Today in Movie Culture: 'Ride Along 3' Trailer, Alan Rickman Memorials and More

Posted: 15 Jan 2016 09:30 PM PST

Here are a bunch of little bites to satisfy your hunger for movie culture:   Mashup of the Day: Kevin Hart and Woody Harrelson are unlikely partners in this NSFW Funny or Die mashup of Ride Along and True Detective imagining a Ride Along 3:   Political Fan Art of the Day: Donald Trump is a Sith Lord and Bernie Sanders is a Jedi Knight in this obviously pro-Democrat painting inspired by Star Wars: The Force Awakens (via Hilton Collins):   Historically Inspired Fan Art of the Day: Darth Vader's costume was inspired by Japanese history, so it makes sense to now imagine a samurai version of Kylo Ren. See other characters drawn by Nikolas A. Draper for a "Feudal Star Wars" series on his Tumblr.   Cosplay of the...

How to Manage Hype for '10 Cloverfield Lane'

Posted: 15 Jan 2016 08:00 PM PST

The Internet blew apart last night when people at early showings of 13 Hours reported seeing a trailer for a totally unknown movie called 10 Cloverfield Lane. It didn't take long for the official trailer for the film to hit online, and at that point the hype train had been outfitted with special hype rocket thrusters and it was pulling out of the hype station on an express route to Planet Hype. This is both an amazing thing and a recipe for disaster. On the one hand, it's incredible that a movie can release a trailer in this day and age and take fandom by genuine surprise. The ingredients for that to happen are pretty much unobtainable these days and it seems like the only person who still has a stash of them stored away is J.J. Abrams. So let's all appreciate...

Whoa, Is Maz Kanata From 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Also in 'The Phantom Menace'?

Posted: 15 Jan 2016 06:00 PM PST

There are those fans who hate the Star Wars prequels and those who love them -- or at least will defend them to a degree. And so there are fans who see Star Wars: The Force Awakens as retribution for the previous three live-action installments, almost to the point of dismissing them, and then also fans looking for ways the new movie forgives The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith by making subtle references to them, thereby giving them new relevance.  The latter group will rejoice at the latest finding, a retroactive Easter egg in The Phantom Menace that links to a seemingly altogether new character in The Force Awakens. Cinema Blend points out a small statue in little Anakin Skywalker's home on Tatooine resembling the wise smuggler Maz Kanata...

Comics on Film: Who We'd Like to See as Villains in ALL of DC's Upcoming Movies

Posted: 15 Jan 2016 04:36 PM PST

In just over two months' time, Warner Bros. will be releasing Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and will make their first concerted effort to bring the vibrant world of DC Comics to life on the silver screen. In addition to some of DC's most enduring icons making some kind of appearance in the film (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg, Lex Luthor, and General Zod just to name a few), we'll also be meeting a new incarnation of Doomsday. Rumors now persist about another surprise addition to the cast of villains, but I don't want to get into potential spoilers here. Then in August, Warner Bros. will be releasing a supervillain-centric film called Suicide Squad. It will feature several other DC Comics characters from a variety of different...

See How They Shot One of the Craziest Scenes in 'The Revenant'

Posted: 15 Jan 2016 03:00 PM PST

As The Revenant heads into its first weekend in theaters after scoring a leading 12 Oscar nominations, there's a lot of curiosity around how director Alejandro González Iñárritu and his team filmed some of the movie's more daring sequences. First there's the incredible bear attack, which Iñárritu is still trying to keep secret, though we know it was pulled off with a combination of camera tricks and star Leonardo DiCaprio rigged up to a pulley system. And in this new video via the New York Times' Anatomy of a Scene, we listen in as Iñárritu narrates another of the film's more difficult sequences involving DiCaprio's Hugh Glass' attempt to escape from the brutal Arikara tribe in frigid...

Movie News: Guillermo del Toro Will Tell More 'Scary Stories'; 'Alien: Covenant' Aiming for "Hard R" Rating

Posted: 15 Jan 2016 01:30 PM PST

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark: Guillermo del Toro will develop Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, with an eye toward directing the movie. As we noted in November 2014, John August has written the screen adaptation, based on a popular trilogy of books by Alvin Schwartz that featured illustrations by Stephen Gammell. The filmmaker was recently attached to direct a remake of Fantastic Voyage, so it's not clear when this one might be made. [Deadline]   Alien: Covenant: Director Ridley Scott is preparing to shoot Alien: Convenant, the next installment in the sci-fi series, and made his intentions clear about the adult tone of the movie he'll be making. "I’m going to do pretty hard R, pretty tough," he said. Referring to the infamous kitchen scene...

Surprise! J.J. Abrams Made a 'Cloverfield' Spin-off and Here's the Trailer

Posted: 15 Jan 2016 12:00 PM PST

J.J. Abrams is known for his "mystery box" theory, which sprang from the way that his grandfather shared new ideas with him, opening up radios and other devices to show him how they worked. He expounded on the theory in a TED talk that he gave in March 2007, which you can watch below. (By the way, it includes a brief discussion of the "mystery boxes" in Star Wars.)   Abrams put the theory to good use that very year during the production of Cloverfield, which kept its premise and plot details in hiding. The movie's found-footage perspective of a giant monster attacking New York City proved to be quite successful. Now Abrams and his team have done it again, with a followup that comes as (almost) a complete surprise. Here's the first trailer for...
