The Clones Go Down the Rabbit Hole in 'Orphan Black' Season 4 Teaser

Posted:

Orphan Black"Orphan Black" is taking us down the rabbit hole — but what we find on the other side looks to be a nightmarish Wonderland.

BBC America released a new teaser for season 4 of the sci-fi thriller drama, and as the show loves to do, it raises a ton of questions. Tatiana Maslany reads a selection from "Alice in Wonderful" in the voices of clones Sarah, Helena, Cosima, and Alison. And at the end, she says, "The only way to go forward is to go back" — over a reversed shot of Beth, the cop clone who jumped in front of a train way back in the pilot.
What does it all mean? Well, that's a question "Orphan Black" viewers are used to asking themselves on a weekly basis. Will season 4 feature flashbacks to Beth's life? Dig even deeper into the past of the clone experiment? Bring Beth back from the dead somehow?

"Orphan Black" season 4 is set to premiere sometime this spring.

NBC's Next Live Musical Is 'Hairspray'

Posted:

Hairspray 2007Bust out those aerosol cans — NBC has chosen "Hairspray" to be its next live musical.

The network announced the news at the Television Critics Association press tour. "Hairspray" follows in the wake of previous live musical events "The Wiz," "Peter Pan," and "The Sound of Music."

Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will oversee the show, which will air December 2016. NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt told reporters that the musical's focus on race relations and diversity was a major factor in its selection.

"Hairspray" is set in 1962 Baltimore, where a plump teenager named Tracy Turnblad tries out to be a dancer on a local TV show and protests racial segregation.

Zadan and Meron considered other musicals, including "Music Man" and "A Few Good Men," but the former depended too much on perfect casting, while the latter faced rights issues.

And might we see John Travolta reprise his role as Tracy's mom, Edna, from the 2007 movie adaptation? Greenblatt indicated it's a possibility!

The 'Friends' Cast Is Reuniting! This Is Not a Drill!

Posted:

FriendsThe cast of "Friends" will be there for James Burrows.

The six stars of the now-classic NBC sitcom — Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer, — are reuniting on screen for the first time since 2004. If if you're hoping for a follow-up to the series, sorry! Instead, the cast is getting together to honor veteran director Burrows, who recently helmed his 1,000th episode of television.

Burrows directed many episodes of "Friends," as well as other hit shows including "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," "Taxi," "Cheers," "Two and a Half Men," and "The Big Bang Theory." He crossed the 1,000-marker line last November with NBC's midseason comedy, "Crowded."

The Burrows tribute is a two-hour-long special being likened to the "Saturday Night Live" 40th anniversary extravaganza. Other luminary casts will also join in the fun, including the stars of "Frasier," "Will & Grace," and "The Big Bang Theory." The special will air Sunday, Feb. 21 at 9 p.m.

'Prison Break' Sequel Filming Is 'Aiming for Spring,' But There's a Snag

Posted:

You haven't forgotten about the "Prison Break" revival, right? Everyone was hyped on the news last summer, but what's the latest update on the 10-episode sequel? Stars Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell talked to TVLine about the difficulties in scheduling the new series around their work with "DC's Legends of Tomorrow." Both actors are committed to that show's 16-episode debut, so fitting in "Prison Break" is a challenge.

As Purcell put it, the studios involved are "negotiating the complexities" of a deal, but he said the project is "moving forward." Miller was a bit more hopeful in his comment, while acknowledging the scheduling issues. "There are a lot of moving parts to that conversation, but we are hopeful that we'll be able to shoot something this spring. 'Prison Break' is taking its cue from 'Legends,' which is the priority. So we're aiming for spring."

"Legends of Tomorrow" premieres January 21 on The CW, with Purcell as Mick Rory/Heat Wave and Miller as Leonard Snart/Captain Cold. We're all in favor of that "Arrow" and "The Flash" spinoff to succeed, but it worries us that they seem unsure about the "Prison Break" start date.

As we were all told last summer, the "Prison Break" event series, modeled after FOX's "24: Live Another Day," is a sequel, of sorts. As FOX co-chairman and CEO Dana Walden put it at the time, "It picks up the characters several years after we left them in the last season of the show. The brothers will be back. Some of the iconic characters from that show will be back. I don't think [executive producer producer] Paul [Scheuring] knows exactly where he's going over the 10-episode arc, but it definitely will address some questions that were set up at the end of the series for a new audience."

