plan. "Simply because I didn't know what the hell I was doing," Peter said, rather bluntly. "I mean, there's no medical answer for it. And that's the truth of it. We had allowed two months of shooting for that in 2012, and at some point when we were approaching that, I went to [our producers] and the studio and said: 'Because I don't know what the hell I'm doing now, because I haven't got storyboards and prep... why don't we just finish earlier?'"

It gave him a delay to clear his head and put something together, which explains why "The Battle of Five Armies" was pushed back several months. On top of that, Peter got sick during filming and was gone for something like six weeks, which doesn't sound surprising considering everything on his plate.

What a mess. It explains a lot, but it's frustrating that three potentially classic films were thrown together on the fly. It's amazing that they turned out as well as they did.

Hugh Jackman's '80s Throwback Photo Proves He Never Had an Awkward Phase

Posted:

Montblanc at Watches & Wonders in Hong Kong - PhotocallSomehow, despite the best efforts of Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman was not named the 2015-2016 Sexiest Man Alive. However, the Australian hunk just proved he has always been ridiculously, "Zoolander"-level good-looking, sharing a throwback photo from the 1980s that illustrates his flawlessness. 'Cause, don't forget, NO ONE looked good in the '80s. The '80s were specifically designed to make everyone look awful, especially in hindsight.

But look:

Hugh was born in 1968 and he's now 47, so he was probably in his mid-to-late teens here. He doesn't even have bad '80s hair, or a cheesy '80s swimsuit. It's almost cheating.

Hugh has been traveling the world to promote "Pan," but next on the docket are "Broadway 4D," "Eddie the Eagle," "The Greatest Showman on Earth," and -- of course -- the final "Wolverine" movie. He's not quite Wolverine buff yet in this throwback pic, but the potential is there. Can you imagine if he were as famous at this age as he is now? He'd be stealing the hearts of all the One Direction and Justin Bieber fans.

Who Wins 'Survivor: Second Chance'? Jeremy, Joe, Spencer, Kelley?

Posted:

"Survivor" Season 31 (yes, can you believe it?) is now airing, and "Survivor: Second Chance" is one of the best competitions CBS has ever aired. Maybe it's the returning players, all "losers" hungry for a win, or the many twists that have only improved the gameplay and have yet to feel like desperate gimmicks. It's rare to have so many players pushing to win, with very different strategies, and we can't wait to see who ends up the sole survivor of "Survivor: Cambodia."

Who will it be?

Well, the edits certainly give us some hints. For example, we could've told you it wouldn't be Kelly Wiglesworth even before she was eliminated in Episode 9, since she had almost no screen time, including confessionals. Spencer Bledsoe is still the confessional king. The producers have him narrating the season, like this is his story and everyone else is a supporting player. Then again, Jeremy Collins's edit is starting to pick up, especially once he found his SECOND idol. If he plays them right, and maintains his strong alliance, he is a major threat to win. But what about Joe Anglim? He won the first three immunity challenges and it's possible Abi-Maria Gomes is right and he'll just keep on winning.
There are a couple of things that make us think Jeremy goes very far and could win. Not only has the idea of Jeremy winning come up a few times -- from Kass McQuillen and Ciera Eastin -- host Jeff Probst just gave a strong hint that Jeremy does well.

Here's a portion of Jeff's November 19 Q&A with Entertainment Weekly's Dalton Ross, with Jeff arguing that Jeremy's move to vote out his ally Wiglesworth was smart (whereas maybe it wasn't so smart for Stephen Fishbach):

As for Jeremy, I totally understand Jeremy's move because he trusts Stephen, and this season especially, the premium on trust is at an all time high. Jeremy is playing a very sophisticated long game. Here's the thing that players rarely understand their first time playing - odds are you are going to lose. The odds are not great that you are going to win. If we start with 20 players, 19 of them will lose. That's a 95 percent chance you will lose. Get this in your head: If you play Survivor, you will most certainly lose. Which is why you have to play to WIN. Confused? (Ah, it's easy, says the guy in the blue shirt who has never played a day in his life.)

"Very sophisticated long game." That sounds good for Jeremy. And then there's the bootlist that has been making the rounds since September. It is already off when it comes to the jury, but it was billed as "close to order" and it seems likely that the finalists -- including ones with family visits (fv) -- would be accurate, unless it's intentionally trolling. Always possible.

(Warning: Potential spoilers ahead)

Here's the list:

PreJury (in order)

Vytas
Shirin
PeihGee
Jeff
Monica
Terry (evac)
Woo

Jury (close to order)

Kass
Stephen
Kelly
Ciera
Andrew
Joe
Keith
Abi (fv)
Kimmi (fv)
Kelley (fv)

Final 3

Tasha
Spencer
Jeremy (w)

That gives Jeremy the win, but don't take it for gospel, since it was already wrong about Andrew/Stephen. There are also whispers that maybe Joe does win every immunity, but that may be proven false by the time you read this. Who knows. Basically, no one knows other than the people involved. This list may be accurate about the finalists or it could be an attempt to hide what really happens. "Survivor" wouldn't be "Survivor" without some sneaky, sneaky strategy so we'll just wait and see.

Who do you WANT to see win the million? Still rooting for Kelley Wentworth at this point, but if Jeremy holds onto his alliance and plays his idols well, he'd deserve the win.

'Walking Dead' Spoilers: You Know Who Returns This Week, Here's How

Posted:

And no, we don't mean Voldemort. He's not coming until "The Walking Dead" Season 6 finale.

We're only up to Episode 7, "Heads Up," which airs this Sunday, November 22. That is when many fans expected Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun) to return, based on filming spoilers and the way the first half of the season has been structured. 'Cause you didn't think he was really dead, did you? This is the year of main characters almost dying, or dying but probably not staying dead (see "Game of Thrones" and "The Leftovers").

