The 10 Best Action Scenes of the Past Decade Posted: 12 Feb 2015 11:00 PM PST In Kingsman: The Secret Service, director Matthew Vaughn takes the tropes of old-school spy movies and ratchets them up to 11. Formerly silly or innocuous gadgets now create bloody messes. Colin Firth's gentleman spy is brutal enough to make Sean Connery blush. However, it's all done with a sly wink and nod. Above all other things, the action is fun. More importantly, it's unique enough to completely stand out in a landscape full of movies where heroes obliterate countless enemies and make it look easy. To celebrate the assured action of Kingsman, we pored over the action films of the past 10 years and created a list of our favorite action scenes. And then we whittled it down. And whittled it down further. Eventually, after losing scenes we love from movies we love... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
The Geek Beat: Our Favorite Nerdy Movie Couples Posted: 12 Feb 2015 09:30 PM PST With Valentine's Day right around the corner, it's time once again to turn our attention to the romantic corners of the geeky movie world. In the past, I've offered some suggestions for romantic movies with geeky roots, but this time around I'm calling out some of the couples whose chemistry turns geeky movies into proper date-night fare. In honor of Valentine's Day, here are some of the greatest movie couples who do it all for the glory of love... while keeping things geeky. Peter Parker and Mary-Jane Watson (Spider-Man) Sony may have seen the need to reboot the Spider-Man franchise after the third installment of the original series, but one aspect of those first few movies that worked remarkably well was the on-screen pairing of Tobey... Comics on Film: Two Major Comics Stories That Marvel Studios Can Now Do with Spider-Man Posted: 12 Feb 2015 06:00 PM PST We've been banging the drum for a while now, advocating that Spider-Man return home to Marvel Studios to take his rightful place alongside the established superstars created by its films, like Iron Man, Captain America and the Guardians of the Galaxy. Now, with the recent news announcing a major deal between Sony Pictures and Disney, that former fan pipe dream is a reality. Bringing Peter Parker and his supporting cast into the mix for the Marvel cinematic universe does a lot to restore the narrative vitality of the film series, even though it didn't really need a restoration yet. Spider-Man is Marvel's most visibly identifiable character, with the iconic costume designed by the great Steve Ditko being universally recognizable the world over... 'Star Wars' Bites: Billy Dee Williams Teases More Lando, a Fan Cruise, a Fan's Funeral and More Posted: 12 Feb 2015 04:30 PM PST Return of Lando: Could Lando Calrissian show up in the new Star Wars trilogy? Actor Billy Dee Williams teased in an interview, "I have a feeling I’m going to show up. There’s nothing I can really discuss about it at this stage." He hints that his character could be reintroduced in the second installment, Episode VIII, just as Lando made his first appearance in the second part of the original trilogy. "I did Empire and then I did Return of the Jedi, but I came in after everyone else was introduced … So I think they’re probably proceeding in that way." Star Wars Cruise: Disney Cruise Lines will now offer a Star Wars day with some packages beginning in January 2016. Guests on board can enjoy the first six... Watch what happens when two big, topical stories -- that of Jon Stewart announcing his departure from The Daily Show and the release of next week's Hot Tub Time Machine 2 -- collide in a very amusing way. Yup, that's current Daily Show correspondent Jessica Williams acting as Daily Show host in 2025, which is the year our heroes (Craig Robinson, Rob Corddry, Clark Duke) travel to in the sequel. They're not aware of what year it is though, so they turn on the television and there's The Daily Show with Williams in the captain's chair. Since Stewart just made his announcement this week, there's obviously no word on who... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
