What Is Your Most Anticipated Movie from the 2015 Sundance Film Festival?

Posted: 29 Jan 2015 11:00 PM PST

We've still got a few more days left until the end of this year's Sundance Film Festival, and so we don't know what the jury or audience favorites of the event are. Maybe we need to wait for them to be announced to determine what our most anticipated selection should be, because unlike the 2014 fest, which gave us an immediate and unbeatable crowd pleaser in Whiplash (now a Best Picture Oscar nominee), this time there doesn't seem to be an unmistakable certainty for best of fest yet. That isn't to say anything of the quality of the program. In fact, it's probably more so a reflection on how great the movies have been overall. There is no difficulty finding options for the winner of Sundance '15. There may instead be difficulty paring down from so many...

The Last Sci-fi Blog: 'Interstellar,' 'Fantastic Four' and the Science Fiction-ing of Superhero Movies

Posted: 29 Jan 2015 09:30 PM PST

When the first trailer for Josh Trank's Fantastic Four reboot arrived earlier this week, everyone noted that the footage was cut awfully similar to the marketing for Christopher Nolan's Interstellar. Since this is the Internet, it took someone less than 24 hours to splice together Matthew McConaughey's voice with Reg E. Cathey's narration and the results were uncanny. The trailer played exactly the same, beat for beat. This can't be an accident. The marketing folks at 20th Century Fox didn't utilize beautiful shots of cornfields, traditional images of Americana and astronauts suiting up for a dangerous mission by accident. And then there's Cathey's narration, which sounds like something out of The Right Stuff, not a superhero movie. The lack of...

Posted: 29 Jan 2015 08:30 PM PST

Helicarrier play set, which comes with mini-figs for Captain America, Black Widow, Iron Man, Nick Fury and Maria Hill (via Live for Film):   Learn about the geometry involved in the films of Akira Kurosawa via the underrated The Bad Sleep Well and a brief video essay by Tony Zhou (via Devour):   Learn why the Lord of the Rings trilogy is so much more satisfying than the Hobbit trilogy, via this video essay by Sean Hickey (via Filmmaker IQ):     Now we just need some little purple costumes to put on the birds who frequent this The Grand Budapest Hotel...

This Film Just Broke Zach Braff's Box Office Record for a Crowdfunded Movie

Posted: 29 Jan 2015 07:00 PM PST

What's better, raising the most money on a crowdfunding site or earning the most money at the box office? The latter has always been more newsworthy, if we consider the funding part the same as any movie budget raised ahead of production. But being a box office success is a particular achievement for a crowdfunded project, because it shows that the movie doesn't just sound like a good idea, but it followed through and in fact is a good movie that people are talking about and that more and more people want to see on the big screen. Dear White People, a race-based satire about black students at an ivy league university, only raised $41,405 when it campaigned through Indiegogo back in 2012. That was pretty great considering the movie's goal was only $25,000...

Watch: The Sundance Film Festival Movies You Should Put on Your Radar

Posted: 29 Jan 2015 05:47 PM PST

Sometimes it's hard to look at a list of unfamiliar film festival movies and pick out the ones to put on your must-watch list for when they arrive in theaters at a later date. While attending this year's Sundance Film Festival, I sat down with AMC Independent's Amirose Eisenbach and Alicia Malone to discuss a whole bunch of the movies we watched over the course of a few days up in the mountains of Park City, Utah. We had a great conversation and covered a lot of movies, so give it a watch below.   Some of the films mentioned include.... Dope Sleeping with Other People Me and Earl and the Dying Girl Wild Tales The End of the Tour The D Train Strangerland Knock Knock Going Clear Z for Zachariah The Bronze What Happened, Miss Simone...

Watch: Your Favorite Dirty Teddy Bear Returns in First Official 'Ted 2' Trailer

Posted: 29 Jan 2015 03:56 PM PST

The most hilariously dirty, foul-mouthed and perverted movie character in recent years returns to theaters this summer for another big-screen comedic adventure... and did we mention he's a teddy bear? Yes, that lovable and huggable loudmouth is back alongside his best buddy John (Mark Wahlberg) in Ted 2, due out June 28, and the first official trailer for the film has just dropped. Check it out. This time around it looks like Ted is getting married and wants to have a baby, except he's running into trouble achieving life's goals because he's not a real human... he's a teddy bear. Thus kicks off what looks to be another R-rated riot full of all kinds of absurd debauchery, only this time stars like Morgan Freeman, Amanda Seyfried and Liam Neeson are joining...

Disney Princesses Meet Horror Icons in These Awesome Mash-ups

Posted: 29 Jan 2015 03:00 PM PST

Disney villains may be the stuff of nightmares for really small children, but imagine if the heroes and heroines of animated classics went up against really terrifying characters. That's precisely what artist José Rodolfo Loaiza Ontiveros has done with his latest set of parodies, which pit Disney princesses and other favorites from the Mouse House brand against horror film icons and at least two baddies from Batman movies. Most of these are really perfect, such as the above image of Freddy Krueger and Princess Aurora, hinting that the leading lady of Sleeping Beauty might not get to ever wake up, even with a kiss from her prince. Then there's the obvious combo of Little Mermaid's Ariel and the Creature from the Black Lagoon. We're not sure...