Cross your fingers that the answers come sooner rather than later.

Rude or Funny? Jennifer Lawrence Fans Debate Golden Globes Reporter Incident

Posted:

73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards - Press RoomWas Jennifer Lawrence rude to call out a reporter in the 2016 Golden Globe Awards press room? Was the reporter rude to break out his phone? Are the fans being rude? Is no one rude and it's all a big misunderstanding/overreaction?

After JLaw won her Golden Globe for "Joy," she did what winners do -- she went to the press to answer a ton of questions. But now a brief clip from that Q&A is making the rounds, with Jennifer getting sassy with a foreign reporter who was attempting to ask a question -- while using his phone.

Here's a mini transcript:

Reporter: "How do see yourself for the Oscars night?"

Lawrence: "You can't live your whole life behind your phone, bro."

Reporter: "Huh?"

Lawrence: "You just can't do that. You gotta live in the now, you know?"

Reporter: "Oh, sorry! Sorry. [Laughs] How do you see yourself for the Oscar night, and how was working--"

Lawrence: "We're at the Golden Globes. If you put your phone down, you'd know that."

That's what has been making the rounds but, as Entertainment Tonight noted, it's only half of their exchange. If you watch the full video below, their talk comes around the 5:05 mark and includes the reporter laughing and asking a follow-up question, which she answered normally. It seemed fine, not exactly an awkward moment.

But the call-out led some fans to call Jen "rude," since he's obviously a foreign journalist and some fans speculated that he may have been using his phone to translate. But others who were actually there challenged that idea.

So now if you read the comments under that YouTube video, or on Twitter, or elsewhere online, the debate is raging on about whether she was rude or not.

For example, Jennifer Lawrence has an official Facebook page where she posted a photo thanking the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for her Golden Globe award. The comment section of that post includes a heated debate, with opinions like this one:

Yuriria Marvan Evans: I'm going to have to unfollow you Ms. Lawrence. A reporter deserves respect. It was obvious that English was his second language, he might have needed his phone for translation, you didn't even let him finish the question. He knew he was at the Golden Globes, not the Oscars. Fame and money are not everything in life.

That has 2,628 "likes" at this point. However, it has also been challenged by people saying she was just being sarcastic, fans shouldn't be so easily offended, and the guy wasn't even using the phone for translating. Here's a reply to that post:

Alex Zimmer: You weren't in the press room, just ask to person who were there. Everybody in this room is saying he wasn't using his phone for questions or translation, he was taking picture of her, at the same time he was talking to her. She wasn't that rude. There are nicer way to talk, but she wasn't rude, she could have say " Look at me when you're talking." But she didn't. Stop doing drama for nothing."

What do you think? Was she rude to the reporter or just JLaw being the snarky lass we've always known and loved?

'Pearl Harbor' Honest Trailer Fears When Michael Bay 'Gets His Hands on 9/11'

Posted:

Poor Michael Bay. Rich Michael Bay, of course, but the director is such an easy target it sometimes seems unfair. It doesn't really seem unfair when it comes to "Pearl Harbor," though, and the 2001 Ben Affleck cheese-fest got itself roasted as the latest victim of Screen Junkies's Honest Trailers.

The "Pearl Harbor" honest trailer begins with a swipe at Bay's new movie, "13 Hours":

"Before he cashes in on the tragic loss of American lives in his Benghazi movie, revisit Michael Bay's attempt to cash in on the loss of even more American lives in 'Pearl Harbor.'"

This three-hour super-'merican "fan fiction version of history" is mocked for its "stupid campy made-up love triangle," "wacky slapstick comedy," terrible Southern accents, and blatant attempt to rip-off the superior "Titanic."

The trailer acknowledges the film's cool battle scenes, and its Oscar for sound design, and actually hits a serious note to show photos of real heroes of Pearl Harbor. However, the end quote is rather chilling: "You guys know it's only a matter of time before Michael Bay gets his hands on 9/11, right?" Yikes.

Here goes:

Golden Globes 2016 Ratings Down From Tina and Amy, Up for Ricky Gervais

Posted:

NBC's "73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards" - ShowLet's face it, there's only one Tina and Amy. Well, technically, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are two different people, but as OK as the ratings were for Ricky Gervais's fourth time hosting the Golden Globe Awards, they were nothing compared to the power of T&A.

