How to Watch a Longer Cut of Quentin Tarantino's 'The Hateful Eight' Two Weeks Early

Posted: 12 Oct 2015 10:00 PM PDT

Even if you don't understand the exact technical intricacies of 35mm, 70mm, and various digital formats, you should trust the filmmakers you love not only know them, but truly care about the difference the production and exhibition method makes for you, the paying customer. People like Paul Thomas Anderson, Christopher Nolan, and Quentin Tarantino don't just care about what medium they shoot their films on (though in the case of all three, it happens to be film), they also care about how people actually see those movies. And just as Nolan and Paramount did with Interstellar, Tarantino's next film The Hateful Eight, shot entirely on 70mm (which provides for a much larger image), will be getting a release in theaters that can still play films on 70mm two weeks before it...

See What the Real People Featured in 'Steve Jobs' Think of the Movie

Posted: 12 Oct 2015 08:30 PM PDT

Without a Ouija board and faith that seances actually work, we're never going to hear what the real Steve Jobs thinks of his own latest biopic, Steve Jobs. As for the rest of the people portrayed in the hit new movie, which was written by Aaron Sorkin and directed by Danny Boyle, plus other relevant individuals, here are some interesting reactions, some positive and some negative:   Steve ("Woz") Wozniak, co-founder of Apple (played by Seth Rogen in Steve Jobs)    "I was shocked and amazed at how good it was in the sense of professional filmmaking," Wozniak, a consultant on the movie, told the BBC. "The acting was just so realistic. In some prior movies, I saw [the actors] simulating Steve Jobs, but they didn't...

Exclusive: See the Crazy Way They Created "Abstract Thought" in Pixar's 'Inside Out'

Posted: 12 Oct 2015 07:00 PM PDT

Pixar's Inside Out arrives on Digital HD and Disney Movies Anywhere (DMA) on October 13 (to be followed by a DVD/Blu-ray release on November 3), and we've got a really cool exclusive behind-the-scenes moment from the movie that's only available if you pick up Inside Out via Disney Movies Anywhere. During one of the film's more inventive sequences, Joy, Sadness and Bing Bong find themselves in need of a shortcut to the Train of Thought in the hopes it'll get them back to headquarters. They decide to cut through the Abstract Thought building despite a warning sign to keep out. And then things get really weird. While creating the sequence, Pixar designers had to figure out a way to give some visual definition to the four stages of abstract thought while still...

Wes Anderson Heads Back to 'Fantastic Mr. Fox' Territory with a Stop-Motion Movie About Dogs

Posted: 12 Oct 2015 06:00 PM PDT

While the majority of the entertainment world obsesses over who will direct the next Star Wars movie or what is going to be Christopher Nolan's next project, there are still people who obsess over the increasingly marginalized world of American art house cinema*. For them, the films of people like the Coen Bros. and Wes Anderson are their Star Wars. We already know what the Coens are doing next (did you see that Hail, Caesar! trailer?), and now we've got a tantalizing tidbit about Anderson's next as well. The Playlist tells us the director of The Grand Budapest Hotel is going back to stop-motion animation for an untitled movie about dogs. As of right now we don't know a ton of details about it, only that it's likely to be different from some other recent...

Big Rumor: Will Mark Ruffalo's Hulk Join Thor in 'Thor: Ragnarok'?

Posted: 12 Oct 2015 04:30 PM PDT

Is Thor about to get a little help from his green buddy in the next Thor movie, due out on November 3, 2017? That's the big superhero rumor today, courtesy of JoBlo, who claim Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner/Hulk will join Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston and Jaimie Alexander in Thor: Ragnarok, extending this new trend of including other heroes in movies that were traditionally solo films.  We're seeing a whole lot of that in next year's Captain America: Civil War, which includes numerous heroes (Black Widow, Ant-Man, Iron Man, Black Panther, to name a few) alongside Chris Evans' Captain America. So it makes sense to see someone like the Hulk -- who was left out of the already packed Civil War -- pop up in the next Thor film, which could probably use the...

8 Great... Seafaring Movie Explorers in Honor of Columbus Day

Posted: 12 Oct 2015 03:16 PM PDT

As we celebrate Columbus Day, our movie-loving thoughts naturally turn to the great seafaring explorers of the past, those intrepid adventurers who courageously sallied forth across boundless bodies of water, hoping to discover new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one had gone before… long before Captain Kirk uttered those words aboard the Starship Enterprise. Christopher Columbus was honored in the United States as far back as 1792, when the 300th anniversary of his landing was celebrated in New York City and beyond. In recent years, protestors have raised questions about whether Columbus is worthy of being honored, especially in view of the devastating effect that colonization had upon indigenous peoples. Thus, it seems appropriate to start with a film that...

Print to Screen: R.L. Stine's 'Fear Street' and George R.R. Martin's 'The Skin Trade' Head to Big and Small Screens

Posted: 12 Oct 2015 03:00 PM PDT

This week sees the theatrical release of Goosebumps, a fun fright flick for families inspired by the work of author R.L. Stine, starring Jack Black. The real-life Stine has written hundreds of books, and that includes dozens of entries in the "Fear Street" series. Now the series is heading to the big screen, according to The Wrap. While the Goosebumps books were intended for somewhat younger readers, the Fear Street series was aimed squarely at teenagers, with greater emphasis on murder mysteries and more explicit violence featured. Set in a fictional small town in Ohio, the books revolve around different characters in each story, though some characters return from time to time. The Goosebumps series also featured a large variety of characters; the screen version...
