Update: 'Chappie' Director Neill Blomkamp to Make 'Alien' Sequel Next Posted: 18 Feb 2015 10:49 PM PST Update: 2/18/15: Both 20th Century Fox and director Neill Blomkamp have confirmed that his next movie will, in fact, be an Alien sequel, as detailed below. Blomkamp shared the news on Instagram. Considering she's part of the art -- and confirmed she's willing to do it with Blomkamp -- we assume Sigourney Weaver will also return and reprise her Ellen Ripley character one more time. Note that this Alien sequel is not Prometheus 2 (The Wrap says the new Alien sequel will take place after Prometheus 2), but we do wonder whether the two will crossover in some way -- after all, the "shared universe" is all the rage these days. Um... So I think it's officially my next film. #alien A photo posted by Brownsnout (@neillblomkamp... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
The Geek Beat: We Hand Out Oscars for the Year's Best Geek Movies Posted: 18 Feb 2015 10:00 PM PST The Academy Awards have a long-established history of overlooking sci-fi, fantasy and superhero fare, but with so many great films coming out of our favorite, geek-friendly genres lately, it's only a matter of time before the Oscars are forced to acknowledge what we've known all along: geeky films can be great films, too. With that in mind, I thought it might be interesting to ponder which films and actors might take home an Oscar in some of the major categories if the pool of eligible films were limited to last year's sci-fi, superhero and fantasy offerings (i.e., the geeky stuff). Basically, this is how the Academy Awards would pan out if yours truly was the one-man awards committee – and after reading this, it's quite likely that we'll all be glad... New 'SPECTRE' Images Prove Bond Girl Monica Bellucci Is Aging Backwards Posted: 18 Feb 2015 08:00 PM PST Okay seriously, how does Monica Bellucci do it? When did she discover the Fountain of Youth and how come there hasn't been a documentary about that yet? In these newly released images (via Sony Pictures) from the production of the latest James Bond adventure, SPECTRE, we see Bellucci (51) standing alongside 007 himself, Daniel Craig. The duo is in Rome for the next leg of shooting (you'll remember they were just filming in the mountains of Austria), and according to Variety there's a whole lot happening in the Italian city. "The five-week Rome shot will also comprise a high-speed chase along the Tiber with one or more cars flying off into the river and James Bond parachuting from a helicopter onto the 15th century Ponte Sisto bridge. Other chases... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Infographic: Here's What the Average Best Picture Oscar Winner Looks Like Posted: 18 Feb 2015 06:23 PM PST The Oscars are this weekend, which means you've still got a few days to try and cram in all of this year's big nominees before the ceremony starts on Sunday, February 22. That way you can feel fully justified in throwing your arms up in protest when whatever you thought would win Best Picture doesn't. But before looking forward and trying to guess what the Academy is going to vote on, let's strip away all of the emotions, take a cold, mathematical look at the past and crunch the numbers on a few key stats about what several decades worth of Best Picture winners actually look like. Click image to enlarge [Infographic by John LaRue] And now that we've done that, let's look at this year's crop of nominees to see who is closest to the average shape... Posted: 18 Feb 2015 04:30 PM PST Interstellar first took off in theaters last November and people still can't stop talking about Christopher Nolan's science fiction epic. Granted, a lot of that talk is arguing about some of the logic in the movie, but not all of it is coming from armchair scientists on the Internet. Fellow sci-fi director Rian Johnson (whose last movie was Looper and whose next movie is Star Wars: Episode VIII) recently hosted a Q&A session with Nolan after a screening of the latter's hotly debated blockbuster. But don't worry, you won't need a time machine to hear the talk; the whole 32-minute back-and-forth has been posted online for anyone to listen to. Johnson and Nolan run through the history of the project, the complications of making it, and how the visual... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Watch: Don't Call Tommy Lee Jones' 'The Homesman' a Western (Exclusive) Posted: 18 Feb 2015 03:00 PM PST As pointed out in this week's DVD and Blu-ray guide, The Homesman is one of the best movies of 2014 that got wrongfully overshadowed by bigger studio movies vying for Oscar gold. Set in the 1850s, it is a taught, gripping, often harrowing tale of a frontier woman (Hilary Swank) who takes on a job no man wants of transporting three young women, all driven slightly insane by the harsh realities of frontier life, to another state. That sounds like the perfect setting and plot for a Western. Just don't tell that to Tommy Lee Jones, the movie's director, cowriter and costar. As you can see in the below behind-the-scenes video, Jones doesn't think highly of the word Western. And it's not so much that the movie he made doesn't fit the bill, it's just that he... Pixar Might Be Working on Its First Musical Posted: 18 Feb 2015 01:30 PM PST The wild success of Disney Animation's Frozen has all but guaranteed more upcoming musicals chucked into our animated-movie diet. Pixar already flirted with the format with its latest short, Lava, and now rumors (via Film Divider) suggest the animation giant might be working on its first full-length musical as we speak. The news comes from an unlikely source: singer-songwriter Randy Newman. While guesting on an episode of Saturday Night at the Movies on Classic FM, Newman spoke briefly about the somewhat tense relationship he has with Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich, admitting that he himself has a reputation for "being a little trouble." Newman followed up by noting that he won't be working with Unkrich again, but that the director was currently working on a... Posted: 18 Feb 2015 01:22 PM PST The Psychopath Test: Scarlett Johansson will star in The Psychopath Test, a psychological thriller that will be directed by Jay Roach (Meet the Parents). Kristen Gore is set to adapt Jon Ronson's book, which explores the world of "remorseless, deadly psychopaths" and the industry that has sprung up to diagnose and treat them. [Deadline] Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales: The Pirates are going Down Under. Production has begun in Australia on the fifth installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean series, starring Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. This time, Jack is pitted against Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), who has escaped from the Devil's Triangle and is determined to kill every pirate at sea. Jack's only hope of survival is...
