The CW Cancels 'America's Next Top Model'

Posted:

America's Next Top ModelThe catwalk is closed: "America's Next Top Model" has been canceled by The CW after 22 seasons.

The show's current cycle will be its last, and the Dec. 4 season ender will be the final bow for executive producer/host Tyra Banks and her crew of judges, stylists, and makeup artists.

"'America's Next Top Model' was a successful franchise for two networks, first at UPN and then The CW, and it became not just a ratings hit, but a global pop culture phenomenon," said CW President Mark Pedowitz in a statement. "I want to thank Tyra and Ken [Mok, executive producer] for all their years of success in establishing a show that was not just popular in the U.S., but all across the world."

"ANTM" debuted on UPN in 2003 and was the first series to air on The CW on Sept. 20, 2006. From 2007 to 2010, it was the fledgling network's highest rated show.

Over the years, the show has seen several judges come and go (including Janice Dickinson, J. Alexander, and Janice Dickinson). And of course, each cycle has produced a top model, like Adrianne Curry and Eva Pigford.

The CW is mulling a retrospective special about "ANTM," possibly to air in 2016.

Gwyneth Paltrow, Ryan Murphy Teaming Up for Musical TV Show

Posted:

Michael Kors- Golden Heart Gala - Inside"Glee" is gone, but not forgotten. The show's creator, Ryan Murphy, is looking to make another musical TV series with "Glee" guest star Gwyneth Paltrow.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project is titled "One Hit Wonders," and it originally started out as a movie with Paltrow, Reese Witherspoon, and Cameron Diaz starring as has-been singers who each had a hit single in the '90s and are trying to form a supergroup to stay relevant.

The rights were bought by Sony, but reverted back to Murphy after the exit of studio head Amy Pascal. Now, he's looking to bring it to the small screen as - what else? - an anthology series. Murphy has four seasons already planned; Paltrow would only appear in the first season.

The GOOP mogul will play a 40-year-old woman who's "broke, exhausted and the victim of cat-fishing by her roommate." She gets a call from a record label to join a supergroup with two other singers like herself, and the trio ends up taking off and becoming an inspiration to women everywhere. The show will feature original music.

But may we suggest a change to the title, to keep in line with Murphy's other projects? How does "American Singer Story: One Hit Wonders" sound, Ryan?

Jesse Owens Goes for Gold in Stirring 'Race' Trailer

Posted:

Race movieIt's been nearly 80 years since Jesse Owens broke records and won four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. As a black athlete, he also broke barriers and dealt a blow to Adolf Hitler's vision of Aryan supremacy.

Owens and his rise to become of the greatest track and field athletes of all time is the subject of "Race," which debuted its first full-length trailer today. The biopic follows Owens (Stephan James of "Selma") from his early collegiate success to his participation in the Olympics. Along the way, though, Owens faced racial prejudice, as well as pressure from the black community to boycott the Nazi-run event.

Owens's story has always been an uplifting one, and the trailer is appropriately stirring. And like last year's "Selma," it shows how far race relations in America have come - and how not enough has changed.

"Race" also stars Jason Sudeikis and Jeremy Irons, and opens in theaters February 19.

Justin Theroux and Jennifer Aniston's Surprise Wedding Was 'Terrible Plan'

Posted:

HBO's Justin Theroux and Jennifer Aniston got married in a surprise wedding ceremony in early August - a real surprise to many of their guests.

The "Leftovers" actor revealed some inside wedding details to Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show today. The low-key ceremony in their backyard boasted a star-studded celebrity guest list, including DeGeneres and partner Portia de Rossi; Aniston's "Friends" alum Lisa Kudrow; John Krasinski and Emily Blunt; and officiant Jimmy Kimmel. Many of the guests were told that it was a birthday party for Theroux, which turned out to be "a massive miscalculation."

"Because we thought, like, we're gonna to tell some people this and some people that and then people that really have to that have busy schedules and whatever," he said. "So then afterwards, we kind of realized, like, that was a terrible plan, because you're basically telling half your guests, 'You're unemployed and we can't trust you,' which was of course not the case."

