Netflix Has No Interest in Sports, But Does Want to Stream 'Star Wars'

Posted:

What will you be watching on Netflix this time next year? It's currently being negotiated. Deadline just shared a report from a conference call Netflix had with Wall Street to try and boost investor confidence after a less-than-impressive Q3 report.

Apparently the topics of news and sports came up, and Deadline said Netflix isn't interested in offering sports matches. However, Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said the likelihood of Netflix offering news to rival Vice "is probably high." But it would be more on the features side, they said, rather than breaking news. There were no further details on that, but it's something to keep in mind in terms of what they may be offering down the road.

Speaking of that, there's still a question mark over whether Netflix will get "Star Wars: Episode VII -- The Force Awakens" in 2016 once its streaming contract with Disney starts. "It's up to Disney. ... It's an ongoing discussion," Sarandos said. As Deadline noted, "As of now, the film - which premieres domestically in theaters on December 18 - would be the last still covered by Disney's expiring deal with Starz."

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings also weighed in on the recent price increase, saying he makes "no prognostication for the future on pricing." (Uh oh.) The execs said the recent bump mostly reflects Netflix's desire to offer more distinct price tiers depending on video quality.

Read more at Deadline. Fingers crossed that Netflix does get "The Force Awakens" but we're still waiting for an answer on why they took away so many horror movies on October 1. Why can't we stream "The Exorcist" this weekend, Netflix?

'Grey's Anatomy' Scoop on Callie's New Girlfriend (Awkward!) and a False Rumor

Posted:

It's a small, small world. On last night's episode of "Grey's Anatomy" Season 12, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) opened the door to meet Callie's (Sara Ramirez) new girlfriend Penny ... who happened to be the same doctor who could've helped to save Derek's (Patrick Dempsey) life last season and instead botched the job. Awkward!

Entertainment Weekly just did its usual Spoiler Room roundup and a "Grey's" fan asked how Meredith is going to react to Callie's new girlfriend. Here's the response, which also includes the debunking of a casting rumor:

How is Meredith going to react to Callie's new girlfriend on Grey's Anatomy? - Kendra
You mean the one who played a role in the death of her husband? In short: "Not well," Sara Ramirez tells me. "It's a challenging discovery. She's going to need a lot of support, and she's going to be reactive. That's going to create some major conflict between a lot of the doctors, including Meredith." Bonus: That rumor about Josh Duhamel guest-starring is totally false.

Sorry, Josh Duhamel! And sorry to Callie for this added drama.

The next episode, "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?" airs Thursday, October 22 and appears to directly pick up the action. Here's ABC's synopsis, which includes the tease, "Maggie deals with an embarrassing issue and everyone finally meets Callie's girlfriend":

In the midst of the sisters' dinner party, Maggie ditches her cooking duties to rush to the hospital. Meanwhile, April steps in to help cook as an attempt to avoid Jackson, and Arizona nervously waits to find out more about Callie's new girlfriend.

This should be interesting, to say the least.

Watch 92 Years of Disney Animation in 92 Magical Seconds

Posted:

Today -- October 16, 2015 -- marks the 92nd anniversary of Disney Animation. Time flies! And so do Peter Pan, Dumbo, and several other memorable Disney characters who've kept us (and our parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents) company since childhood. Pixar just celebrated 20 years of friendship, and Disney followed with this 92-second video with beautiful clips from 92 years of magic.

We see shots from "Cinderella," "Fantasia," "Snow White," "Alice in Wonderland," "101 Dalmatians," "Aladdin," "Sleeping Beauty," "Beauty and the Beast," "The Lion King," "The Little Mermaid," "Pocahontas," "Pinocchio," and many more, ending with a bit of a heart-tugger from Winnie and Christopher Robin. As Entertainment Weekly noted, it's all set to Thomas Bergensen's gorgeous song "Starchild."

Check it out:
Chills! As one fan commented, "that was like seeing my whole life flash before my eyes in 92 seconds." Maybe this is what we see right before we die -- all the Disney movies set to glorious music. No complaints if that's really how we go.

