Here are a bunch of little bites to satisfy your hunger for movie culture:   See a side-by-side comparison between the 1950 animated Cinderella and the new live-action remake based on the latter's trailer:   Cosmopolitan reimagined the women of Sex and the City as Disney princesses. Marvel Studios Countdown: Meet the Twins From 'Avengers: Age of Ultron'

Posted: 16 Mar 2015 09:00 PM PDT

We may have met “the twins” in Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s post-credits bit, but we won’t find out how they fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe until Avengers: Age of Ultron, which is approaching, well, as fast as Quicksilver. Yes, he’s the showstopper from X-Men: Days of Future Past, but don’t get confused - the Quicksilver in the Avengers sequel is a completely different take bearing the same name (just like how multiple actors have played Superman, but not the same version of Superman). We’ll also get Scarlet Witch, an Avengers mainstay who has been the centerpiece of some of the biggest comic book storylines of all time.   Who created the twins and when was their first appearance? Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created...

Why 'The Look of Silence' and 'The Nightmare' Are More Terrifying Than Most Horror Movies

Posted: 16 Mar 2015 07:00 PM PDT

Here's the thing about horror movies -- even the scariest of them have that disconnect from reality. A distressing moment or a jolt can be easily dismissed. It's not real. No, that invincible, machete-wielding mad man isn't actually going to kill you. No, your loved one isn't going to transform into a mutant and try to rip your face off. By their very nature, genre movies put up a wall, with even the most gruesome of them constantly reminding you that it's only a movie. But the real world? The real world is terrifying. And two new documentaries playing at this year's SXSW Film Festival prove that the non-fiction format is capable of getting under your skin in ways that fictional movies can't even dream of. Although they're linked by genre, The...

Early Review: 'Furious 7' Brings the Insanity and The Emotion

Posted: 16 Mar 2015 03:22 PM PDT

Yes, they pulled it off. Furious 7 is the absurd, and absurdly entertaining, action movie you want it to be. And the way it handles and honors the tragic loss of star Paul Walker, both the on-screen character and the off-screen man, is just perfect. Nothing about Furious 7 made it an easy project. The obstacles were stacked against it from the second Fast 6 ended. Not only is it a sequel, but it's the sixth sequel in an action movie franchise that doesn't have decades of comic book storylines and characters to draw from. And as if keeping the franchise exciting and fresh after everything that's come before it wasn't enough, the movie that did come before it happened to be a perfect piece of blockbuster action that was going to be an impossible task to...

Movie News: Kevin Smith Confirms 'Mallrats 2'; Alexandre Desplat Scoring New 'Star Wars'

Posted: 16 Mar 2015 01:00 PM PDT

Mallrats 2: Following his hint in a tweet last week about "smelling a rat" in the future, Kevin Smith confirmed to a Tucson radio station that he's halfway finished on a script for a Mallrats sequel. "Nobody’s clamoring for a Mallrats sequel," he admitted, "but I would love to make one. It’s been like 20 years." He also said it would likely begin shooting in mid 2016, around the time Clerks III opens. [Variety]   Star Wars: Rogue One: It's understandable that John Williams won't be able to score every one of the new Star Wars movies, and that's the case beginning with the standalone Star Wars: Rogue One. Instead, Alexandre Desplat will reunite with Godzilla director...
