The Last Horror Blog: 'JeruZalem' and 'The Blackout Experiments' Clips

Posted: 21 Jan 2016 10:00 PM PST

Del Toro has some Scary Stories To Tell in the Dark – If you grew up in the ‘80s and ‘90s, you’re probably familiar with Scary Stories To Tell in the Dark. The book series (penned by Alvin Schwartz, with unforgettable illustrations by Stephen Gammell) was a hit with kids and a controversy magnet for hyper-sensitive parents. That controversy could live again, as CBS has revealed plans to turn the books into a television series – which is awesome news made even more incredible by the announcement that Guillermo Del Toro is attached to the project. The Crimson Peak filmmaker will help develop the series and may direct as well. No word yet on what stories will be adapted, but this is still exciting news. Hopefully GDT can find time in his packed...

Director's Choice: The Top Five Movies That Influenced the New Time Travel Puzzler 'Synchronicity'

Posted: 21 Jan 2016 09:00 PM PST

Time travel is such a highly specific subgenre in sci-fi that a few big movies tend to always dominate the conversation. Primer, The Terminator and Back to the Future are the biggest fan favorites and so any time a new time travel movie comes out, those seem to crop back into the conversation as influencers. However, that's not entirely the case with Synchronicity, the new sci-fi mind bender from writer-director Jacob Gentry (The Signal). At least, not as far as Gentry is concerned. Synchronicity hits theaters and on demand tomorrow (that would be January 22, 2016, in case you're reading this from another timeline), so we asked Gentry to tell us what his actual influences were when writing and directing. His answers may actually surprise you, at least if you're...

Celebrate Groundhog Day by Watching 'Groundhog Day' In a Theater For 24 Hours Straight

Posted: 21 Jan 2016 07:15 PM PST

Remember when it was cool to marathon a movie franchise in the theater? Maybe you've endured a lengthy series of screenings of the Lord of the Rings or Marvel cinematic universe or Star Wars movies, back to back leading up to a new installment. Well, those and also events like the annual 24-hour Butt-Numb-A-Thon in Austin (and heck, let's include that three-day Shia LaBeouf stunt in New York) are easy peezy compared to the new challenge: all day and all night marathons of the same movie over and over and over.  Forget watching seven or 11 different titles in succession. Just you try to watch Groundhog Day on repeat for 24 hours. That's 12 showings of the classic time loop comedy, in which Bill Murray plays a weatherman repeating the same day over and over. The...

Tom Cruise Officially Joins 'The Mummy' as It Gets a New Release Date

Posted: 21 Jan 2016 05:45 PM PST

Last December reports started emerging that Tom Cruise was circling the lead role in Universal's big reboot of The Mummy, only there was no official confirmation. Some reports said it was a total rumor, others said there was truth to it but that it was far from a done deal. Whatever the case was a month ago it has now become official: Tom Cruise will indeed star in The Mummy. Now that the paperwork is done to land the Mission: Impossible star a potential new franchise, The Mummy has also landed a new date. It was originally set for a March 24, 2017 release, but now it's moved out a few months to make the Cruise deal possible and will instead open on June 9, 2017.  So here's what we know so far.   Who's directing it? Alex Kurtzman will be calling...

'Keanu' Red-Band Trailer: Key and Peele Put the Cutest Cat Ever Into an Action Movie

Posted: 21 Jan 2016 03:45 PM PST

Keanu Reeves staged an action movie comeback of sorts when he starred in John Wick, a movie about a man who goes on a revenge rampage through a criminal underworld after his dog is killed by a gangster. As far as we know the actor has nothing to do with the movie that brings us here today, but it's probably not a coincidence that it's a comedy about two guys who penetrate the criminal underworld after someone steals their pet cat who happens to be named Keanu. Keanu stars Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele and is directed by their Key & Peele producer-director Peter Atencio. You're probably on board based on those names and that description alone, but if you're not, the supporting cast should do the trick. It includes Will Forte, Luis Huzman, Rob...

Luke Skywalker's 'Star Wars' Blaster Goes on Sale

Posted: 21 Jan 2016 01:30 PM PST

Luke Skywalker's lightsaber plays a key role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but that's not the only weapon that he wielded in the original trilogy. Even though it was derided as "clumsy or random" by Obi Wan-Kenobi, Luke's blaster pistol proved to be very handy when he needed to stealthily search for his buddy Han Solo in Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back. Now you can own Luke's blaster pistol, as long as you have $300,000 to spare. As Daily Express reported, that's the expected selling price for the item, which is up for sale via auction in Los Angeles. The seller, Nate D. Sanders, says the blaster pistol was gifted by Mark Hamill to a young boy in the U.K. after the two filmed a scene for the British children's television show...

Your Guide to Sundance 2016 Horror Movies

Posted: 20 Jan 2016 09:00 PM PST

Horror fans are often unfairly characterized as having narrow tastes, but the truth is that it takes a a fair amount of research and a broad perspective to discover unique terrors on-screen. Take, for example, the Sundance Film Festival, which opens this week in Utah. While the festival is primarily known as a showcase for new American independent features, it's also served to boost the prospects of select horror movies. Perhaps because there are relatively few horror titles in the program each year, the good ones tend to get a disproportionate amount of attention, stretching back to The Blair Witch Project (Sundance 1999) and Saw (Sundance 2004). The last couple of years has seen a glut of good movies benefiting from a Sundance boost, including A Girl Walks Home Alone at...