Of course, that led to very different types of attire among the guests. "There were people there who were just in jeans," he noted. "We also have friends who, when we've done barbecues and stuff, show up, like, dressed to the nines, like, 'This is the thing, right?' And we're like, 'No, this is actually just a barbecue.'"

While the surprise nature of the wedding might've led to some awkwardness, Theroux is just happy to be hitched and to finally be able to call Aniston his wife.

" 'Fiancée,' after a while, sounds cute at first," he said, "Then, you get to say, 'My wife.'"

Tracy Morgan Is Back (to Get Everyone Pregnant) in Hilarious New SNL Promos

Posted:

He's back! Tracy Morgan is hosting "Saturday Night Live" this weekend (October 17), and in a series of new promos with Bobby Moynihan, Tracy shows his memory and comedic timing are sharper than ever.

Tracy Morgan: "Hi, I'm Tracy Morgan and I'm hosting Saturday Night Live's season finale this week with musical guest Demi Lovato."

Bobby Moynihan: "Oh, no, Tracy, this is not the season finale."

Tracy: "Oh it will be after I'm done with it."

He also pretends he doesn't remember working there, then laughs and says he's just messing with Bobby:

Tracy: "I remember everything. Yeah, I remember you owe me $72."

Bobby: "Are you sure?

Tracy: "It might've been $78."

Each take is gold. It is good to see him doing so well after that car accident, which took the life of his close friend. We should all keep clapping as much as Bobby, since this easily could've had a much darker ending. Instead, Tracy is going to get everyone in that building pregnant! That's the plan anyway. Watch and love:

Bachelor Chris Soules Now Has 'Non-Existent' Dating Life, Offers Ben Higgins Advice

Posted:

One year ago, Chris Soules was still sorting through ladies as he taped "The Bachelor" Season 19. He chose Whitney Bischoff and then they consciously uncoupled quickly after he finished the spring 2015 season of "Dancing With the Stars." He just appeared in "Worst Cooks in America: Celebrity Edition" but he took some time to talk to Cupid's Pulse about his current dating life, and his advice for the 2016 Bachelor, Ben Higgins.

"My dating life is relatively non-existent," Chris told Cupid's Pulse, adding, "After dating 30 some-odd women and being engaged and going through that whole process, it's been nice to just kind of get back to normal. Eventually, I'll get back in the dating ring." He added that he and his ex still keep in touch and are "good friends."

He said there are more women interested in dating him now that he's "out there," but his overall approach to dating hasn't changed. "It's still just about finding the right person, someone who appreciates the farming life and also the finer things in life." (Side note: How often is he even farming, with all his TV time in the past year, from "The Bachelorette" to "The Bachelor," "DWTS," and now this cooking show?)
BACHELOR IN PARADISE: AFTER PARADISE - Chris also shared some advice for new Bachelor Ben Higgins, whom he has met:

He deserves it. He's a stand-up guy, and he's what the show is all about, I think. He's truly trying to find somebody, so hopefully, that happens for him. ... The main advice that I gave him was to make sure you take each relationship that you have with those girls very seriously and make sure they feel as comfortable as possible... In order to have a real relationship develop, those girls need to feel like they're the only ones involved in the relationship."

That's pretty good advice, although maybe Chris should really tell Ben everything that went wrong with Whitney so Ben knows what not to do. (Like, maybe stay away from DWTS and just focus on your fiancée?) Ben is currently shooting his season and our fingers are crossed for a happy ending ... that stays happy even after a few months. We'll watch his journey play out starting in early January 2016 on ABC.

The 'Harry Potter' Girls, Ranked by Current Hotness

We're so thankful for all the "Harry Potter" movies. Not only because they provide all the nostalgia we could ever get, but because we get to marvel at how good looking all the girls (and the guys) got post-Hogwarts.

The question on everyone's mind: who got the hottest? To see who we would totally take to the Yule Ball, we used a little magic, a little science, and these new gadgets called eyes to decide. Here, then, is our definitive list of "Harry Potter" girls, ranked by current hotness.

