New on DVD/Blu-ray: 'Gone Girl' and 'A Walk Among the Tombstones' Lead a Great Week for Adult Movies

Posted: 13 Jan 2015 09:45 PM PST

A Walk Among the Tombstones - Universal Studios - Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD Director: Scott Frank Cast: Liam Neeson, Dan Stevens, David Harbour, Patrick F. McDade, Laura Birn. Full cast + crew This is a banner week for smart movies made for adult audiences. Obviously Gone Girl is the biggest name of the bunch, but don't let its box office status let you overlook A Walk Among the Tombstones, the newest movie from The Lookout writer and director Scott Frank. The cover may make this look like a Taken spin-off, but it's a gripping, artful, restrained pot boiler about a former cop turned unlicensed detective who gets caught up investigating the kidnap and murder of a mobster's wife. Neeson is great in it, and better yet, he's...

Watch: Martin Scorsese Teams with Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Brad Pitt on New Short Film

Posted: 13 Jan 2015 08:30 PM PST

In a year that's sure to be stuffed with all kinds of really cool short films, it'll be hard for any of them to top what Martin Scorsese is working on. The director, known for stepping behind the camera for various short films and commercials in between filming his features (his last featured Matthew McConaughey and Scarlett Johansson), has one-upped himself by tackling a new short that's touting the opening of two casinos in Manila. And, well, this is a guy who knows a thing or two about casinos... But what's so special about this particular Scorsese short is that it stars Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt. Scorsese has worked with De Niro eight times during his career and DiCaprio five times, but neither have appeared together in the same...

David Fincher, Ben Affleck and 'Gone Girl' Writer Gillian Flynn Are Remaking a Hitchcock Classic Next

Posted: 13 Jan 2015 05:34 PM PST

Strangers on a Train, written by Patricia Highsmith, has a brilliantly simple premise. Two total strangers -- Guy, a famous tennis player, and Bruno, the son of a wealthy businessman -- exchange grievances on a train, where one of them proposes that the solution to both of their problems lies in murder. Bruno will kill Guy's wife if Guy agrees to kill Bruno's old man. Since they're total strangers with no conceivable motives connecting them to the victims, the police can never pin the crime on them, making it a perfect plan. Until nothing goes to plan, that is. Alfred Hitchcock directed a famous adaptation of it back in 1951, and since then the same plot has been used all over the place, from big-name movies like Throw Momma from the Train to even a...

This Exclusive 'John Wick' Clip Explains the Most Important Part of an Action Movie

Posted: 13 Jan 2015 04:40 PM PST

John Wick was the best American action movie of 2014. If you don't agree, one of two things has happened. Either you didn't see John Wick, or you didn't see John Wick. Thankfully you can fix this grave mistake starting today, as the movie hits Digital HD (iTunes, Amazon, Vudu and so on) a few weeks ahead of its Blu-ray and DVD debut.  Keanu Reeves stars as the titular John Wick, a former assassin who is living a peaceful life until one day some dumb thugs decide to break into his house, steal his car and kill the puppy his recently deceased wife had given him before passing away. So he does the logical thing and declares an all-out war on the lead thug, who happens to be the son of one of Reeves' former mob bosses. Naturally, this boss doesn't want to see...

Woody Allen Is Writing and Directing a TV Series for Amazon

Posted: 13 Jan 2015 03:50 PM PST

Sixty years ago, long before he started making movies, Woody Allen moved to Hollywood to write for television. Over the next decade, he worked on such programs as The Colgate Comedy Hour and The Sid Caesar Show. Now, after all his time as one of the most recognized and prolific American auteurs in cinema, he's returning to the small screen. It's a very different medium, though, then when Allen was starting out, and the outlet for his new project is a prime example (no pun intended). Amazon Studios has snatched the filmmaker to develop a series for the online retailer's growing -- and now award-winning -- original-content division. And he's set to write and direct every episode of its first season.  This series is due next year, for streaming on...

You'll Love This: Watch Matthew McConaughey's 'Dazed and Confused' Audition Tape

Posted: 13 Jan 2015 02:20 PM PST

"I sat down and started doing a little Wooderson and [Rick Linklater] said, 'Wait, you're not this guy.' And I said, 'No, but I know who this guy is.'" That's how Matthew McConaughey describes his audition process for Dazed and Confused, which he was brand new to at the time. But it was the relaxed nature of director Richard Linklater that allowed McConaughey to slip into his memorable character -- an older guy who's still hanging around the high school kids because he can't shake loose the fact that he's not one of them anymore. We've heard McConaughey tell variations of his audition story before, but we've never seen the actual audition. Well, now we have it. Watch as McConaughey becomes Wooderson for the first time...

Watch: Melissa McCarthy Reunites with 'Bridesmaids' Director for 'Spy'

Posted: 13 Jan 2015 01:15 PM PST

The first trailer for Spy has arrived, and it shows off a bit of a Bridesmaids reunion. You have director Paul Feig once again behind the camera with Bridesmaids stars Melissa McCarthy and Rose Byrne starring in what looks like a pretty funny spin on the whole action-packed spy movie. In the film, McCarthy stars as some no-confidence, low-level CIA agent who's trapped behind a desk and never ever sees any action. But when all of the badass spies (Jason Statham and Jude Law included among them) have their identities compromised, McCarthy is the only one left who can go undercover and save the day. Check out the first trailer below. Here's the SFW version:   And here's the R-rated NSFW version:   Like he did with Bridesmaids and especially...
