Sony Chief Amy Pascal Stepping Down Amid Hacking Scandal Fallout

Posted:

Premiere Of Columbia Pictures'
The hacking attack that crippled Sony and threw its release of "The Interview" into disarray has claimed another victim: Amy Pascal, who will step down from her post as the studio's co-chairman and chair of its motion picture group.

Pascal will officially leave those roles in May, though she is slated to stay on at Sony as a producer. Her replacement is likely to be an existing Sony exec, according to Variety, and top candidates include TriStar Pictures chief Tom Rothman, Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group president Doug Belgrad, and Columbia Pictures production president Michael De Luca.

While Pascal has largely been hailed in her role at Sony -- shepherding hits like "Spider-Man," "The Social Network," and "21 Jump Street" -- the scandal surrounding alleged North Korean hackers' release of detailed Sony documents and emails was ultimately too much for the executive to face. Pascal faced universal backlash after a racially-tinged email exchange with producer Scott Rudin speculating about President Barack Obama's movie taste was unveiled.

Despite that embarrassment, Pascal put a positive spin on her exit.

"I have spent almost my entire professional life at Sony Pictures and I am energized to be starting this new chapter based at the company I call home," Pascal said in a statement. "I have always wanted to be a producer."

Per Variety, Pascal's four-year production deal will be based at Sony, which will provide funding for all her projects.

Damon Wayans Jr. Is Leaving 'New Girl' (Again)

Posted:

Premiere Of Disney's He left the show once before, and now, Damon Wayans Jr. will be saying goodbye to "New Girl" again.

TVLine reports that the actor, who plays Coach on the Fox comedy, will depart the series at the end of its current fourth season. No reason for his exit was explained.

"I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to come back to New Girl in Season 3 to reprise the role of Coach," Wayans told TVLine in a statement. "Working with this incredibly talented and funny cast and crew has been one of the best experiences of my career."

Wayans was originally cast as Coach in the "New Girl" pilot, but bowed out of the series when his ABC show "Happy Endings" was unexpectedly renewed. He was replaced in the ensemble by Lamorne Morris's Winston, though he returned in a guest starring stint in season three, and became a series regular again for season four.

"We love Damon and are so lucky to have had him return for the past season-and-a-half," "New Girl" executive producer Liz Meriwether told TVLine. "We are working on crafting an exit for him that will leave the door open for many more returns, especially since Coach is our resolution to the upcoming 'Who's Jess' Baby Daddy?' storyline."

That last bit was a reference to star Zooey Deschanel's real-life pregnancy, which will not be written into the show. At this point, it's unclear how Coach's departure will be handled, though the loft was getting mighty crowded; perhaps this shakeup will help rejuvenate the comedy, which has dipped considerably in quality since its season two heights.

In the meantime, catch Coach while you still can.

The 'Poltergeist' Trailer Is Here to Scare You (VIDEO)

Posted:

PoltergeistThe first trailer for the "Poltergeist" reboot is here, and just like the 1982 original, the flick looks scary as hell.

As the clip begins, we're introduced to the Bowen family, who just bought a new house. Unfortunately for them, it's situated on a cemetery, and the spirits within are none too pleased about the new residents.

Naturally, they start possessing the Bowens' young daughter, Maddie (Kennedi Clements), eventually stealing her away and wreaking havoc on the rest of the family. The Bowens bring in a paranormal investigator (Jared Harris) to help them take back their house and their daughter, though the man warns them that they've got a lot of work to do.

"They already know what scares you," Harris's character says of the spirits. Cue a shot of a creepy clown doll. (The spirits, evidently, also know what scares moviegoers.)

"Poltergeist" also stars Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie DeWitt, Saxon Sharbino, Kyle Catlett, and Jane Adams. It hits theaters (and your nightmares) on July 24.

NBC Renews 'The Blacklist,' 'Chicago Fire,' 'Chicago P.D.,' 2 More Dramas

Posted:

the blacklist
Five dramas are getting early renewals from NBC, with the network announcing Thursday that "The Blacklist," "Chicago Fire," "Chicago P.D.," "Grimm," and "Law & Order: SVU" are all due for another season.

"The creative vision of the executive producers who've guided these outstanding dramas has been nothing short of incredible," said NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke in a statement. "We're highly appreciative of the passion they bring to their shows at every step of the creative process and we're thrilled to reward that dedication with these renewals."

The renewals come as NBC currently sits at the top of the Nielsen ratings, thanks to the record-setting Super Bowl broadcast and a string of hits. What remains to be seen, however, is whether freshman shows like "Constantine," "The Mysteries of Laura," and "State of Affairs" will get renewed, too. (EW reports that it's still early in the renewals process, so those series could sneak in -- though "Constantine" had its production halted after 13 episodes, which is never a good sign for a show's future.)

