Comics on Film: How Hollywood Can Evolve the Shared Movie Universe Posted: 19 Mar 2015 10:00 PM PDT When you wind the clocks back to 2008 and your first time watching Iron Man in theaters, the post-credits scene was something of a revelation. Audiences had not yet been exposed to a widespread shared universe on the scale of what had been seen in comic books, and Nick Fury's appearance and foreboding statement to Tony Stark was engaging, exciting, and full of possibilities. Now, nearly seven years later, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a concept of unparalleled success. By serving as a launch pad for several different films and types of films, several of Marvel Studios' movies have become some of the biggest box office hits of the day. With franchises like Iron Man, The Avengers, and Guardians of the Galaxy under their belt, there has yet... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
The Last Horror Blog: Our Favorite Werewolf Movies, From 'Ginger Snaps' to 'Wolfcop' Posted: 19 Mar 2015 08:30 PM PDT Wolfcop, the highly entertaining new horror comedy from filmmaker Lowell Dean, has just slashed its way on to DVD – so I figured this was the perfect time to highlight some of the other great lycanthrope films out there. If you’re ready to bark at the moon, or just like finding opportunities to drop the word “lycanthropy” into casual conversation, then these films are guaranteed to please. Silver Bullet Corey Haim and Gary Busey headline this 1985 feature, which was based on a Stephen King novella titled Cycle of the Werewolf. The small town of Tarker’s Mills has a murderer walking amongst them in King’s tale, but the killer isn’t a man – it’s a vicious werewolf with a taste for people. Haim plays a paraplegic... Update: Joseph Gordon-Levitt to Star in a 'Fraggle Rock' Movie Posted: 19 Mar 2015 07:30 PM PDT Movies Chat is our new work-in-progress chat show hosted by Movies.com Managing Editor Erik Davis. Each month we'll release multiple episodes that feature 15-20 minute conversations with some of the web's most notable movie experts. Update: 3/19/2015: It's been nearly three years since we've heard any worthwhile news about a Fraggle Rock movie, but now we've got something big to report: Joseph Gordon-Levitt will produce and star in the movie. Here's what he had to tell Variety about the project: “Jim Henson’s characters make you laugh and sing, but they’re also layered, surprising, and wise. From Oscar the Grouch, to Yoda, to the Fraggles. I’ve never stopped loving his work, even as a young frisky man, and on into adulthood... 'Selma' and 'Friday' are Returning to Theaters Posted: 19 Mar 2015 06:00 PM PDT What do Selma and Friday have in common? Both are heading back to theaters for special occasions. For the former, the recent Best Picture nominee is getting a quick re-release this weekend for the 50th anniversary of historical events seen in the movie. March 21, 1965 is the date Martin Luther King Jr. led the third and complete attempt to march from Selma to Montgomery in support of voting rights. As depicted at the climax of Selma, three days later thousands of protestors descended upon the Alabama capital. That summer, the Voting Rights Act passed through Congress and was signed into law by President Johnson. The re-release is not an excuse for Paramount Pictures to milk some extra money from the anniversary. In fact, tickets for the movie are being offered at a two-for-one... 'Mad Max: Fury Road' Earns an R Rating for All the Right Reasons Posted: 19 Mar 2015 03:40 PM PDT We usually don't cover movie ratings, because what the MPAA thinks of a movie isn't often very surprising or news worthy. But when it comes to Mad Max: Fury Road, our most anticipated movie of the summer, we've been waiting with bated breath to find out if Warner Bros. was going to let director George Miller run truly wild or if they were going to restrain him to make it more accessible to young teenagers. Well, wonder no more. The MPAA has now seen Fury Road, and they've given it the fan's much-coveted R. And they've done it for seemingly all the right reasons, as the movie has "intense sequences of violence throughout, and for disturbing images." Fury Road getting an R-rating isn't just a relief because it means we're not getting a... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Movie News: Spielberg/Hanks Spy Thriller Gets Title; Watch a Jolting 'Poltergeist' TV Spot Posted: 19 Mar 2015 12:00 PM PDT Bridge of Spies: Tom Hanks and director Steven Spielberg are teaming on a Cold War thriller that now has a new title, Bridge of Spies. Set in 1962, the movie tells the true-life story of an American spy plane pilot who was shot down over Russia. As depicted in the first official photo above, Hanks plays a lawyer who negotiates the pilot's release. Longtime Spielberg collaborator John Williams will not be composing the musical score, though, due to a health issue, and so Thomas Newman will fill that role. The movie opens in theaters on October 16. [Dreamworks] Little Women: Sarah Polley, Academy Award-nominated for her Away From Her script, will adapt Louisa May Alcott's classic novel Little Women for the big screen. The actress turned filmmaker will focus on... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
