Watch Free Documentaries in Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Kartemquin Films

Posted: 25 Jan 2016 08:30 PM PST

If you've never heard of Kartemquin Films, that's okay. Although they've been around for half a century, and they produced such classics as Hoop Dreams, as well as one of the most acclaimed releases of 2015, Almost There, they aren't a household name unless your household is filled with documentary filmmakers and fans. It's also okay because you now have a good reason to make it up to them and become acquainted with their work: they're streaming all their films online for free. Not all at the same time, however, and not for very long. Instead, every week this year, in celebration of Kartemquin's 50th birthday, the Chicago-based company is debuting another of their documentaries, in chronological order starting with the recently restored...

New 'Batman v Superman' TV Spots Start to Pick Sides

Posted: 25 Jan 2016 07:00 PM PST

Even though the title is Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it's probably a safe bet that Batman and Superman don't fight each other non-stop throughout the entire movie. At some point they're going to have a mutual enemy that brings them together and paves the way for the Dawn of Justice part of the title. But until we get to the actual movie, the marketing is basically going to be the same debate that's been raging in school yards and on online message boards for decades: whose side are you on, Batman's or Superman's? These two new TV spots don't have enough time to layout each hero's advantages and disadvantages, but they do try to make an argument for why the other needs to be stopped. And to be fair, they do both raise some good...

Watch the Director of 'The Raid' Experiment With Doing a Bloodless Action Scene

Posted: 25 Jan 2016 05:00 PM PST

The Raid and The Raid 2 have some of the best fight scenes not just of the last few years, but of the entirety of mankind's existence on Planet Earth. That may sound like hyperbole, but it's not. Those two movies are why people immediately started wondering when director Gareth Evans was going to make a Hollywood movie, the train of thought being that if he can deliver that kind of action on relatively small budgets, imagine what he would do with a massive budget. There's a big gap in that train's tracks, though. Hollywood doesn't make movies like The Raid. Sure, Hollywood loves action. Hollywood loves fighting and explosions and ridiculously elaborate chase scenes. But the Hollywood version of those scenes is rarely, if ever, as genuinely violent as...

Posted: 25 Jan 2016 04:00 PM PST

UPDATE 1/25/17: And the winners are in. The Big Short, Inside Out and Amy all took home their respective top prizes. So if you want to hedge your bets on Oscar chances for those movies, pay attention to these wins.   Previously: The Academy Awards are without question the biggest deal as far as a Hollywood's annual awards bodies are concerned. But rarely does a movie just show up on Oscar voting ballots without making a few crucial stops at some awards groups that may not be household names but that are plenty influential within Hollywood. One of those big groups is the Producers Guild of America. The PGA is comprised of over 7,000 film and television producers, so getting nominated for an award is kind of a big deal. It's recognition from your peers...

'Labyrinth' Sequel on Its Way From 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Cowriter

Posted: 25 Jan 2016 01:30 PM PST

When David Bowie passed away recently, many fans shared fond memories of his starring performance as the Goblin King in Labyrinth, Jim Henson's 1986 fantasy. Sure, maybe the movie as a whole wasn't the knockout dazzler that everyone wished it was, yet its goofy charms and original approach have held up well over the years and Bowie's sincere performance remains a highlight of his movie career. Labyrinth was a disappointment at the box office, earning less than $13 million during its initial theatrical release, but its enduring appeal has seen it perform well on home video and win many more devoted fans. Now a new version will attempt to tap into the magic of the original. Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) has been hired to write the screenplay, according to...