Directors Dish: Actor Tried to Punch Joe Wright, David Fincher Once Did 107 Takes

Posted:

NY Premiere of This one is for the real cinephiles. Empire asked Bond director Sam Mendes to guest edit the "Spectre" issue and he launched a massive Q&A with fellow A-ist directors, talking to Steven Spielberg, David Fincher, Ang Lee, Edgar Wright, Alfonso Cuaron, Joe Wright, Paul Greengrass, Joss Whedon, Rob Marshall, Sofia Coppola, Susanne Bier, George Clooney, Alexander Payne, Roger Michell, and Christopher Nolan. He got those famous names to candidly (and often hilariously) answer questions including...

  • "Have you ever walked off a set in a temper?"
  • "What is the most common phrase you use on set?"
  • "Music or no music on set?"
  • "What's the most takes you've ever done?"
  • "How many cups of coffee a day?"
  • "What's your best-ever day on set?"

Here are the "most takes" responses:

Spielberg: I did 50 takes on Robert Shaw assembling the Greener Gun on Jaws. The shark wasn't working, so I just kept shooting to make the production report look like we were accomplishing something and to keep cast and crew from going crazy from boredom. It was a strategic indulgence.

Soderbergh: 48.

Fincher: 107.

Clooney: 18.

Nolan: I never pay attention to the number of takes.

Edgar Wright: I don't think I have ever gone Kubrick crazy. So maybe 20 or so... But it's usually six or seven takes.

Payne: Probably around 26. I'm normally a four-to- seven kind of guy, but every so often, when the actors, the operator, the dolly grip and the assistant cameramen must all work in sync, it might take a while to get right.

Marshall: I try not to do more than seven or eight. It can become counterproductive.

Cuarón: The long takes process doesn't allow for that many takes. In the past I have shot over 50 takes of different shots. Sometimes you end up using take 64, sometimes take four.

Michell: Like current Australian batsmen... Very rarely double figures.

Lee: For acting, 13. For action, 36.

Bier: Twenty-five, I think. Which, if you're trying to get the best performance, is way, way too much.

Joe Wright: Thirty-seven maybe, can't really remember. I'm usually in the range of 12 to 16 unless it's a very technically challenging shot.

Coppola: I can't remember, nothing too crazy, because we never have that much time in the schedule.

Whedon: On an elaborate shot, 30. On a bit of dialogue, I've seldom gone into double digits.

Greengrass: I don't count over ten.

The hard copy issue had more questions, and Collider shared the responses for "What's your worst-ever day on set?"

Joe Wright: The day an actor tried to punch me. I'll say no more.

Whedon: Buffy presentation. My first gig. Whole thing was a nightmare. At one point there was pure chaos and a total lack of confidence from all involved. I stood outside the set, wanting to slink off home and realising that if I did, if I didn't walk in there and somehow take control, I was going to be an increasingly miserable script doctor forever. So I walked in. Worst day ended up not so bad.

Edgar Wright: Too many. I can remember a low point on every shoot. Shaun, it was in the pub finale; we were up against it and had to cut action. Hot Fuzz, we were rained off, lost the light or night shoots went abysmally slow. Scott Pilgrim, I think there was a complicated, disastrous day of effect cues that sent me into a deep funk, and then on World's End I remember a day where nothing went right where we ditched an entire sequence. Cue my transformation into The Sulk.

Payne: I abhor when the actors don't know their dialogue cold. When I have to spoon-feed dialogue to a lazy actor, I think of all the great Russian novels I could be reading instead of wasting my time. It makes me want to turn exclusively to documentaries - no hair and make-up, no second takes, and everyone knows his or her dialogue.

Read more at Empire. Who tried to punch Joe Wright, director of the new "Pan," "Atonement," "Pride & Prejudice," and "Hanna"? And do you think Fincher was just joking with the 107 or was that the exact highest number? The "Fight Club," "Gone Girl," "Seven," "Benjamin Button," "Social Network" and "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" director is known for being a perfectionist, so it wouldn't be a shock if the real number were even higher.

