'Outlander' Sneak Peek: Everything's Building to a Climax

Posted:

OutlanderSteamy Starz drama "Outlander" left fans panting for more last September, when it went on hiatus halfway through its first season. Call it "'Outlander' interruptus."

The show returns April 4, and to give fans a little treat to nibble on, Starz has released a sneak peek with tantalizing footage from the second half of the season. "Outlander" picks up where it left off, with Claire (Caitriona Balfe) nearly getting raped by Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies) before new husband Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) showed up to save her.

The sneak peek previews the newly-married couple's challenges to come. "You're really going to love seeing what it means for the two of them to stay together, rather than get together," Balfe teases.

There are glimpses of Jamie's sister, Jenny (Laura Donnelly), and her husband, Ian. And we see the return of Geillis Duncan (Lotte Verbeek).

And of course, as executive producer Ronald D. Moore warns, "Jack Randall is not quite finished with our couple. And, it's gonna be dark."

Vanity Fair is acknowledging the takeover in their annual Hollywood issue, which has an accompanying short film featuring a slew of British actors. Tasha Smith Says 'You're Going to Get Some Major Surprises' on 'Empire' (EXCLUSIVE)

Posted:

"Empire" is one of the hottest things on TV right now, and Tasha Smith is more than happy to be a part of the phenomenon.

Throughout her successful career, Smith has appeared in films like "Couples Retreat" and starred in shows like "Boston Common," and now you can catch her as Cookie's (Taraji P. Henson) sister Carol Hardaway on the hit Fox series.

The actress -- who will also return to her lead role on "For Better or Worse" this March -- dished to Moviefone about what it's like to work on such a huge TV sensation, what's in store for Cookie and company, and how her character Carol will spice things up for the empire. According to her, we're in for some surprising, "down and dirty" drama.

Moviefone: First of all, how does it feel to be involved in such a massive success like "Empire?" We haven't seen anything like this in a while happen in terms of ratings.

Tasha Smith: It's amazing. It's feels like when LeBron James joined all those guys and Dwyane Wade on the Miami Heat. I feel like I'm on a winning team and I'm just happy that I get to play in the game once in a while.

What do you think it is about this show that has so many people hooked?

It reminds me -- and maybe I'll hate to use this comparison -- but remember when back in the day when "Martin" was what everyone fell in love with? Like everyone was connected, all the characters were crazy. To me, this is like "Martin." We needed this. We needed a cast that people liked, loved, hated. We needed the drama that was going to make people tune in. We needed phenomenal actors that were going to deliver week after week. It's like all of the components are just perfect. It's like a perfectly made machine.

You're working with Lee Daniels on this and John Singleton directed the upcoming episode. What's it like to work with these two talents?

It was like heaven. These guys are brilliant. It's an actors dream. Lee Daniels is so passionate about his art. He is an artist who will put himself on the chopping block to bring truth, reality, and honesty into a scene. It is a dream. Both of them were two people I dreamed of working with and I couldn't be more grateful for the opportunity.

What will we see in John Singleton's episode? (Airing Wednesday, February 4th.)

Drama, drama, and more drama. And then I'll say this: If Cookie's got a problem, she knows who to call.

Tell us a little about Cookie's sister Carol, who we caught a glimpse of at Bunkie's funeral. How will she come into this story a little bit more?

I'm still learning. The writers don't really tell us everything and we get surprised when we get the script. But I feel like Carol knows where the bodies are buried and if she needs to bury a few more to have Cookie's back, she will. She's a person who gets down and dirty. She's a wonderful person to play.

Will we be seeing more of their past relationship and can we expect her to dig up some Cookie dirt?

I believe you're gonna start seeing more of that in the second season. We have so many characters and we have to establish their story lines. You'll continue to see glimpses of Carol, but I feel like the second season might get into that a little more.

Is Carol similar to Cookie? How do they differ as sisters?

I think she's worse than Cookie.

She taught Cookie a few things, maybe?

I think she taught Cookie a few things and I think she's a little more dirty. Honestly, I think she's the one to be afraid of. You see Cookie coming, but you don't see Carol coming.

She's got more of a sneak attack then.

She's a sneak attack for real.

Anything else that might surprise us as the season progresses?

I gotta tell you, you're going to get a lot of surprises. You are going to get some major surprises. I just can't give it all away. You've got to stay tuned.

What about Cookie and Lucious? Will they reunite romantically or will we see her in another relationship?

Anything could happen.

How did you get ready for this role? Did you research any music scandals or tragedies and dig into that world a bit?

I am very familiar with the hip hop world. And I'm from Camden, New Jersey and they're from Philly. My character is from Philadelphia, so I got a chance to really talk to a bunch of people who live in Philadelphia and understand that jail and drug-dealing life. I really got some information on how I could keep my character grounded, along with the guidance of the writers and Lee Daniels.

