Lin-Manuel Miranda's Musical Dog Movie 'Vivo' Finds New Life

Posted: 14 Dec 2016 08:30 PM PST

Everyone in Hollywood wants to be in the Lin-Manuel Miranda business thanks to the massive, runaway success of Hamilton. But while much of the world discovered his talents in 2016, this isn't exactly a new spotlight for Miranda. Before Hamilton, Miranda created another hit musical called In The Heights. Naturally Hollywood came calling for a big screen version. Universal ended up landing the rights to the movie back in 2008, and while that version ultimately never happened (another is now in the works), Miranda used his foot in the Hollywood door to get involved with an animated musical called Vivo set up with DreamWorks Animation. DreamWorks ultimately ended up passing on Vivo, but that wasn't the end of its story. As Deadline reports, Sony Pictures Animation has not...

'Manchester by the Sea' Leads the 2017 Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations

Posted: 14 Dec 2016 07:00 PM PST

Nominations for the 23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced this morning, and while much of the recognition went to the same names who've been dominating the 2016 awards season -- Manchester by the Sea, for instance, dominates the movie categories with four nods (for ensemble, Casey Affleck for best actor, Michelle Williams for best supporting actress and Lucas Hedges for best supporting actor) -- there were also plenty of surprises. Notable movie snubs include no La La Land in the ensemble category and a complete exclusion of Loving, despite stars Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga otherwise being consistent contenders in the races for best actor and best actress so far. In their place, Captain Fantastic and The Girl on the...

'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' Villain to Be 'Robin Hood: Origins' Villain

Posted: 14 Dec 2016 05:30 PM PST

In Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, a new villain enters the universe. His name is Orson Krennic, his job is director of Advanced Weapons Research for the Imperial military and his disposition is always angry and sour. As played by Ben Mendelsohn, Krennic is a prototypical villain. He is willing to stand toe to toe against any other Imperial officer, including his superiors, and is more than eager to dish out deadly punishment against any he may choose, guilty of some offense or not. Mendelsohn's chilling performance is a timely reminder of the Australian actor's talent at capturing the very soul of the characters he plays, often as villains and/or criminals. His menacing role in Animal Kingdom led to more work in Hollywood as a bad guy.   Mendelsohn may next...

See The New 'Star Wars' Planet That Was Directly Inspired By Ridley Scott's 'Alien'

Posted: 14 Dec 2016 04:00 PM PST

Earlier this month we had a chance to sit down with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story director Gareth Edwards and we asked him for some of the films that inspired this new chapter in the Star Wars series.  “Films that I used in there that got high score were Apocalypse Now; a little of Thin Red Line, and there’s a planet in our film that’s very much inspired by Alien,” he said. “Also Blade Runner, THX-1138 and of course the original Star Wars.” Fans on the lookout for nods to these aforementioned films will spot some Blade Runner similarities very early on, and the Apocalypse Now and Thin Red Line stuff will filter in towards the end. When it comes to Alien, though, Edwards wasn't kidding. There is an entire...

Watch: The First 'Despicable Me 3' Trailer Is Totally Obsessed with the 1980s

Posted: 14 Dec 2016 02:30 PM PST

After Minions took the world by storm to the tune of $1 billion in 2015, following the enormous success of the first two Despicable Me movies, was there any doubt we'd get Despicable Me 3? Gru and his beloved minions are back, and finally we get to see the first trailer for what's sure to be one of next summer's biggest blockbusters. It sheds some more light on the plot details, of which we haven't known much other than Gru's long-lost twin brother, Drew, shows up (both voiced by Steve Carell), and Trey Parker voices a villain named Balthazar Bratt, who from the looks of it is completely obsessed with all things related to the 1980s... and bubble gum.  Check it out and mark your calendars for June 30, 2017.

First 'Dunkirk' Trailer: Christopher Nolan Promises to Turn Hope Into a Weapon

Posted: 14 Dec 2016 01:26 PM PST

Christopher Nolan is one of our most sentimental and optimistic storytellers working today. His Batman trilogy is ultimately all about a man rising above the self to do what his city needs (even if it's not what they deserve). Interstellar is about humans, despite being on the ropes, finally stepping out into the stars. His movies, even ones with dark subject matter like Memento, always explore some glimmer of humanity that saves people from becoming the worst version of themselves. Judging by the first trailer for Nolan's new movie, Dunkirk, that optimism isn't going to change any time soon. Based on the true story of the beach that served as a crucial evacuation point during World War II, Dunkirk looks like it's all about people coming together in the darkest...

Movie News: Why Ben Affleck Is "Not in Any Hurry" to Make His 'Batman' Movie

Posted: 14 Dec 2016 12:00 PM PST

Jekyll: This past July, we heard that Chris Evans, also known as Captain America (above), would star in Jekyll, based on the modern-day BBC miniseries adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic story about a dangerous man with a split personality. Now comes word that Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) will direct the project, though it's not known when it might start production. [Deadline]   Batman: Ben Affleck says he is "not in any hurry" to make the Batman solo movie that he is currently cowriting and is slated to direct. Affleck says: “I’m a real believer in not reverse engineering projects to meet a window or a date, but rather when you get the right story, the right idea, the right thing, then you make the movie. That’s what...