"The Blacklist" will be back for a third season, "Chicago Fire" for a fourth, "Chicago P.D." for a third, "Grimm" for a fifth, and "SVU" for a 17th.

'Seventh Son' Star Ben Barnes Really Loves 'The Fabulous Baker Boys' (EXCLUSIVE)

Posted:

Ben Barnes at a Seventh Son screening in NYCIn "Seventh Son," Ben Barnes plays the seventh son of a seventh son, a mystically indebted apprentice who goes on the road with Jeff Bridges, who plays a Spook, the last of a dying breed of knights who defends the innocent from the ghastly forces of darkness (led, in this case, by an incredibly over-the-top Julianne Moore as a fearsome witch). Barnes's Tom follows the Luke Skywalker trajectory of starting off as a slightly above-average farm boy to becoming the savior of the land.

And Barnes has some history with this kind of thing, having starred in the "Chronicles of Narnia" movies (with far more benevolent beasts). When we got to speak to Barnes about "Seventh Son," we asked him about how he came aboard the project, what it was like working with Bridges and his comely costar Alicia Vikander (don't worry - if you don't know who she is, you will), his academic background with fantasy literature and why "The Fabulous Baker Boys" is his favorite Jeff Bridges movie.

Moviefone: How did you initially become involved in the film?

Barnes: I auditioned. I believe that the film was already cast, long before I was involved. I was off working on other projects and then something changed and had to recast and that's when I first heard about it. I auditioned on tape. I like to make my first audition at home, if at all possible, because it's a more relaxed environment. And then if I have to go audition in front of a room full of people, I will... Which I did for this. I had to have a chemistry read with Alicia, which I think was a good ploy.

What was the appeal of this material? Did you know who else was going to be in it?

I was the last piece. So I knew they would all be in it, with the exception of Djimon. But I knew that my scene partners would be Jeff Bridges and Alicia, which I was up for. Jeff Bridges has been one of my heroes since "Fabulous Baker Boys," which I saw when I was a teenager. I loved his charisma. And Alicia is obviously very beguiling; she's so compelling and intriguing and very witch-like. I thought, if there's one person I can see as a mentor, it's Jeff, and Alicia was obviously a great romantic interest. It made my job much easier.

Wait. Rewind. "Fabulous Baker Boys" was what drew you into the Jeff Bridges mystique?

Well, I love "The Big Lebowski" and I love "True Grit" and I love "Crazy Heart." But "Fabulous Baker Boys" is my favorite. He's got such a brooding charm to him. He's so cool.

What about "Starman?"

I haven't seen that in a really long time.

Do yourself a favor, and watch it again.

I will. But it's not going to be "Fabulous Baker Boys" because it's just so fabulous.

So you had all these expectations about how cool he was - did working with him live up to those expectations?

Yes. Initially it was confusing because I found him quite intimidating. Initially, our characters start off on the wrong foot with each other and are mistrustful of each other. And I felt like he was a little mistrustful of me. But maybe that was just my projecting onto his legacy. But as our characters grew closer, he would bring me into his world. He would play me Bob Dylan songs on his guitar. One time he said, "Sit in my chair Jamin." He calls me Jamin, which I think is a cool nickname. Like Benjamin. But just Jamin. Nobody ever gives you a cool nickname when you're an adult. But he did. But he had this lazy chair thing and I thought, Man this is the most comfortable chair ever. And a week or two later, there were two chairs, the same, next to each other. And he said, "I got you one Jamin." So we'd print out lyrics to songs and sing them in between shots and he carries himself with such humor and grace and is so charming.

Did Bridges take any photos of you?

They're famous! I've got the "Seventh Son" book on my coffee table at home. He's put one or two books out. It's pretty cool.

The movie had an insanely protracted release over the past few years. Were you nervous that it would never come out?

No. I didn't expect it to take this long. You want to deliver things hot, fresh out of the oven. It was all political, behind-the-scenes stuff. The effects house that we were using went out of business. And then Legendary partnered with Warner Bros successfully on things like "Inception" and "42" and "300" and they split with them and partnered with Universal. And I don't know anything about that, but if we were moving with them, we had to wait for a slot in Universal's schedule. That's all I really know. But it didn't have anything to do with us. We didn't make any changes or re-edit or redo the effects or reshoot or anything. It was just a matter of timing.

Speaking of effects - you were in the "Narnia" movies, but these creatures are much more fearsome - what was that process like?

Yes, it's a little bit more involved than having tea with badgers. This experience is more about escaping the clutches of an angry Siberian bear or a fire-breathing dragon. But they really don't do almost anything on set anymore, which has it's own challenges since you're just listening to an assistant director yell at you - "The ghosts are moving around you and around you and now it's moving through you. Now you're scared." And you're thinking, This isn't creative. Then they put the ghosts in after the fact and it's pretty cool. It can be really rewarding.