'Star Trek Beyond' Wraps, Zachary Quinto Says Goodbye 'Maybe for the Last Time'

Posted:

"Star Trek Beyond" explored strange new worlds. It boldly went where no film had gone before, at least since 2013's "Star Trek Into Darkness." And now "Star Trek Beyond" has finished principal photography, ahead of its summer 2016 release.

The news was shared by a few of the stars, including Simon Pegg (Scotty) and Zachary Quinto (Spock), and also newbie Sofia Boutella. Here's what they posted, including a video from Zachary that makes us wonder if this is the end for his Spock:

this. maybe for the last time. maybe not.

Maybe for the last time. Maybe not? Hmmm. He's sounding awfully nostalgic already. "Star Trek Beyond" is scheduled for release on July 22, 2016.

Why Major Theaters Are Refusing to Show Idris Elba's New Movie

Posted:

87th Academy Awards - Press RoomThere's an Old School vs. New School stand-off happening in the theater world right now, and Idris Elba is caught in the middle. His new movie, "Beasts of No Nation," is the first major feature film from Netflix and it's being released today (October 16). But Netfilx isn't just keeping the movie to itself, it's also releasing it in theaters ... at least, the ones that will play it.

You may have read that the U.S.'s four largest theater chains -- AMC, Regal, Cinemark, and Carmike -- said they don't plan to show the Cary Fukunaga drama, not because of the content but because of the distribution. They told Variety they don't want to provide screens to films that don't honor the usual 90-day delay between a theater debut and a home entertainment release.

Wired just talked to theater and box office experts to get their takes. "Netflix is not serious about a theatrical release," said Patrick Corcoran, vice president of the National Association of Theatre Owners. "There isn't a real commitment." He added, "The purpose here is PR. They want to qualify for an Academy Award." Wired noted, in order to be considered for an Oscar, the movie needs to screen in theaters on the same day or before the home release. Corcoran said it also didn't go over well when theater owners first heard about Netflix's release plan from a press statement, instead of having distributors negotiate a release with owners ahead of a public announcement.

It kind of seems like the cool clique telling Netflix "you can't sit with us," but there's a genuine fear that this may contribute to the end of movie theaters. In fact, last year at this time, Grantland had a story titled "Is Netflix Trying to Kill the Movie Theater Once and for All With 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2'?" noting that Netflix announced that it would stream that sequel simultaneously to its IMAX theater release. (That release date was pushed to early 2016.)

It's hard to gauge how many viewers would head out to see "Beasts" even if it were in more theaters since, as BoxOffice.com chief analyst Phil Contrino told Wired, "A lot of people subscribe to Netflix and they can watch Beasts of No Nation at home. How many of those subscribers are going to go see it in theaters?" Fair enough. But it looks like at least Landmark is giving the release a shot, with the movie now out in select theaters.
Do you plan to see the movie and, if so, on Netflix or in a theater?

Pixar's '20 Years of Friendship' Tribute May Make You Cry (Again)

Posted:

The Sniffle Monster may just get you again after watching Pixar's latest video, "20 Years of Friendship." It's basically a lead-in to another preview for "The Good Dinosaur," based around Pixar's long history of celebrating friendships.

As the synopsis notes: "A single friendship can change everything. From Toy Story to The Good Dinosaur, join us in celebrating 20 years of friendship from Pixar Animation Studios."

The video tugs at our heartstrings with soaring music and shots from "Toy Story," "Ratatouille," "Up," "Inside Out," Monsters, Inc.," and "Finding Nemo," before seguing into "Good Dinosaur."

20 years ago ... Pixar showed us that we always have a friend, no matter how small, or unlikely, or different. Friendships like these can last forever. But they all begin in a single moment."

The bulk of the video is shots from the new movie, which comes out this Thanksgiving, but it reminds us that Disney Pixar has never really let us down when it comes to heart-melting stories. Sniff. You've been a good friend, but why do you always have to make us cry?!

Watch the video.

The 'Star Wars' Series Wants a Female Director, Elizabeth Banks Volunteers

Posted:

'Black Mass' Premiere - 72nd Venice Film FestivalCould Elizabeth Banks be making the leap from directing "Pitch Perfect 2" to directing a flick in the "Star Wars" series? It's nowhere near a done deal, but Banks has made it known that she wants the job.