According to Variety, the 2016 Golden Globes had 18.5 million viewers and a 5.5 rating in the 18-49 demo. That's down about 4 percent in viewership from last year's show, hosted by Tina and Amy, which had 19.31 million total viewers and a 5.8 rating.

However, those 2015 numbers were down from the height of the 2014 show, which, per Deadline, had 20.9 million viewers -- making it the most-watched Globes since 2004 -- with a 6.5 rating that was a seven-year high. That 2014 telecast was the second from Tina and Amy, and probably enjoyed a boost from the buzz of their 2013 show, which garnered 19.7 million and a 6.4 rating.

Ricky hosted the 2012 Globes, and his 2015 show grew 10 percent over the 2012 numbers -- 5.5 vs. 5.0 in 18-49 and 18.51 million vs. 16.85 million. So that's good news. And that growth comes at a time when award shows are slipping in general. As Variety noted, "Over the past 12 months, the Oscars, Grammys, Primetime Emmys and Tonys have all been down vs. their prior telecast, with the Globes seeing smaller declines than the others. Just about the only top-tier awards show up is the Academy of Country Music Awards on CBS."

So Ricky and the 2016 Globes did OK, overall, but the Hollywood Foreign Press Association probably wouldn't turn down a call from Tina and Amy if they ever felt like returning.

'Money Monster' Trailer Takes George Clooney (and Wall Street) Hostage

Posted:

Director Jodie Foster's "Money Monster" is totally feelin' the Bern, giving an angry investor (Jack O'Connell) a chance to rail against Wall Street and the 1 percent by taking a financial show TV host hostage. George Clooney plays Lee Gates, "the wizard of Wall Street," who apparently gives crappy investment advice to the suckers who watch him on "Money Monster." Foster's thriller plays out in real-time as Lee and his producer, Patty Fenn (Julia Roberts), are taken hostage and have to try and stay alive while also uncovering the truth behind some big-money corruption.

Here's the first trailer:

It looks like a tense one. It could also, potentially, be a preachy one. But Wall Street angst is all the rage these days, and real-time thrillers/hostage situations tend to make for gripping drama. Just don't try this at home, angry people with guns!

"Money Monster" is scheduled for release on May 13, 2016.

'Homeland': Is Quinn Still Alive? The 'Question Remains' Into Season 6

Posted:

No one just dies anymore. Is that a good thing? Rupert Friend's Peter Quinn is a hugely popular character on "Homeland," but the Season 5 finale definitely hinted -- heavily -- to his death. He even had a powerful farewell letter to Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes).

But not so fast, 'cause Showtime executives just confused us further with comments that hint to Quinn's story perhaps continuing into Season 6.

At the Television Critics Association winter press event, Showtime President and CEO David Nevins said "Homeland" Season 6 will be both set and shot in New York City. TV Guide noted that neither Nevins nor Showtime President of Programming Gary Levine would confirm whether Quinn was dead or alive, but Levine offered this tease:

"In terms of reality, Quinn is severely damaged. There's no question about it. The life-or-death question remains, but if he should live, it will not be in any way shape or form the way he has lived to date."

He said "is" as if Quinn is not understood to be dead. Wouldn't he have been more clear-cut about it if Quinn were gone? Then again, do we want Quinn to be in a situation like Khal Drogo in "Game of Thrones," where he's technically alive but really just existing? If Quinn recovers more than that -- after suffering a serious brain hemorrhage -- would it be realistic or feel like a cheap trick just to keep him on the show? Does it matter to you, as long as Quinn is around? A lot of fans threatened to stop watching without Quinn, so maybe this is what the show needs to stay alive itself.

21 Best TV Shows Based on Comic Books, Ranked by Awesomeness

%Slideshow-325519%
Comic books are kind of a big deal.

No longer for just the neck-bearded crowd at Comic-Con, comics have become mainstream on both the big and small screen. Studios are constantly searching for intellectual property that can get them the next "Walking Dead." The genre has a very deep bench of hits and misses -- both animated and live-action -- and there are more shows based on comics on the air now than ever before.

In honor of "The Flash" star Grant Gustin's birthday this week, we've decided to rank and file the best TV series based on comic books -- ranked by story quality, rewatchability, and, you know, overall awesomeness.