What appeals to you about these fantasy movies?

Well I studied children's literature in school. So from an adult's perspective, I was looking at the "Harry Potter" movies and "The Hobbit" and "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," so I had an affinity for this kind of material even before I started acting.

And now look at you, being chased by imaginary ghosts!

It's destiny! It all came back around!

This is based on a series of fantasy novels.

There's about a dozen of the books. I read four or five of them, just to have the world be present in my system. There was actually a guidebook to the book, about the creatures and how to defeat them. And Jeff gave me a copy early on and said, "Study this. Study this book. This will teach you how to defeat such creatures." It was pretty cool.

When you made it, were you talking about a franchise?

Not me personally. But I think the ending of the film certainly lends itself to further exploration of the relationship between Tom and Alice and it would be certainly cool to see the Spook he becomes.

They didn't say, "You'll be doing this for the next 30 years?"

No. But while we were filming, it was certainly like, "Well you could go like that..." I'd like to pick it up a few years and see what he's become.

Is there a franchise you'd love to be a part of?

I think I've bitten off more of my fair share of fantasy world stuff. But I've never done a sci-fi. I'd love to be involved in a sci-fi. That would be cool.

The 35 Best TV Spinoffs Ever

Posted:

Its strange that "Better Call Saul," which debuts on Feb. 8 on AMC, is so eagerly awaited. After all, how can the series, a prequel of sorts to "Breaking Bad," be anywhere near as good as the show that spawned it? Sure, the adventures of lawyer Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) before he became the money-launderer to Albuquerque's meth-dealing elite ought to be darkly funny in the way that "Breaking Bad" often was. Nonetheless, history is not on the side of the spinoff.

That's because a spinoff is usually an indication of creative bankruptcy, not creative ferment. There's usually something hacky about taking a character introduced in one show and placing him or her in his own series, or expanding a franchise to create a new show that's just like the old show but with a different setting.

Still, as rare as a good spinoff is, it's less rare than you'd think. In fact, many classic shows are spinoffs, including several you may not have realized were spawned from other shows. Here are 35 of the spinoffs that give us hope for the prospects of "Better Call Saul."

Disney's 'Aladdin' Never Looked Better Than in This 'Diamond Edition' Trailer (EXCLUSIVE)

Posted:

For anyone who came of age in the '90s, Disney's "Aladdin" is a sacred text. A loose adaptation of an Arabian folktale and a key film in the Disney Renaissance, it was a wild, fun and fancy-free animated film unlike anything that had come before it (and quite frankly anything since). It had a deeply emotional center but was surrounded by silly sight gags, Broadway musical numbers and the elastic vocal styling of Robin Williams, a performer who seemed tailor made for this type of material. And if you want to be taken back to your childhood for a couple of minutes, just check out our exclusive trailer -- which we're debuting with our friends at Mom.me -- for the new, upcoming "Diamond Edition" of "Aladdin," available on Blu-ray and via digital HD on October 6, 2015. You will be transported.
Disney's 'Aladdin' Blu-Ray Trailer - Exclusive
Judging by the footage, the animation has been cleaned up significantly, to the point that it probably didn't look this good when it hit theaters over the Thanksgiving holiday in 1992. Seriously, it looks stunning. (And it's even more bittersweet watching moments from Williams's performance, since he was so gifted and died so tragically last year. Sigh.) It makes sense that "Aladdin" would be getting the deluxe treatment now; not only did Williams's death renew interest in the film but it was also the basis for a lavish Broadway musical that is still one of the most popular shows.

But hey, he left behind an amazing body of work, and "Aladdin" is certainly one of the crown jewels (at the time Disney CEO Michael Eisner thanked Williams by buying him a Picasso). It's been in the "Disney vault" for a while now, so it's so great to see it out and free in the world -- like a genie who has just escape their magic lamp.

#TBT: Celebrities at Past Grammy Awards Events

Posted:

The 57th Annual Grammy Awards go down this Sunday night, and in honor of the occasion we decided to open the vault and look back at some photos from the show's storied past. This week's throwback Thursday brings you ridiculous '90s and early 2000s fashion (lots of exposed navels), celebrity couples of yesteryear, and famous people randomly hanging out together. Keep an eye out for Christian Slater and Fred Durst sharing some laughs.

2015 may be be the year of performers like Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran, but once upon a time the world was all about stars like Nelly and Kid Rock.

A 'John Wick' Sequel Is Being Actively Developed, Proving That There Is a God

Posted:

One of the very best action movies of last year (and, honestly, one of the very best movies period) was "John Wick," which saw Keanu Reeves play a hitman who gives up his murderous lifestyle for an idyllic suburban life with his wife. When she dies and some thugs murder his dog, he springs back into action, leaving a truly awe-inspiring path of destruction in his wake. While modestly budgeted, "John Wick" was far from a blockbuster, instead enjoying the "sleeper hit" label (it made double its production budget back, but lord only knows how much it cost to market). Those of us who loved the movie, though, silently prayed that John Wick would return.

