Today in Movie Culture: Batman, 'Aliens,' 'Labyrinth,' 'Frozen,' 'Jupiter Ascending' and More

Posted: 28 Jan 2015 11:00 PM PST

Here are a bunch of little bites to satisfy your hunger for movie culture:   A hip school principal in Rhode Island announed to his students they had a snow day this week with a tribute to Frozen (via The Hollywood Reporter):    A hip dad not only made these custom Labyrinth dolls for his daughter, in box, but he's shared instructions on how to make them for your own kid -- or yourself (via Topless Robot):   This all-neon version of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer has me realizing that I'd love to watch a Star Wars laser show at the local planetarium (via Geek Tyrant):   Today is the 57th anniversary of Lego's patent for its iconic bricks. In honor of the occasion, watch this animated...

7 Movies Where Young, Crazy People Almost Destroyed the World

Posted: 28 Jan 2015 10:00 PM PST

In Project Almanac, a group of teenagers happen upon a time machine and abuse their newfound abilities to journey across the time-stream to have a good time and make some money. Then things start to go horribly wrong. Sure, most movies that focus on young people deal with down-to-earth problems like homework and school and parents who just don't understand. But others place the fate of the entire planet in the hands of people who aren't even old enough to drink alcohol. A lot of movies feature young heroes going on amazing journeys and learning valuable life lessons, but a precious few feature people too young to know better accidentally (or deliberately) destroying the world. Let's go over a few of them, shall we?   WarGames Modern kids, with their...

The Geek Beat: Why a Unified Marvel Movie-verse Might Not Be the Best Idea

Posted: 28 Jan 2015 08:30 PM PST

We're less than a month into the new year, and there's already been a lot of talk about the possibility of characters like Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four and various other Marvel Comics superheroes finding their way to the same screen as the Avengers in Marvel Studios' cinematic universe. While most fans are salivating at the idea of uniting Marvel's estranged big-screen properties under the same banner, I can't shake the feeling that a unified Marvel movie-verse could be (to borrow a term from Marvel's distinguished competition) a crisis in the making. At this point, the credible threats to Marvel Studios' dominance at the box office are dwindling. It's at times like this, though, that a company – or a cinematic universe, in this case...

Brad Pitt to Star in Angelina Jolie's Next Movie - Here's What We Know

Posted: 28 Jan 2015 07:00 PM PST

According to The Wrap, Brad Pitt is gearing up to be the main man in Angelina Jolie's next movie, Africa. Actually, he's already the leading man in her next movie -- the recently filmed By the Sea (pictured above) -- so technically this is her next, next movie.  Africa is based on the real life of Richard Leakey, a Kenyan man of many hats who became a key figure in preserving his nation's history and future. He led several high-profile expeditions to recover key historical artifacts, and he even became the driving force behind a controversial, but effective, antipoacher movement wherein he hired people to shoot any elephant poachers on sight. It's this last part that appears to be the focus of the movie, as this is how Jolie described the project when it...

Kevin Spacey to Star in a Movie About a Man Trapped in a Cat's Body

Posted: 28 Jan 2015 05:50 PM PST

Everyone loves Kevin Spacey. He's one of those rare actors who is not only incredible on-screen, in every single role, but is exceedingly likeable and normal off camera as well. Combine the two and you've got this persona that Kevin Spacey is kind of just the Man. Well, now the Man is playing a man who gets trapped in the body of a cat.  Yes, this is a real movie. It's called Nine Lives and it comes from director Barry Sonnenfeld (Men in Black) and the eccentric European studio EuropaCorp (Lucy). The Wrap explains that the Oscar-winning Spacey will be playing a "a workaholic businessman who suffers a terrible accident that leaves him trapped in the body of the family cat." But unfortunately there's not much clarification beyond that. How...

The Nextflix 'Wet Hot American Summer' Sequel Trailer Teases the Ridiculous Cast

Posted: 28 Jan 2015 04:20 PM PST

Update: Hop to the bottom of this post for the first teaser trailer for the new Wet Hot American Summer. Previously: There's long been talk of a Wet Hot American Summer sequel (or prequel), as is normal for cult comedies that didn't do well at the box office but later found die-hard fans in the years following their release. Zoolander is another that's been discussed from the same year, although the original was at least a sizable hit if not the phenomenal success it's become since. For a while, it seemed like the best chance these movies had for follow-ups was by crowd-funding on Kickstarter to prove the interest was there. But it looks like all we had to do was just wait. Paramount recently moved forward with Zoolander 2, and now Netflix...

You Have No Idea How Good 'Batkid Begins' Will Make You Feel

Posted: 28 Jan 2015 03:00 PM PST

Back in 2007, a documentary called Dear Zachary premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival. Directed by Kurt Kuenne, the film tracked the sickening story of a doomed romance Kurt's best friend Andrew had found himself in, and how things quickly spiraled out of control to the point where multiple people -- including Andrew and the son he never got to meet -- wound up dead. I was at the premiere of this film in 2007, unaware of its story, and that screening will forever go down as one of the most emotionally devastating of my life. I'm talking tears, sobbing and having to sit alongside Andrew's friends and family through all of it was an experience I value as a fan of movies, but one I really don't want to go through again.  Eight years later in the very same...

Release-Date Shuffle: 'Friday the 13th,' 'The Ring' and 'Paranormal Activity' Sequels All Move Around

Posted: 28 Jan 2015 01:50 PM PST

Earlier this week Paramount changed the date on Mission: Impossible 5, pulling it out of a Christmas bow and releasing it five months sooner. As we mentioned in our post about it, this was a bit of a shocker because studios rarely release major, major movies early, yet alone by nearly half a year. It's not unprecedented, it's just rare. The release-date shuffle for smaller movies, however, is far more common. That's why it's not remotely surprising Paramount is also playing musical chairs with three of its marquee horror movies. Here are the new dates: Friday the 13th Old Date: November 13, 2015 New Date: May 13, 2016 Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension Old Date: March 13, 2015 New Date: October 23, 2015. Rings Old Date: Undated New Date...

Posted: 28 Jan 2015 12:00 PM PST

ID Forever: Reportedly, Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay -- Part 1) has been offered the lead role in ID Forever, the sequel to Independence Day. Director Roland Emmerich will helm the project, with Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman also expected to return. [The Wrap]   The Lazarus Effect: New photos from The Lazarus Effect reveal an angry-looking Olivia Wilde confronting Donald Glover (above), as well as Mark Duplass and Sarah Bolger (below), apparently hiding from her too. All four are medical researchers, experimenting with bringing the dead back to life; things do not go well, as might be expected. The movie will rise in theaters on February 27. [Coming Soon]   Stephanie: Frank Grillo (The Purge: Anarchy, Captain America: The Winter Soldier...