The Spoiling Dead Fans does a weekly Q&A with spoilers and their latest round shared how Glenn comes back to us. Basically, if you guessed that he hid under the Dumpster, you win the free can of crazy cheese.

Here's that portion of their Season 6, Episode 7 Q&A:

How does Glenn escape?
The old hide under the dumpster trick. Cheap. (Glenn basically waits it out until the walkers leave. Enid spots Glenn first from a roof and throws him some water down after he gets out.)

Does Glenn make it back to Alexandria?
Yes to the outskirts (Glenn releases the balloons he had to signal he survived the mission)

Check out more Q&A spoilers here.

So Enid (Katelyn Nacon) and Glenn both return this week, and even though Enid doesn't quite save Glenn -- the Dumpster of Death saves him -- she is there for some reason. Why did she leave Alexandria to begin with, and will she return with Glenn now? Another question: Will they include Steven Yeun's name in the opening credits or save his name for the Episode 8 midseason finale so as not to spoil the "surprise" of him being in "Heads Up"? But he's probably one of the surprise guests who'll be on "Talking Dead" this week, right?

Badass New Star Wars TV Spot Highlights John Boyega's Finn

Posted:

Just when we think we're done with "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" TV spots, they pull us back in. Each brief preview is a new shot of adrenaline, and the latest puts the focus squarely on John Boyega's Finn.

"You don't know a thing about me," Finn says at the start of the 30-second spot. "What I've seen. We all need to run." We do see him running, along with Daisy Ridley's Rey, and using his lightsaber to fight a stormtrooper. And does he get to pilot the Millennium Falcon there in the end?

There's also some brief comic relief, with Harrison Ford's Han Solo asking Finn, "Sure you're up for this?" His candid reply, "Hell no."

The character of Finn is meant to be a stormtrooper himself, or at least a former one. As Boyega told Entertainment Weekly, "For Finn, he's been raised from the ashes of the Empire. He's been taught about Luke Skywalker, he knows about his history. For him it's like joining the army and then learning about one of the great enemies of your country. It has that effect on him. But in terms of the Force, and the magical stuff that happens, that is the point where Finn kind of questions what is what. What is the Force, what part does Luke Skywalker play in all of this?"

Finn actually ends up with the lightsaber that once belonged to Luke (Mark Hamill), and to Anakin/Darth Vader before him. EW noted that "it was last seen tumbling down an air shaft after Darth Vader sliced off his hand and revealed that he, he was Luke's father. In this film ... it's an important piece of the puzzle that will reveal Luke's fate and whereabouts."

Intriguing... How do you feel about these TV spots: The more the better, or are you hoping they stop so they don't give away too much of the surprise? "The Force Awakens" opens December 18.

Best of Late Night TV: Jennifer Lawrence's 2 Most Embarrassing Moments, Justin Theroux's Eyebrow-Acting Contest

Posted:

If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.

Come dance with Jennifer Lawrence! Jennifer -- actually, "Jennifer's my father, call me Jen" -- was on "The Tonight Show" Wednesday night to promote the final "Hunger Games" movie, and you had to know Jimmy Fallon was going to put her to work. They discussed their shared habit of falling down a lot, and Jen insisted it's not a shtick. She also shared her two most embarrassing stories, because Jen wouldn't be Jen without endearing, relatable anecdotes: The first involved a woman who was NOT Elizabeth Taylor, but Jen really thought she was; the other involved the real Francis Ford Coppola, her bare feet, and a revealed thong.
On to the dancing! Jen and Jimmy talked about how there's this instructional dance video that airs on QVC at 3 a.m., featuring two dancers who look a lot like the two of them. Cue the "Come Dance With Us!" video, with J&J rocking some amazingly outrageous outfits (those sleeves -- keep them) and showing off dance moves like "Lunchbox Salute," "Bowling Confetti," and "Disco Binoculars." Gold. Obviously, they should really make a dance video and put it on the market.
Speaking of Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth was on "Late Night with Seth Meyers," insisting that Jen does not fall down at purpose. "She is terrible at walking." He told a story of walking around in London with her when one of her heels broke down at the back of a theater. She also fell in Spain and Berlin. "I'm constantly surprised by how much she falls down without trying at all." He just said she's "a clumsy, clumsy girl." Maybe she should skip the long gowns and only wear flats?
Jimmy Kimmel spoofed the extension of the "Fast & Furious" franchise with more prequels and spinoffs by showing a (fake) new trailer from the perspective of fuzzy dice:
Justin Theroux -- who is CRUSHING it over on "The Leftovers" -- was on "The Late Show" and challenged Stephen Colbert to an eyebrow-acting contest. Love it.
This sounds odd, but it's kind of touching. John Cleese told an interesting story about his mother, who was an anxious and depressed woman with a black sense of humor. That was the way he could communicate with her. He didn't want her to be depressed but she'd be "a little bit down this week" for "50 f--king years." To try and cheer her up, he had a moment of inspiration that was a high point of his creativity. When she was about 92, she gave him all these reasons why she didn't want to go on living. He said, if she still feels this way next week, he has a friend in Fulham he can call and he could come down and kill her. She was surprised, then howled with laughter. Justin Bieber did Carpool Karaoke with James Corden before, but here's "Vol. 2," featuring a very interesting conversation about the origin of the "Beliebers."
Last but not least, here are Anthony Mackie and Rainn Wilson talking about their wives. Rainn just celebrated 20 years of marriage. (!) Anthony said he met his wife when he was 7. "She was the meanest person in the world." She used to beat him up and take his lunch money. They got together when he was 28, after they hadn't seen each other in about 20 years.