Our prayers have been answered.

During a chat with Film.com, stunt coordinators-turned-directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch revealed that they were "in development" on a sequel. " "We have ideas for days and without blinking twice we know we can outdo the action from the original," Stahelski told the site. "It's the matter of story and how much you like the character. That's always the most important. If there's great action but you have a character that no one likes and doesn't have charisma you're not going to watch it. Look at any great action star, whether it's Harrison Ford or Liam Neeson or Robert Downey Jr., pick a name, you love the guy first. Good action, bad action, you just love them in action. So we want to make sure we have a story and a character that everybody loves and then we'll dress it with action that we promise will be awesome."

While Reeves' involvement isn't confirmed, he seemingly had a wonderful time with the first film and in habiting that character. I bet people will keep asking him whether or not he's back but I'm thinking, yeah, he's back.

The New 'Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2' Trailer Proves a Hero Is Never Off Duty (EXCLUSIVE)

Las Vegas is not ready for the likes of Paul Blart, mall cop.
Exclusive: Paul Blart Mall Cop 2 Trailer
We've got the exclusive trailer for "Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2," the sequel to the 2009 hit starring Kevin James. This time around, Blart is invading Vegas for a much-needed vacation with his daughter when a nefarious crew takes down their hotel. That means it's time to suit up, grab a sidearm, and hop onto a Segway -- because a true hero is never off duty.

"There is one man who goes above and beyond," Blart shouts. "And I am that man!"

Hey, not just anybody can become a security guard; it takes a special breed. A very special breed.

"Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2" also stars Ana Gasteyer, Neal McDonough, and D.B. Woodside, and opens in theaters April 17.

This New 'Furious 7' Trailer Is Totally Bonkers (VIDEO)

Posted:

Yes, all of the "Fast and the Furious" movies have been, to one degree or another, completely insane. This is a franchise that started off as a kind of drag racing riff on "Point Break" and turned into one of the most elaborately engineered action franchises in the history of cinema. But "Furious 7," opening in April, seems to take that to an almost uncomfortable degree. In the new trailer alone, there are cars flying out of the back of planes, a car jumping between two Abu Dhabi skyscrapers, and The Rock flying out of a building and onto a car (there's always a car). "This time, it ain't just about being fast," Vin Diesel growls in the 3-minute trailer. Yeah, this is going to be ridiculously awesome and awesomely ridiculous.

There's so much to love about this trailer and it's so full of stuff, that I almost wish I hadn't watched it. The "Fast and Furious" franchise is one of the most purely enjoyable in movies right now, and with this new entry carrying the bittersweet tinge of being the send off for Paul Walker's Bryan character, well, it could also be the best of the bunch. (Also heartening: the fact that the movie's template has been switched up, yet again, to resemble a revenge movie and James Wan, director of the superb "The Conjuring," is behind the wheel.) As Tyrese says, "This right here, takes crazy to a whole 'nother level." After you watch the trailer, you'll handily agree.

Just watch it.

Best of Late Night TV: Ryan Reynolds' Baby Name and Jimmy Fallon's Trip To Saved by the Bell (VIDEO)

Posted:

saved by the bell reunionIf you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.

Did you know Jimmy Fallon went to high School with the "Saved by the Bell" cast? Because he took a walk down memory lane with the likes of Zack Morris, A.C. Slater, Kelly Kapowski and Jessie Spano, and it was completely amazing. But did Jesse utter the iconic words "I'm so excited. I'm so excited. I'm so so scared?" You'll have to watch to find out.

Jimmy also unveiled the new 2015 Sports Illustrated swimsuit addition, featuring cover model Hannah Davis in all her glory. And you better believe Hannah herself made an appearance! Before walking off stage with Steve Higgins....

Jeff Bridges visited "Jimmy Kimmel Live" and while there he treated "Big Lebowski" fans to a huge treat by performing "The Man in Me" (aka the movie's theme song). The moment was one for the memory books -- partially because Jimmy was wearing a "Big Lebowski" sweater.

The entire world is obsessed with what Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively named their baby (hint: it's not Violet), but Ryan straight-up refused to tell the "Late Show" audience his big secret. However, he did admit that it's a family name, and he mused on how he's more in love with Blake than ever.

Mila Kunis is also a rookie parent, and with new motherhood comes new bra sizes. Mila sat down with Conan to chat about her XXL breasts, and he asked her a plethora of awkward questions about her "chestal area."

Finally, Gabrielle Union hit up "Late Night" to talk about her feud with Charles Barkley. And she most definitely called him "the guy that insists on coming to to book club but didn't read the book, but wants to dominate the conversation." Balls in your court, Charles.
