After 'Silence,' What's Martin Scorsese Doing This Year?

Posted: 08 Jan 2016 06:00 PM PST

Martin Scorsese may be 73 years of age, yet there is no sign that he's slowing down. He is currently in post-production on Silence, a historical drama starring Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver and Liam Neeson. It's a dream project for Scorsese, one that he's wanted to make for years, following two missionaries as they deal with persecution, martyrdom and grace in 17th century Japan. Neeson said that Scorsese prepares intensely for every film he makes: "He supplies 200 percent; all he wants from you is 100 percent." Silence is aiming for release later this year; it's already been rumored for a premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Before he got busy with that project, however, Scorsese helped to develop Vinyl, a new dramatic series that will debut on...

Aaron Sorkin Will Make Directorial Debut with 'Molly's Game'

Posted: 08 Jan 2016 04:30 PM PST

Aaron Sorkin is one of the relatively few screenwriters who have gained name recognition solely on the basis of their writing. Unlike, say, Woody Allen, who has been nominated for an Academy Award 16 times as a writer but is still better known as a director and actor, Sorkin is known through and through for his scripts. He didn't start out as a writer, though. Initially he was an actor and it was only by chance one night more than 30 years ago that he tried his hand at writing a play. He stayed up all night and decided he liked writing. "When I was writing dialogue, I felt a confidence that I’d never felt as an actor -- and I was a pretty cocky actor,” Sorkin told The Hollywood Reporter. “Honestly, I feel like that night has never ended. It’s...

Comics on Film: 5 Great 'Wonder Woman' Comics to Read Before Seeing 'Batman v Superman' '

Posted: 08 Jan 2016 03:00 PM PST

Superman. Batman. Iron Man. Captain America. Spider-Man. All of these characters and many more are often thought of as the biggest icons in the superhero genre. With lasting and unforgettable legacies going back to the early days of the 20th century, nobody can dispute these characters' position in popular culture, nor can anyone even feasibly argue that they're not, in some form, a part of the literary canon. One character in particular, though, has only ever had a limited appearance at the table alongside the biggest superheroic icons, but is just as deserving as any of them for the unique and powerful niche that she maintains. Maybe it'll take an appearance in a big-budget comic book blockbuster to solidify her position, and it just so happens that we'll be...

Proving this year is truly up for grabs when it comes to the big film awards, the BAFTAs -- or the British equivalent of the Academy Awards -- doled out their nominations for the year, favoring Steven Spielberg's Bridge of Spies and Carol, both receiving nine nods each, including Best Film.  Joining them in the Best Film category are The Big Short, The Revenant and Spotlight, with more blockbuster-y favorites like Mad Max: Fury Road and The Martian finding nods in the technical categories (Mad Max snagged seven) and, with The Martian, the Best Director (Ridley Scott) and Best Actor (Matt Damon) categories, too. Other awards season favorites like Brooklyn and The Danish Girl found nods in the Best British Film category (among others), while the wild card Ex Machina...