The actress-turned-director's interest in the potential project came about thanks to some remarks from Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, who revealed in a recent interview with The Guardian that "Star Wars" is hoping to add more female filmmakers to its roster. Kennedy said that the slate of upcoming spinoffs and new trilogy installments are all directed by men -- including Rian Johnson, Colin Trevorrow, Gareth Edwards, and Phil Lord and Chris Miller -- and that she wanted to change that in the future.

"There's nothing we'd like more than to find a female director for Star Wars," Kennedy told The Guardian.

We completely agree with Kennedy, and apparently, lots of others did, too. The story trended on social media, and plenty of people threw out suggestions for their dream directors. One tweeter mentioned Banks as possible candidate, and the actress agreed with that suggestion. So how likely is it that Banks gets the job? It's impossible to say at this point, since there are already lots of "Star Wars" movies planned out (and their directing jobs already taken), and a female-led flick wouldn't start production for some time. But Banks did make a ton of money for Universal thanks to the success of "Pitch Perfect 2," and another director who raked in cash for that studio, "Jurassic World" helmer Trevorrow, has already headed over to the dark side Disney.

Maybe it's not so far-fetched after all. (Johnson and Miller also chimed in with their support on Twitter.) We recommend Banks use the Force to sway Disney's opinion.

Hulk Confirmed to Smash Things Up in 'Thor: Ragnarok'

Posted:

UPDATED: THR confirms that Mark Ruffalo is in final negotiations to reprise the role of Hulk/Bruce Banner in 'Thor: Ragnarok.' THR also confirms that Tom Hiddelson and Jaimie Alexander are also negotiating their returns as Loki and Lady Sif, respectively.

(Original story below.)

Thor might soon be getting a visit from one of the Science Bros.

Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), aka The Hulk, is rumored to have a role in Marvel's "Thor: Ragnarok," according to Bleeding Cool.

The site's inside sources claim that Hulk will join forces with Thor in his third film, which finds the God of Thunder battling the Norse equivalent of the Apocalypse. (Something "Age of Ultron" hinted at when Scarlet Witch cast a spell on Thor.)

Bleeding Cool has also heard that some of the sequel's action will take place on a "distant planet," one that is neither Asgard or Earth. This taken-with-grain-of-salt-sized rumor hints that, maybe, "Raganrok" will incorporate elements from the long-rumored "Planet Hulk" storyline -- which finds Hulk going all gladiator on an alien world.

The site's sources also confirmed that, should the Hulk rumor pan out, Tom Hiddleston and Jaimie Alexander will also appear in the film, reprising their respective roles of villain "puny god" Loki and Lady Sif.

We'll find out if Hulk will go smash when "Thor: Ragnarok" hits theaters July 28, 2017.

John Stamos Faces 6 Months in Jail Following DUI Charge

Posted:

67th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards - ArrivalsAfter an arrest for DUI this summer, John Stamos still isn't out of the woods yet: The actor has been formally charged by the Los Angeles County District Attorney, and could face six months in jail.

The charges were handed down on Thursday, and Stamos was slapped with a misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of a drug. That drug has never been specified, though reports of the incident, which occurred on June 12, stated that Stamos was "allegedly behaving strangely and driving erratically."

Stamos was arrested and hospitalized that night. Shortly thereafter, he checked himself into rehab for substance abuse, and spent 30 days at a treatment facility.

The actor has been in high demand lately, starring in the new Fox sitcom "Grandfathered" and producing and appearing on the upcoming "Full House" revival series, "Fuller House." According to Variety, regardless of the outcome of Stamos's legal situation, his work on "Grandfathered" will not be affected. The status of his work on "Fuller House" is a bit murkier, though Stamos is only set to recur -- not star -- on that series.

Stamos was set to be arraigned in court on Friday.

Ryan Seacrest Is Turning #SquadGoals into a TV Show

Posted:

2015 iHeartRadio Music Awards On NBC - ShowIn a world where emoji can inspire a movie, why can't a hashtag inspire a TV series?