2016 Razzies Nominations: It's a Four-Way Tie for the Worst

Posted:

Yes, it's that time of the year again! The day before Hollywood pats itself on the back with Oscar nominations, the Razzies show up to remind everyone why Hollywood deserves a few raspberries with the champagne.

Besides as Jean-Ralphio could tell you, there's nothing more fun than honoring the wooooorst:

This year, there's a four-way tie for the dubious honor of most Razzie Award nominations: "Fifty Shades of Grey," "Pixels," "Jupiter Ascending," and "Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2" got six nods. That, at least, is some small consolation for "Fantastic Four," which walked away with "only" five nominations. And "Pan," "Mortdecai," and "Human Centipede 3" were seriously let off the hook. (Hook -- get it? The worst!)

Here's an exciting note: Eddie Redmayne has a chance to win both an Oscar and a Razzie in the same year, since the reigning Best Actor winner will probably be nominated again for "The Danish Girl" and there he is below for "Jupiter Ascending." Way to cover all the bases, Redmayne!

Which film should "win" Worst Picture, in your opinion? Should we prepare another round of bad "Fifty Shades of ____" slams?

Best of Late Night TV: Kevin Hart's Gassy Drinko, Jimmy Kimmel's 'X-Files' Spoof, Betty White's 94th Birthday

Posted:

If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.

Kevin Hart is promoting the heck out of "Ride Along 2" and he was on "The Tonight Show" Tuesday night to play Drinko. Jimmy Fallon said Kevin specifically requested this game because 1) Jimmy isn't very good at Drinko, and 2) Kevin said, "If I lose what's the big deal, I get a chance to drink for free." However, the "drinks" included stuff like "Pea Soup," "Pickle Juice," and "Tang," and they had to drink a mix of two of them. Kevin first got "Mulled Wine" and he didn't even know what it was. When Jimmy said it had stuff like cinnamon sticks and herbs, Kevin warned him, "Well, I'll tell you off the bat -- cinnamon sticks give me gas, so you gotta deal with that on your own time." Haha. Kevin got very (mock) upset that "the black guy got Hennessy" and Jimmy kept getting juice. Jimmy really took one for the team there in the end, adding pea soup to his juices. Nasty.

The truth is out there -- "The X-Files" revival starts next week (January 24) on FOX. Jimmy Kimmel said it's one of his all-time favorite shows, and he got to sit with stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny to chat about Mulder and Scully's past and future. The stars talked about getting the roles and explained their '90s tension (blame "moist" Vancouver!). Plus, Duchovny named his least favorite monster. The last video includes a real clip from the new series.
Also, don't miss this "X-Files" clip with Mulder, Scully, and Jimmy Kimmel. Obviously it's just a bit, but the '90s references are classic. AOL dial-up for life! "Mulder, put the floppy down." And Jimmy speaks for all of us when he suggests Mulder and Scully just have sex. So they make out right there in front of him ... and the little alien guy.
Breaking news: This Sunday (January 17), the living legend that is Betty White turns 94! She is just as quick-witted and adorable as ever. Just watch her talk to James Corden about how she's going to spend her birthday. ("I'm going to celebrate with Robert Redford. He doesn't know that yet. And I think he's out of the country.") James also quizzed Reggie Watts and Amar'e Stoudemire on whether Betty White was born before or after certain things. For example, "The NBA -- did it exist when Betty was born in 1922?" How about New Mexico? Mickey Mouse? Watch and see. Young Jacob Tremblay of "Room" looked sharp on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" and talked about meeting "Star Wars" hero Oscar Isaac.
Over on "The Late Show," Saoirse Ronan tried to teach Stephen Colbert an Irish accent. He has Irish ancestors, so he's close.Eva Longoria talked to Seth Meyers about returning to TV, and the male divas she's worked with. She said the difference between daytime soaps and nighttime soaps is that during the day the men are the divas.

Steve Carell was on "Conan" and shared the story of how "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" almost didn't happen. Universal shut them down after just a few days of filming because they had been watching early footage -- just Carell riding around on his bike -- and told the star, "You look like a serial killer." The suits didn't think it looked like a comedy at all. Haha. Thankfully, they were able to keep shooting, and everything turned out well.