Emma Watson, Bradley Cooper React to Jennifer Lawrence's Pay Gap Essay

Posted:

Spain Emma WatsonJennifer Lawrence volunteered as tribute to take on gender pay inequality, and she's getting plenty of support from her friends in Hollywood -- including one of the guys in the movie she was writing about. Jen's Lenny essay, "Why Do I Make Less Than My Male Co Stars?" seemed to single out her film "American Hustle" without ever mentioning it by name, since she wrote about settling for less than Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, and Jeremy Renner.

Bradley and Jennifer have made multiple films together, and he was one of several stars to weigh in on JLaw's essay after it was posted. While promoting "Burnt" with Sienna Miller, Bradley told E! News he hadn't yet had a chance to read Jennifer's entire essay, but he addressed the basic premise.
NY Special Screening Of "One thing I could say is that's interesting because if you think that you only deserve a certain amount and that's not correct, it's about changing that mindset and sticking up for yourself the way that Sienna did," Bradley said. "So that's a great thing." What Sienna did, she explained, was walk away from a play that she wanted to do because she was offered "less than half of what the other man was offered and it was just the two of us." Ouch! Good for her.

Other actresses took to Twitter to share their support for Jennifer Lawrence's essay, including the great Emma Watson, who retweeted the essay link and someone else's response before sharing her own reaction: And here are similar love-fests from Jessica Chastain and Elizabeth Banks: Who doesn't love Jennifer Lawrence? (If you're raising your hand, why? Just curious.) She is using her power for good, calling attention to some of the reasons behind the pay disparity and what she and others can do to narrow the gap.

Holiday TV: 'Bones' Gets First Thanksgiving Episode, 'Castle' Gets Bad News

Posted:

'Tis the season to be asking about 2015 holiday episodes. That's apparently a big topic for fans, since TVLine just answered some questions about upcoming events on ABC's "Castle" and Fox's "Bones."

Since "Bones" has the better news, let's let them go first. When TVLine was asked if "Bones" would have a Christmas episode, this was the response:

...Dunno about a Christmas episode. What I donno is, for the first time in the show's 11-year history, we will be getting a Thanksgiving episode. "We, shockingly, have never done a Thanksgiving episode," co-showrunner Michael Peterson marvels to TVLine. "That's the one we're prepping right now. There will be surprise guest stars. There'll be returning family members."

Sounds great! Here's the less good news for "Castle." A fan asked if there would be a holiday episode and TVLine mentioned the show's schedule change -- adding a long winter break -- that puts the kibosh on that:

As you may have surmised upon reading about Castle (and Nashville) joining the ranks of split-season ABC shows, there will be no holly jolly follies this year. "Unfortunately," co-showrunner Alexi Hawley told us, "because of the way ABC is platforming us - we do eight episodes and end [Nov. 23], and we're not on again until the beginning of February - we won't be on the air for the holidays."

Here's more not happening news re: "Castle." One viewer just asked for some general spoilers and got some bad news for Beckett fans:

I'm hearing that a late fall episode - most likely the Nov. 9 installment - will be very Beckett-lite. As in she will, at best, maybe-possibly be in one scene. ABC declined to comment, but my guess is Stana Katic had an "out" in her contract so she could be here.

That "here" link takes you to a YouTube video showing Stana Katic at Milan Fashion Week in late September. That was probably a good time, but we'll miss seeing her on screen. It's sad to hear one episode will be nearly Beckett-free and there will be a huge midseason gap that prevents having a fun holiday show.

It's the curse of the midseason break! The last thing we need is more shows to take that winter vacation -- what are we supposed to do in December, stop watching TV completely? Blasphemy!

11 Awesome Trailers That Are Better Than the Movie

Posted:

Movie trailers are what get us to fork over our box office dollars, but sometimes we don't always get our money's worth.

In fact, the movie we're sold on is often underwhelming or disappointing -- failing to live up to the quality of the ad that hooked us in. (We're looking at you, "Phantom Menace.") As theaters fill with previews for this Fall's coming attractions, here are 11 previews that proved to be better than the movie.

'Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace' (1999)
Back when trailers hit the internet in thumbnail vid sizes, if you wanted to really the prequel's first teaser, you had to buy a ticket to see (cringe) "Meet Joe Black." Today, we'd take a blank-faced Brad Pitt eating peanut butter over Jar-Jar any day.

'X3' (2006)
Wolverine's "gotta rally the troops" speech at trailer's end, in concert with the action-packed trailer music and visuals, convinced us that Brett Ratner taking over for Bryan Singer may not have been such a bad thing. We were so, so wrong.

'Spider-Man 3' (2007)
Another threequel, another trailer that tricked us into seeing a movie with emo Peter Parker and Harry's pervy line delivery about pie. The trailer's final line -- "This could be the end of Spider-Man" -- proved unfortunately prophetic.

'Die Another Day' (2002)
Oh c'mon! Ice guns, frozen tundras revealed to be curvy ladies -- what's not to love?! This teaser is way cooler than anything in Pierce Brosnan's final Bond film.

'Avengers: Age of Ultron' (2015)
We're confident you watched this trailer more than the movie itself. "Ultron" isn't terrible, it's just, well, okay. And that's worse. But that creepy cover of "I Got No Strings" is the best.

'Quantum of Solace' (2008)
After "Casino Royale," we should have received -- as this trailer indicates -- "The Dark Knight" of Bond movies. Unfortunately, we had to wait another movie for that.

'Prometheus' (2012)
The first ad for the "Alien" prequel, borrowing from the 1979 film's trailer in chilling ways, is more of a true "Alien" prequel than the final film. They should have called it "Noble Misfire."

'Alien 3' (1992)
This first teaser for yet another threequel (seeing a pattern?) is very misleading -- especially with its promise of Earth's first xenomorph encounter.

'Where the Wild Things Are' (2009)
That Arcade Fire song, plus Spike Jonze's faithful (visual) adaptation of the much-beloved children's book, equals all the feels. The movie? Not so much.

'Sucker Punch' (2011)
Contrary to what the trailer makes you think, NO ONE wants to see flying girls punch giant, mini-gun wielding samurai.

'The Dark Knight Rises' (2012)
I'm just gonna leave this right here...

Best of Late Night TV: Taraji P. Henson's Cute 'Blast From the Past,' Four-Way Air Hockey, Zelda Symphony

Posted:

If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.

Taraji P. Henson plays Cookie on "Empire" but she told Jimmy Kimmel she's all set for cookies, thanks, so fans can please stop sending them to her. She also played a little game called "Blast from the Past," where six people's faces flashed on a screen and she had to guess which one was part of her past. It's kind of adorable what happened with her first choice. (Call him, girl!) And the ultimate reveal is sweet. Spoiler alert: She was part of her high school's homecoming court, and you can see the photos!

Over on "The Tonight Show," it was hockey season, with Michael Strahan, Eve Hewson, Tony Gonzalez and Jimmy Fallon playing a fun game of four-way air hockey:
The Democratic Debate was just last night and "Jimmy Kimmel Live" was ready with "CNN's Honest Promo," where they spoofed the lessened interest in the non-Trump event. "Which nondescript white guy will Hillary Clinton beat? Tune in to find out!"

Stephen Colbert went full nerd to promote "The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes" for the Nintendo 3DS System, which is out October 23. Here's a performance by The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses: Sarah Silverman told Stephen Colbert she accidentally got Michael Sheen in the news for his penis when she tweeted a joke about her boyfriend naming his own penis and it showed up as a legit thing in Us Weekly.
That was hilarious, but so are the bad kids jokes that Sarah and Stephen read aloud, in honor of the "Bad Kids Jokes" tumblr. James Corden gave "The Newsroom" the "Dumb & Dumber" treatment, courtesy of guest Jeff Daniels. Anchor Will McAvoy gets upset during his interview with Corden when new PA Harry Dunne can't seem to do anything right. Well done, Daniels!
And this one is for the "Bring It On" fans -- Kirsten Dunst was also a "Late Late Show" guest and she busted out a cheer:
