DVD Obscura: The New Indie and International Movies You Need to Watch

Posted: 08 Oct 2015 09:00 PM PDT

New Indie: The revelation that older audiences have become a reliable movie-going demographic means that it’s become easier to build big-screen vehicles around the likes of Helen Mirren and Lily Tomlin. Add to that list one of my favorite, underutilized actresses: the great Blythe Danner, who’s front and center in the charming love story I’ll See You in My Dreams (Universal Pictures Home Entertainment). In her first movie lead in 40 years, Danner stars as a widow who’s been comfortably wallowing in a comfortable rut, including a weekly bridge game with her three best pals (Mary Kay Place, Rhea Perlman and June Squibb). A series of unexpected circumstances, including a giant rat in the house, shakes up her existence, leading to friendship with her slacker...

Paramount Launches a YouTube Vault Where You Can Watch Great Movies For Free

Posted: 08 Oct 2015 07:00 PM PDT

Do you like to stream movies for free online? You can find plenty of them on YouTube, though not all are legitimate. Fortunately for those of us wishing to respect copyrights, Paramount has a channel featuring tons of its titles in full at no cost. The Paramount Vault, as this new channel is called, has been tested for a few months now, but it's finally going wide. A recently posted "sizzle reel" draws attention to its content, which includes a plethora of clips of favorite movie moments.  The catalog seems pretty random, representing dramas, comedies, Westerns, horror, action, sci-fi, documentary, "classics," etc., a lot of them lesser-quality works like Masters of the Universe, Serving Sara and the first three American...

Disney is doing a lot of housekeeping today and the number one chore on the list is apparently getting all of its various studio calenders in order. Marvel Announces 'Ant-Man and the Wasp,' Plus: Dates For Three New Movies

Posted: 08 Oct 2015 03:45 PM PDT

It's a little hard to believe we've already made it through two whole phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Someone who was only one when the first Iron Man came out will be old enough to see him fight his friends in 2016's Captain America: Civil War-- assuming their parents let them see PG-13 movies, that is. Crazier still, that same kid will be able to buy their own ticket by the time we get to some of the Marvel movies announced today. Time sure does fly. Today's news is that Ant-Man is getting a sequel, only this time it won't be a solo film. Ant-Man and the Wasp is now set to hit theaters on July 6, 2018. Marvel superfans may recognize that as the date previously held by Black Panther. Don't worry, that movie isn't canceled, it'll now...

PSA: 'The Martian' Is Not Based on a True Story

Posted: 08 Oct 2015 03:00 PM PDT

For a great majority of you it may be obvious that The Martian is not based on a true story, as evidenced by the fact that we've never put a human being on Mars. But the Ridley Scott production -- which currently sits atop the box office charts -- worked so closely with NASA while making the film that it's actually confusing enough people into thinking it's based on actual events. The Daily Mail rounds up a host of tweets from moviegoers who either questioned whether or not the movie was based on a real story or overheard others wondering out loud. And just to clear the air here for those still on the fence... no, it is not based on a real story. The Martian is, however, based on a very good work of fiction written by Andy Weir, then marvelously adapted for the...

Sequel Buzz: 'Alien: Paradise Lost' Plot Details; Plus: The Future of the 'Terminator' Franchise

Posted: 08 Oct 2015 01:30 PM PDT

Director Ridley Scott is in a good mood! And why not: The Martian, his most recent production, has received critical acclaim and topped the box office this past weekend. So the filmmaker is ready to talk about his next film, Alien: Paradise Lost, a follow-up to his Alien prequel Prometheus. Scott confirmed that the sequel will begin with survivors Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender on their way to the home world of a mysterious alien race known as the Engineers. In an interview with Awards Campaign, Scott stated: “It’s going to be its own separate thing because they are going to the planet of the Engineers and they are going to see what happened there. It was a disaster. And they will be in that alien craft that takes them there, but with a new group...
