Sundance 2016 Distribution Guide: Here's What Movies Have Been Bought at the Festival So Far

Posted: 27 Jan 2016 10:00 PM PST

The 2016 Sundance Film Festival is well underway, but if you're not there and feel a terrible pain like you're missing out on a bunch of great movies, we do have good news for you. You will be able to see those movies! Well, some of them at least. There are over 100 movies that premiere at Sundance each year, and while a few of them do already have distributors and release dates in place, that's usually not the case. In fact, most movies that premiere at Sundance are hoping to grab enough attention at the festival to snag a highly coveted distribution deal. Often these deals take months to happen, but distributors do try to lock down some of the more buzzed about titles as soon as possible. So here's a list of everything that's been picked up at Sundance so...

Sundance Buzz: 'Chronicle' Meets 'Iron Man' Meets 'Menace II Society' in 'Sleight'

Posted: 27 Jan 2016 08:15 PM PST

The best genre movie at this year's Sundance Film Festival is surprisingly not screening in the Midnight section alongside the fest's most talked-about horror and sci-fi titles. Instead it's part of the NEXT section, which over the past few years has emerged as Sundance's most exciting programming slate because it not only features films from emerging directors, but these films are also the ones that tend to take the biggest creative risks -- both in form and in storytelling.  The movie I'm talking about is called Sleight, and it comes from Bad Robot veteran and first-time director J.D. Dillard. If you tossed Chronicle, Iron Man and, yes, Menace II Society into a blender, you might wind up with something like Sleight -- about an young aspiring magician...

Great Scott! New DeLoreans Will Be on the Market Next Year!

Posted: 27 Jan 2016 06:40 PM PST

Typically car companies try to be innovative, pushing design and technology forward with each year's new model. But nobody wants to see the DeLorean Motor Company make cars that seem like they belong in our time let alone the future. Well, maybe they'd like them to fly and run on garbage, but as far as the appearance of the DeLorean DMC-12 goes, there's no reason to update the look of the vehicle from its only ever design, from the early 1980s. Founder and namesake John DeLorean actually hated the idea of drastic changes to car models every year anyway, believing them to be just a sales gimmick.  So, when the newly rebooted incarnation of the company gets going on manufacturing all new DeLoreans very soon, they'll still be the same old style made famous by...

Sundance Buzz: 'The Birth of a Nation' Makes History, But Is It Good?

Posted: 27 Jan 2016 04:30 PM PST

When the dust had cleared and the multiple standing ovations were over, Nate Parker's The Birth of a Nation sold to Fox Searchlight for a record-setting $17.5 million, officially becoming the biggest film at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival and an instant Oscar candidate. But is it good? Short answer: yes, it's good. And while the film -- about the real-life story of Nat Turner, who lead a grisly slave rebellion back in the 1830s -- does feel like the product of a first-time filmmaker versus a seasoned veteran, The Birth of a Nation is just as powerful and necessary as 12 Years a Slave. Nate Parker also achieved something we've never seen in all our years attending Sundance: a standing ovation BEFORE the film even started. (See an image below.) Obviously the...

New 'Spider-Man' Heading to IMAX; Here's What We Know About the Movie

Posted: 27 Jan 2016 01:30 PM PST

It's been nearly one year since we heard that Spider-Man would be joining the Marvel cinematic universe. Over the next few months we learned that his first appearance would come in Captain America: Civil War (from Disney), Tom Holland (above) would be portraying the webslinger, Jon Watts (indie darling Cop Car) would be directing, and that his very own solo movie (from Sony) would hit theaters in 2017. More recently, the release date for the Spider-Man movie was pushed forward to July 7, 2017 and now comes word that Sony is planning to roll it out in IMAX 3D. Beyond that, however, why haven't we heard anything more about the movie? The good news is that the release date was moved forward several weeks and that Sony is sufficiently confident in the movie to stake...
