Posted: 22 Jan 2016 10:00 PM PST

Here are a bunch of little bites to satisfy your hunger for movie culture:   Recut Movie of the Day: Now that The Martian has been deemed the best comedy of last year by the Golden Globes, a laugh track has been added to the movie:   Promotional Stunt of the Day: A company in Abu Dhabi allowed its building to be transformed into a replica of Starkiller Base to promote Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but that also kinda makes the company look evil (via io9):   Mashup of the Day: Artist Brian Kesinger has mashed Star Wars and Calvin and Hobbes before, but now he's back with Kylo Ren perfectly taking over the Calvin role in the below comic strip parody. The Academy Announces New Rules to Diversify the Oscars

Posted: 22 Jan 2016 08:30 PM PST

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has gotten a lot of heat since this year's Oscar nominees were announced and not a single person of color received an acting nomination. The hashtag campaign #OscarsSoWhite made national news shows and even became a punchline on the front page of the New York Post. And now, just barely a week after the nominees were announced, the Academy has unveiled some new rules for its membership that should really help diversify its voting base in the years to come. Variety has a full breakdown of the new rules, but here are the most important ones: 1. Each member will only have voting status for ten years. The member will have to be active within the industry during those ten years in order to have their voting status renewed for...

Another New 'Allegiant' Trailer Lets Out the Funky Sci-Fi Side of 'Divergent'

Posted: 22 Jan 2016 07:00 PM PST

Update: Another trailer for The Divergent Series: Allegiant has hit online and it's even weirder, and weirdly more appealing, than the last one that piqued our interest. Check it out at the bottom of this post.   Previously: So far The Divergent Series has had a bit of a problem breaking out beyond its pre-existing fanbase. Sure, it's been a modest success for Lionsgate (they'd have stopped making sequels if it wasn't), but it hasn't really made a dent in pop culture the way other young adult movies have. Part of the problem is that the world of Divergent looks like a generic version of The Hunger Games. All the buildings are crumbly and most everyone mopes around sad about their place in life. There's an elite class whose motives are suspect and...

Comics on Film: Breaking Down the DC Movies TV Special

Posted: 22 Jan 2016 05:30 PM PST

If you consider yourself to be a fan of superhero movies, then this was likely a pretty big week for you. On Tuesday night, Warner Bros. Pictures used DC Comics Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns and comics fan and filmmaker Kevin Smith to lay out the vision for an entire universe of comic book movies they’ll be releasing over the next several years: something Johns has called the “Justice League Universe.” While a fair amount of the program focused on the impending first release under this initiative – Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, in case you somehow forgot – we were also given some surprisingly in-depth looks at some of the other releases coming down the pike. While the program itself likely got a little too “salesy” at...

McG is in Talks to Direct the He-Man Reboot

Posted: 22 Jan 2016 04:00 PM PST

We don't really need a new He-Man movie, not when they made a perfectly good one in the 1980s. Of course I'm referring to Beastmaster, which isn't technically a He-Man movie but sure looks like one in many ways. Unfortunately, most people think of the official He-Man movie, Masters of the Universe, which is embarrassingly bad. For them, a new adaptation of the popular toys and cartoon series could serve as redemption. Or at least finally give them a depiction of Orko on the big screen. For a while, it seemed like we'd never actually get one either, as a new He-Man movie has been in development for years and at different studios. There has been talk of directors as varied as John Woo, Jon M. Chu, John Stevenson and Jeff Wadlow being attached to helm the...

New 'X-Men: Apocalypse' Images Unleash the Four Horsemen

Posted: 22 Jan 2016 01:30 PM PST

In the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse, the primary villain will be the titular Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac), an immortal mutant who recruits four mutants to serve as his personal guard, known as the "Four Horsemen." We've known for a while that those roles will be filled by Psylocke (Olivia Munn), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Angel/Archangel (Ben Hardy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender). In a newly-published interview at ScreenRant, director Bryan Singer explained that the so-called "Four Horsemen" would be somewhat different than how they've traditionally been portrayed in the Marvel comic books. For one thing, instead of being renamed as War, Death, Famine and Pestilence, with powers to match, the movie will keep their original character names. For another...

Doctor Strange: Benedict Wong, who portrayed the director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Ridley Scott's The Martian, will join the cast of Marvel's Doctor Strange, now in production. He will play a character named Wong, described as a multitalented sidekick to the good doctor (Benedict Cumberbatch). Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Mads Mikkelsen also star; the movie is heading for release on November 4. [THR]   Avatar 2: Reportedly, James Cameron's Avatar 2 will not be ready in time for its planned release on December 25, 2017. The movie, the first in a trilogy of sequels, was originally pencilled in for December 2016. It's not known when production might begin on the trio of movies, which will be shot at the same time in New...
