The Last Horror Blog: Celebrate George Romero's 75th Birthday with These Non-'Living Dead' Films Posted: 05 Feb 2015 11:00 PM PST Horror icon and zombie-film legend George Romero turned 75 yesterday, so there’s no better time to celebrate the rich and varied career of one of America’s most beloved maverick filmmakers than with a retrospective of his work. However, instead of pointing out the obvious films everyone’s likely to watch this week (the Dead movies), I thought it would be more interesting to highlight some of the other films in Romero’s oeuvre. Sure, most of these aren’t quite on the same level as Dawn of the Dead – but lesser Romero still has plenty to offer to the discerning genre fan. Happy birthday, George – here’s to hoping we somehow get another 75 years’ worth of films from you (without you having to come back as a brain-eating... Posted: 05 Feb 2015 10:00 PM PST "The conceit started with Sam, which was that a veteran comes home from war and he's fine, but the country has PTSD." War and PTSD aren't exactly the first things you'd associate with a romantic comedy, but that quote from writer-director Sean Mullin helps reveal why his debut feature film, Amira & Sam, is such a smart and utterly delightful entry in the genre. If you like rom-coms, but think they're more or less all the same these days, then you are definitely going to want to check out Amira & Sam, which is out now in select theaters and available On Demand. It's about a soldier, Sam (Martin Starr), who finds himself trying to readjust to civilian life in New York City with the help of his banker cousin, played by Paul... Today in Movie Culture: British-Actors Invasion, Remote Control 'Millennium Falcon' and More Posted: 05 Feb 2015 08:35 PM PST Here are a bunch of little bites to satisfy your hunger for movie culture: The British are coming! To steal American movie parts, apparently. That's nothing new, but Vanity Fair produced a funny, film-lover's dream regarding the idea, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hiddleston, Eddie Redmayne, Felicity Jones, Dame Judi Dench, Keira Knightley, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Caine and pretty much everyone else referencing famous scenes from Hollywood classics. Part one of three is below. Head to Vanity Fair for the others (via Collider). Twenty-five years ago, Warner Bros. campaigned for Batman to receive a bunch of Oscar nominations, producing full-page ads like the one below for Best Sound and Best Visual Effects... See the Hidden Speakeasy at Pixar Studios Where Steve Jobs Would Meditate Posted: 05 Feb 2015 06:00 PM PST Secret rooms are almost always awesome, especially if they're at your workplace and provide a special location to hide, drink, mingle with VIPs and maybe even meditate. That is the case for Pixar Animation Studios, where there are a number of fully stocked bars on site, including a couple hidden speakeasy types with unconventional entrances. The first one of the speakeasies was created by animator Andrew Gordon (his most notable, award-winning achievement on-screen is the "speaking whale" in Finding Nemo but he seems to have worked on almost every one of the studio's features), who found a little alcove behind his office when they moved to their main Emeryville campus. Only accessible by crawling through an air duct (as seen above in a photo by Deborah... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
First 'Poltergeist'-Remake Trailer Is a Great Reason to Never Give Clown Dolls to Children Posted: 05 Feb 2015 04:30 PM PST Update: As promised below, here's the first trailer for the new Poltergeist: Previously: Just a few weeks ago Sam Rockwell, who plays the dad in the upcoming Poltergeist remake, revealed that the new version was "more of a kids' movie." This was a red flag for a lot of fans who thought it meant the movie wouldn't be scary, so we promptly reminded everyone that it wasn't necessarily a bad idea. But if you're still convinced it means the movie is doomed, maybe these new pictures will settle your nerves a bit. Director Gil Kenan told USA Today that "The film is super scary. And it's scary on its own terms." And while we assume that means this new take on the story of a family living in a house at the epicenter of a gateway... Watch Chris Pratt, Chris Evans and Jimmy Fallon Photobomb Football Fans Posted: 05 Feb 2015 01:30 PM PST While you were at home enjoying the Super Bowl and the movie trailers that came with it -- movie trailers including spots for Avengers: Age of Ultron and Jurassic World -- the stars of those two summer 2015 blockbusters were at the big game. Chris Evans and Chris Pratt actually attended together and even had a wager on the outcome, because the former is a New England Patriots fan while the latter is a Seattle Seahawks fan. The Patriots won, but the stars have settled their bet as a draw, meaning they'll both be visiting children's hospitals in the respective teams' cities in costume as their Marvel-cinematic-universe character. On top of that, Evans and Pratt joined up with Jimmy Fallon to give even more football fans a special day. More... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: 05 Feb 2015 12:00 PM PST Robotech: A new attempt is being made to bring a live-action movie version of the popular 1980s anime series Robotech to the big screen. The story revolved around the crash of a spaceship that allowed humans to make highly advanced robotic technologies, which were then used to battle alien invasions. Multiple filmmakers have tackled the project in the past without success; now writer Michael Gordon (300; G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra) has been hired to draft a new screenplay for Warner Bros. [Deadline] The Woods: Adam Wingard, who most recently helmed last year's action-thriller The Guest, will next make the horror movie The Woods. The tale follows a small group of college students on a fateful and no doubt frightening camping trip. Simon Barrett wrote the...
