Rumors have been swirling for months now that Spider-Man, whose movie life belongs to Sony, will be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is owned by Disney. Well, rumor no more. It is happening. Marvel broke the news themselves. Here are the most important highlights: 1. Spider-Man will first appear in a Disney movie within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. 2. The next standalone Spider-Man movie will be released by Sony on July 28, 2017. And though Sony is releasing it, it will be co-produced by Marvel Studios and its mastermind, Kevin Feige, and Sony's former head Amy Pascal. 3. The door is open to have characters from the MCU (Iron Man, Thor, and so on) appear in the new Spider-Man movies at Sony. 4. Here's the most important quote, from Kevin Feige...

DVD Obscura: The New Indie and International Movies You Need to Watch

Posted: 09 Feb 2015 11:00 PM PST

New Indie: Whether or not you think Selma got a raw deal from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences this year, one upside to the exposure that director Ava DuVernay has received from the film is the long-awaited DVD release for her previous feature, Middle of Nowhere (Lionsgate Home Entertainment). As much of an achievement as Selma is, it’s even more impressive when you consider the leap in scale that DuVernay took from this very intimate indie to such a sweeping historical epic. This Independent Spirit and Sundance Film Festival award-winner follows Ruby (Emayatzy Corinealdi) as she struggles to maintain her life while her husband Derek (Omari Hardwick) serves out a prison sentence. Ruby’s world gets more complicated when she finds herself falling in love...

Here are a bunch of little bites to satisfy your hunger for movie culture:   While we wait to see how Chris Pratt really trained velociraptors in Jurassic World, here's a little animated parody of the concept (via Geek Tyrant):   Graphic designer Matt Needle has made a series of prints for Best Picture nominees, including the one for Whiplash below. Visit his site for more, all of which are available to buy.   Speaking of Whiplash, here's an ad for Weird Al Yankovic's world tour that parodies the acclaimed movie and the Oscar-nominated performance of J.K. Simmons:   If you talk during a movie at the Alamo Drafthouse, Mark Hamill will unleash a secret service of insane clowns brandishing lightsabers (via Topless...

Mel Brooks Toys With Mankind By Teasing 'Spaceballs 2'

Posted: 09 Feb 2015 08:30 PM PST

It's been 20 years since Mel Brooks made a new movie. Since 1995's Dracula: Dead and Loving It, the funnyman has done some acting here and there, but most of his work has been either on the stage or on the page. That all may soon change, however, thanks to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Brooks recently revealed on Adam Corolla's podcast [transcribed by Bloody-Disgusting] that all this buzz surrounding the launch of a new Star Wars trilogy has him looking back on Spaceballs and considering if it has a future. I’m thinking now, if I did a movie that came out right after Star Wars comes out — maybe a couple of months later — I’d have a big weekend, you know? No matter what, even if it fell on its ass and didn’t get its money...

Angelina Jolie Might Direct Marvel's First Female-Driven Superhero Movie

Posted: 09 Feb 2015 07:00 PM PST

Big Movie Rumor Alert: Angelina Jolie might be crossing over into the superhero-movie genre, as new rumors are pegging her to direct the upcoming Captain Marvel for Marvel Studios and Disney, due out in 2018. The rumor comes from the February issue of OK! Magazine, who claim that studio folks are so impressed with Jolie's Unbroken that they've offered her a staggering $20 million to direct what will essentially be Marvel Studios' first female-led superhero movie. Money aside, the inclination is that Marvel wants a fully female-driven Captain Marvel, with a female lead and director, which is similar to what DC is doing for their solo Wonder Woman film, to be directed by Michelle MacLaren (Breaking Bad, Game of...

Watch a Scene-by-Scene Comparison of 'Airplane!' and the Very Dramatic Movie That Inspired It

Posted: 09 Feb 2015 03:40 PM PST

This summer marks the 30th anniversary of Airplane!, which is arguably the best spoof comedy of all time. One of the reasons it works so well is that it's not a hodgepodge parody of multiple things -- a whole genre or brand or pop culture in general -- the way a lot of modern spoofs are. It's broad in its gag work but very specific in its aim. The 1980 feature is really just a loose remake of the 1957 drama Zero Hour! And that itself was a remake of a 1956 TV movie titled Flight into Danger (which was later adapted into a book titled Runway Zero 8). In a way, Airplane! creators Jim Abrahams, David Zucker and Jerry Zucker were also lampooning the airline-disaster genre of the 1970s, which mainly centered around the Airport series...

'Straight Outta Compton' Trailer: See How Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and N.W.A. Changed Rap Music Forever

Posted: 09 Feb 2015 02:20 PM PST

If you grew up a fan of rap music or any sort of hip-hop really, then no doubt you've listened to N.W.A. on many occasions. The controversial rap group helped bring gangsta rap to the mainstream and in the process became an influential voice for many communities across the country that felt they had no voice. A movie about their story has been in the works for a few years now, with Universal picking it up and assigning F. Gary Gray to direct Straight Outta Compton, which is fitting since Gray was behind the camera in 1995 for Ice Cube's big breakout acting role in the "hood" comedy Friday. Ice Cube, of course, was one of the founding members of N.W.A, along with Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, MC Ren and DJ Yella. And this first full-length trailer kicks off with the current...

Fifty Shades of Grey: According to director Sam Taylor-Johnson, both sequels to E.L. James' book Fifty Shades of Grey will be adapted for the big screen. After the first book in the trilogy was published to great success, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed were also big sellers, and now advance ticket sales for the first movie adaptation, due out in theaters on Friday, February 13, have apparently ensured that the sequels will be transformed as well. [MTV]   Bleed for This: Rising young star Miles Teller (Whiplash, The Fantastic Four) appears much the worse for wear in the first look at boxing drama Bleed for This.