Well, the latter is now coming true, thanks to Ryan Seacrest, who's producing a new sitcom for CBS inspired by Taylor Swift's favorite trending topic, #SquadGoals. The series, which is dropping the hashtag and just going by "Squad Goals," is described by Variety as "an ensemble comedy about a group of late 20-something friends who met in college and realize it's time to finally grow up."

The show was scripted by Lindsey Rosin and Aaron Karo, and is "loosely inspired by the writers' own observations," according to the trade. Variety also notes that the series "came to fruition when the pair realized they, among many other young adults, were at a pivotal life moment when their friends were at a crossroads, either balancing marriage and mortgages - or margaritas."

Rosin made waves in Hollywood earlier this year thanks to her "Cruel Intentions" parody musical, which earned the attention and admiration of the film's stars. If she brings the same bite to "Squad Goals," she may win over many more fans soon.

We'll see if CBS picks this one up. #StayTuned.

Here is our ranking of the most memorable "Friends" love interests, from worst to best. Note: This doesn't include any of the main six friends, because they would just obviously be the top five.

The One Character 'The Walking Dead' (Probably) Won't Kill

Posted:

Melissa McBride as Carol Peletier and Norman Reedus as Daryl Dixon - The Walking Dead _ Season 5, Gallery - Photo Credit: Frank Ockenfels 3/AMCIt's been said time and time again about the characters on "The Walking Dead": No one is safe. And while that's still technically true, executive producer Robert Kirkman has admitted that there's one notable exception.

While appearing at a "Walking Dead" panel at New York Comic Con last weekend, Kirkman told the crowd that he purposefully changed Carol's (Melissa McBride) character from the comics, transforming her from meek abuse victim on the page to the badass survivalist who can blow up an entire town without breaking a sweat that we know onscreen. That was a conscious decision, Kirkman explained, and he's hesitant to kill her off (for now, anyway) as a result of that significant change.

"The Carol that's in the comic was my attempt to show just how broken an individual can become from the zombie apocalypse," Kirkman told the NYCC crowd. "The Carol in the show, which is a much better character let's be honest, actually is made stronger by all the more horrible things that happen to her in the show. Killing her would definitely not ... we can't do that."

The crowd was mostly in favor of Kirkman's logic (when the producer asked if anyone wanted Carol to die, most of the assembled shouted "No!," though a few people did answer "Yes"), and we are, too. After all, Carol really came into her own as the show progressed; she started out fairly forgettable and frankly, annoying (remember the search for Sophia? Oof), but eventually became one of the MVPs of the series. And her recent reprisal of her meek character in an effort to fool the Alexandrians is nothing short of genius.

As for all those other sad souls the show has lost over the years -- and no doubt will continue to lose in the future -- Kirkman said he did have some remorse over those decisions.

"If I didn't have any regrets, if I didn't still wish that those characters were around, then I feel like I wouldn't have done my job," he said.

Jennifer Grey Will Never Re-Enact the 'Dirty Dancing' Lift: 'I'm Too F--king Old'

Posted:

Nearly 30 years after "Dirty Dancing" hit theaters, its star, Jennifer Grey, says she still gets asked to do the famous lift she performed with Patrick Swayze. Unfortunately for fans, that's never gonna happen.

In an interview with The Guardian, Grey discussed her most iconic role, and while she acknowledged the cultural significance of the flick -- "[W]e're so lucky to have worked on material with brilliant people and created characters with lasting value," she told the paper -- she said that she doesn't dwell in the past. When asked whether she's done the lift since, the actress was blunt in her response.

"God, no!" Grey replied. "I only did it on the day I shot it. Never rehearsed it, never done it since. I don't know how all these people who re-enact it have the guts to throw themselves into the arms of anyone other than Patrick Swayze. It's insane!"

The actress also revealed that when she appeared on season 11 of "Dancing With the Stars" (which she won back in 2010), producers pleaded with her "every day" to incorporate the move into one of her routines, but she refused.

"It's a non-starter," Grey said of such inquiries. "It happened, enjoy it, watch it over and over again but never ask me to do it again because I'm too f--king old.

"I have a family and I want to live longer," she added with a laugh.

We guess it's still true that nobody puts Baby in a corner -- that corner now just happens to include "Dirty Dancing"-related requests.