You've worked with so many great people in the past, but what's it like on this set with this particular cast?

I got to tell you, it's fun and it's all about spontaneity. Terrence Howard is one of the most talented actors I've ever got the chance to work with. He's always so invested in every move and every moment. And Taraji is just a tour de force. She's got an electric energy, and both of them are just so beautiful! They're so wonderful to work with. And Jessie Smollett, who plays Jamal, is also amazing. They're all wonderful.

What would be your ultimate dream for your character Carol, if you had your way in the writer's room?

I want Carol to get in that empire and get that money. Carol has gotta get in there, she's suffered long enough!

"Empire" airs Wednesday at 9 PM on Fox.

Who Is Saul Goodman?: 5 Things to Know Before 'Better Call Saul' Premieres

Posted:

The "Breaking Bad" spinoff "Better Call Saul" has a two-night premiere this week, starting Sunday, February 8 right after the midseason premiere of "The Walking Dead" Season 5. It may sneak up on some viewers who were still expecting to see "Talking Dead" at that 10 p.m. ET time, and other folks may tune in just because AMC's teasers have been funny and intriguing -- even if they aren't familiar with "Breaking Bad," the lead character of Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) or anything else in this world. No worries. The Powers That Be have emphasized that you don't need to be a "Breaking Bad" fan to appreciate this show, and even hardcore BB fans will be surprised by the story. It's not rocket science (or a tricky meth recipe) to catch up on the basics, and newbies should be ready to go once they know these five things.

1. The show is a prequel set six years before "Breaking Bad"
Saul first appears as the sketchy but hilarious lawyer of Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) and Walter White (Bryan Cranston) in Season 2, Episode 8 of "Breaking Bad." His first big episode was actually titled "Better Call Saul." This spinoff show is set in 2002, which is six years before that point, so we see how he became that guy. However, we're also meant to see some flashes from the "present" time, after the explosive BB finale sent Saul fleeing from New Mexico to Nebraska for the protection of a new life. So if you haven't seen BB, but would still like to someday, just know that some scenes might function as future spoilers (but not in a way that should dissuade you from watching the entire amazing series).

2. Saul isn't even Saul's real name
Back in 2002, Saul wasn't even Saul. He was just a struggling small-time lawyer still going by his real name, Jimmy McGill. He later goes by Saul Goodman because it sounds Jewish and it's a play on "s'all good, man" to attract clients. As he explained to Walter White, "The Jew thing I just do for the homeboys. They all want a pipe-hitting member of the tribe, so to speak..." Yeah, he's that kind of guy. Sleaze-fest all the way. But he's good at what he does.

3. He's a criminal lawyer
Jesse Pinkman, Walter White's former chemistry student and meth-making partner in "Breaking Bad," was the one who initially recommended that they go to Saul (better call Saul!) to be their lawyer, because, as Jesse put it, when the going gets tough, you don't need a criminal lawyer, you need a CRIMINAL lawyer. Savvy? Saul is knee-deep in the criminal underworld and works to connect various players in that realm.

4. He's had multiple wives
Saul is a character on every front, and he revealed that he's had many wives -- he caught one in flagrante delicto with his own stepfather -- and he also had a relationship with his secretary. Hopefully we'll see some of his personal life on "Saul," since it seems like too much of a delicious mess to ignore.

5. Mike will be a series regular
Fans aren't expecting "Better Call Saul" to feature too many "Breaking Bad" faces on a regular bases, but one you'll get to know (and probably love) is Michael Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks). On "Breaking Bad," Mike was Saul's private investigator and "fixer." He's a former cop and a total badass. So it's interesting that a "Better Call Saul" sneak peek shows an early interaction between Mike and Jimmy/Saul, from before they started working together, and Mike is ... working as a parking attendant? Why is a guy like Mike working in a parking garage? We'll find out.

There are still a lot of things BB fans and non-fans will discover together, like the relationship between Jimmy/Saul and his older brother Chuck McGill, a new main character played by Michael McKean. Watch this AMC video for more on their dynamic and for more details on the new (and not-so-new) characters of "Better Call Saul":

This 'Magic Mike XXL' Trailer Will Dance Right Into Your Heart (VIDEO)

Posted:

Magic Mike XXLChanning Tatum unveiled the awesomely unsubtle poster for "Magic Mike XXL" yesterday, but apparently that was just a tease for today's big reveal. Yes, the trailer for "Magic Mike XXL" is here, and as the trailer says, you're welcome.

Those of us who remember the '80s will immediately notice the callback to "Flashdance" and its heroine Alex, a welder by day and stripper by night. Except, naturally, Tatum is the one behind that welding helmet and not Jennifer Beals, and he's doing something rather suggestive with his materials. Then he starts dancing all over the place. He's out of control with the dancing! And that's when the action begins. Abs, breakdancing, partying, Ginuwine's "Pony," gyrating, cans of soda exploding, and more abs: It's all here!