Best of Late Night TV: James Corden's Pillow Fight with Matt Bomer and Cindy Crawford

Posted:

If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.

Jennifer Aniston's new husband, Justin Theroux, visited "Jimmy Kimmel Live," and admitted that he collects human teeth. As in, his dentist used to slip him bags of teeth every time he went in for a cleaning. Yikes. No wonder Jennifer Aniston fell in love with him!

Over on "Late Night," Dominic West swung by and spoke about an extremely important piece of information: he was in "Spice World." Undoubtedly, the best moment of his life, so relive the glory here.

Any Pentatonix fans out there? Because the band sang the opening to "The Tonight Show," and it was actually pretty cool. And not just for a cappella nerds out there.

More importantly (sorry, Pentatonix), Tom Hanks and Jimmy Fallon performed Kid Theater. Yep, it's that time of the Late Night year again!

Don't worry, we saved the best for last. James Cordon had not one, but two, freakishly beautiful people on "The Late Late Show," and couldn't get through his interview without fantasizing about them. Frankly, we'd do the same if confronted with Cindy Crawford and Matt Bomer. Too much beauty to handle.

Recap of 'The Blacklist' Season 3 Episode 3: Liz Shoots a Cop!

Posted:

Last week on "The Blacklist," Tom Keen showed up and wanted to be BFFs with Agent Ressler, and frankly we're still suffering from the emotional upheaval of seeing his face on screen. Tom was last seen kinda-sorta-maybe sailing the high seas (or something), but it looks like he's back in D.C. and determined to help a homie out. And by "homie," we mean his wife, wanted terrorist Elizabeth Keen.

So, what did Tom get up to this week? Keep reading to find out, but all that really matters right now is that Liz and Reddington escaped to the Midwest.

Tom Eats Chinese Food, Remains Flawless and Perfect (Also, Elizabeth and Red Flee to Iowa)

First of all, Tom is super into hoodies. They're his safe place, OK? Anyway, after having an intense hoodied bro-off with Ressler, Tom tries to convince him to join forces and prove Liz's innocence. Sadly, he gets completely rejected. Tom responds to being cast aside like anyone would do: he binge-eats a bunch of Chinese food until Agent Cooper finally shows up and asks him to take down Russian assassin Karakurt in the hopes of helping Keen. Score!

So, what are Elizabeth and Red up to? Last week, they were busy sailing to Spain -- but apparently Iowa is way cooler, so they head over to the Corn State. Why? To get in with an band of "farmer bandits" (just go with it) and steal files that said bandits stole from an agricultural company. Oh, and the agricultural company in question works for the cabal. It's basically a complicated game of leverage and corn, just go with it.

Liz Shoots a Cop, Ressler Manages To Do Something Right

The bad news is that one of the farmer bandits is totally insane and wants to create a corn-killing virus - which throws a slight wrench in Liz and Red's master plan. Plus, when they're about to figure everything out, Ressler pops in again, forcing Liz to make a hasty escape and hide out at a coffee shop. No bigs, except a cop is lurking in the coffee shop and she up and shoots him. All in all, it's not a great day, and you know who we blame? That's right, his name rhymes with "Chessler."

To be fair to good ol' Ress, he does stop the corn-killing virus from spreading by beating up the crazed farmer trying to unleash it, so at least he has that going for him.

Dembe Makes a Friend, Red Makes a Threat

In the event that you care about the agriculture subplot in this week's episode, the farming corporation's evil plan is to take down all the crops in the world so they could then rush in and save the day. Obviously, Red figures this out and tells the company's head honcho to give a message to the cabal: don't mess with the best 'cause the best don't mess.

Oh, and if you're worried about Dembe, he's still half dead in a cell and has now been joined by none other than Red's associate Mr. Vargas (Paul Reubens). Noooo, not PeeWee!

And now, some burning questions....

1. What are Tom and Cooper up to? Clearly Coop wants Tom to get close to Karakurt, but to what end?
2. What is Ressler's problem? We know he does things by the book, but there's no way he really thinks Liz is a terrorist. Why isn't he being more supportive?
3. What is the cabal's end game? They're still slightly too "evil." Will we learn more about them?
4. Seriously, is Dembe going to make it out alive, because things do not look good.