It's not clear if the trailer's winking self-awareness will translate to the movie itself, or if the trailer is cut to emphasize the sexy, funny parts. Although "Magic Mike" was humorous and sexy, it was also a little grim. (Anyone else remember that sad little mini pig?) Gregory Jacobs is directing; as with many of Steven Soderbergh's projects, Jacobs was the assistant director on "Magic Mike." The script is co-written by Tatum and Reid Carolin, who penned the original "Magic Mike."

Tatum and pals will dance back into our hearts and loins on July 1, 2015, when "Magic Mike XXL" hits theaters.

Charlie Hunnam Takes Over 'The Lost City of Z'

Posted:

Premiere Screening Of FX's
"Sons of Anarchy" star Charlie Hunnam is headed to the Amazon. The beefy Brit will dust off his pith helmet to play Col. Percival Fawcett in "The Lost City of Z," based on the book by David Grann. Fawcett was a real-life British explorer who disappeared during his search for a lost city in the jungle that he'd dubbed "Z," which he'd hoped would turn out to be the mysterious city of El Dorado.

Hunnam is replacing Benedict Cumberbatch in the role of Fawcett. The "Sherlock" star will be busy with "Doctor Strange" and assorted projects, and although Cumberbatch is pretty magical, he hasn't yet figured out how to clone himself. Yet. In the meantime, he'll have to share the wealth.

Hunnam will be joined by Robert Pattinson and Sienna Miller, who co-star as Fawcett's assistant and wife, respectively. James Gray ("The Immigrant," "Two Lovers") will direct the adaptation. Shooting will begin this summer.

In the meantime, you can catch Charlie Hunnam in this fall in Guillermo del Toro's "Crimson Peak," which looks fantastic. Plus, it's never too late to watch "Sons of Anarchy," which ended in December.

Best of Late Night TV: Ellen Plays 'Password' With Reese, Steve Carell; Mila Kunis Talks Tinder (VIDEO)

Posted:

If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.

Ellen DeGeneres was Jimmy Fallon's guest Tuesday night on "The Tonight Show," but two current Oscar nominees - Reese Witherspoon and Steve Carell - competed opposite Ellen and Jimmy in a game of "Password." They were actually pretty good.Neil Young was also on "The Tonight Show" and here Jimmy does an amazing impression to sing "Old Man" along with the real guy. Two Neil Youngs = doubly amazing!
Mila Kunis was on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" to promote "Jupiter Ascending" and she talked about her new baby. This is her first time out and about without her daughter - she admitted she cried to leave Wyatt behind. She also said she and Ashton Kutcher hold their child very differently. Speaking of Ashton, she talked about how people are always approaching him with new things and he has her check them out. Tinder wasn't really out yet when they started dating but he had her sign up online. You have to watch that video to the end to hear Jimmy's line. Bob Odenkirk was on JKL to promote this Sunday's premiere of "Better Call Saul." They don't want to ruin "Breaking Bad" so they're very happy with how the spinoff turned out. In the second video, they include a clip of Bob watching the show for the first time and realizing he's the star. Debra Messing -- with that forever flawless hair - was on "Late Night with Seth Meyers" talking about how her old "Will & Grace" co-star Eric McCormack is guest-starring on "The Mysteries of Laura" this season. Horatio Sanz was also on Seth's show and he and Fred Armisen re-enacted their cut "Toy Collectors" SNL sketch. Dr. Phil was on "Late Show with David Letterman" and Dave criticized Phil's all-black wardrobe, then shared a new slogan for him. They dissed each other by saying they watch the competition's shows. (Dave watches Ellen, Phil watches Kimmel ... or so they say.) Phil also gave Dave some parenting advice. Robin Tunney of "The Mentalist" was on Letterman's show (sexy outfit!) and she confessed she once wanted to be stranded on an island with him. He was so flattered, as he should've been. Steven Yeun was on "Conan" and he said he can't stand when people nit-pick little things on "The Walking Dead." He was on the Elvis Duran radio show the other day and a woman called in to ask about grass lengths of the lawns on the show. "The basis of the show is that there's dead people that came back to life to eat people to kill them to come back to life. Who cares about the grass?" Conan pushed for spoilers on the rest of Season 5, which starts this Sunday. Steven just said "It's really good. I think it's some of the best episodes we've ever made - and that's not just saying that..." Conan said when he watched the Season 5 premiere, his eyes melted. So Steven added, "This Episode 9 that's coming up, other things of you will melt." Um, great? Steven also emphasized that not all Asians look alike, although a lot of guys out there keep telling him they get mistaken for him. He also goes on Reddit to spread that not-all-Asians-are-the-same message, and there's a good Brad Pitt connection. Also, Steven is the Asian Elijah Wood. Jay and Mark Duplass (who have the new show "Togetherness") were also on "Conan" and they air-drummed with the host
