'Orange Is the New Black' Star Selenis Leyva Teases 'Beautiful' Journey Gloria & Sophia in Season 4

Posted:

'Orange Is the New Black' Europe Premiere In BerlinSelenis Leyva's ready to do some more time in Litchfield Penitentiary.

The "Orange Is the New Black" actress is back in stir for a fourth season as Gloria Mendoza, the former prison kitchen chief who in the new season now finds herself working back under the watchful eye of recently-restored-to-glory Red (Kate Mulgrew), even as the now-privatized prison itself faces a major influx of new inmates. And then, of course, there's the prospect of a likely inevitable and most certainly explosive confrontation with Sophia (Laverne Cox) once she's released from the SHU hole Gloria maneuvered her into. The actress offers up some early prison chatter:

Moviefone: Did this new season cause you to rethink Gloria in any ways?

Selenis Leyva: You know what? I think that she's been really well-established, and we're going to see her just grow from here. I think that Season 3 was crucial and critical in the development of who Gloria is, and it's solid. It's a solid foundation. So now we're just going to see her continue to evolve, but we know who she is. She's been set up nicely.

Does she see her position in the prison further challenged with all these new faces coming in and the shakeup that's happening?

There's a lot of challenges this season. A lot of people are bringing in different dynamics, and Gloria is dealing with so much. She's trying to keep herself sane this season. And she's trying to stay out of whatever mess is happening with the groups, and the tensions, because she has so much on her plate.

Do you get to mix it up with the new faces at all?

They're everywhere. You're going to see. You're going to have new faces coming at you from every corner, every direction. They're everywhere.

Was that new influx exciting for you as a cast?

It is exciting. It's always exciting. Listen, we have our core people that we are so in love with and attached to. These new guys, they come in and they shake it up a little bit for us, and you're going to see how we're going to try to control that.

Gloria's got a little unfinished business--

She has a lot of unfinished business!

--with Sophia, who was still in solitary the last time we saw her.

Yeah, she has unfinished business, and we're going to explore that this season. I think the journey that Sophia and Gloria are taking this season is really beautiful. It's a really well-written story, and these women have a lot more to grow and learn from each other. So I'm really excited about what the fans are going to say when they see where they go.

To have your storyline zero in on those two characters' interactions and be able to work so closely with Laverne Cox -- for you, what was the takeaway?

It was a gift. I have a transgender sister, and from the very beginning I said to Laverne, "I'm going to be watching you closely," and I shared why. We had a good cry because one of the things that we do have in common, Laverne and I, is that we have great mothers. And that her mother has been such an amazing advocate and supporter of Laverne, and my mother has been that to all of us, especially my transgender sister.

So we have a lot in common, that Laverne Cox and myself. She's a good friend, and she does an amazing job with Sophie, and I am really grateful for that.

Have Laverne and your sister had a chance to meet?

Yes, they have!

How'd that relationship kick off?

My goodness! My sister was so happy and excited. She was, like, geeking out. I handed Laverne -- I think it was after the first season -- a GLAAD Award and I presented it to her. And that night, my sister was there. It was a really special moment.

"Orange Is the New Black" Season 4 premieres June 17th on Netflix.

Oprah Winfrey Goes Behind the Megachurch Pulpit in 'Greenleaf'

Posted:

LA Premiere of Season One "Greenleaf" - Arrivals"You've got to have sin or you don't have a show," Oprah Winfrey told me with a knowing grin as we chatted about "Greenleaf," a new scripted drama set inside the scandalous behind-the-scenes world of a black megachurch that she's executive producing and acting in for her OWN network.

And who would know better than Oprah?

After all, during the course of her 25 legendary seasons as America's preeminent daytime talk show host and her journalistic career that preceded it, along with the empowering message of self-improvement she's long championed -- and often in tandem with it -- she's showcased her share of real-world stories involving crime, sin, corruption, scandal, dalliances, betrayals, selfish acts, foolish mistakes, falls from grace and all sorts of human frailties that derail people of every class and color.

So when the television icon has reconnected with her considerable dramatic roots -- she's been, after all, Oscar-nominated for her acting work in "The Color Purple," and was a producer on "Selma," among other prestige film and TV projects -- she recognized the rich reservoir of stories, both moving and provocative, that could be told about a fractured family at the center of a Southern church serving a large African-American congregation.

But as someone who's had her own church traditions loom large in her life, as Winfrey told guests at "Greenleaf's" L.A. premiere, the stories to be told were not any sort of indictment of religious institutions -- just an unflinching look at the personal test, trials, and transgressions of the Greenleaf family as they navigate their lives within the realm of a dynasty of spiritual service. Think a less flashy, more grounded iteration of "Empire," with sermonizing and soul-saving in place of hip-hop and hit-making.

"I've been hearing stories and been a part of stories and telling stories for as long as I can remember, since I first sat in church in Mississippi when I was three years old," said Winfrey, who joked that her recitations in the pews were the beginning of her broadcast career. "Church is my root, is my foundation, is my center, is my life, and everything that I am today came up out and through and within the structures of the black church."

She noted that as the series -- which centers around the prodigal-like return of Grace Greenleaf to her family's megachurch fold after a long absence following her sister's mysterious death, an event that prompts her to both reconnect with her brood and reopen long festering wounds -- developed, creator Craig Wright ("Six Feet Under," "Dirty Sexy Money"), who is white, brought a familial knowledge of the inner workings of a church to the table, but she frequently reminded him of the additional elements involved in traditional black churches.

"We're more than church. It is our community, our doctor, our nurse, our comforter, our psychiatrist," she said. "So I loved the idea to use that platform of the church, and made the church as a foundation for real storytelling about sin, because you don't have a good show without sin. Sinning, and all the issues that face everybody in their lives at one point or another -- jealousies, and betrayals, and lies, and deception, finding the truth, but most importantly, the truth of who you really are."

"That's what this series is about," Winfrey, who also plays a recurring role as Mavis McReady, Grace's aunt, who lives at a distance from the church community running a blues club, continued. "It's about people you know, about people you wish you didn't know. It's about things that happened in your life and the things you've seen happen in other people's lives. Being able to use this form of expression is really a glorified and sacred moment. So it's not just about television, but using television to say something meaningful."

Merle Dandridge, who plays Grace, said she recognized the sensitive and powerful writing when she read the first script. "That's how I knew that I was going to be in good hands," she said. "It's not tackling the church. It's being within the church and understanding what's going on in the church, and talking about the pros and cons of the church with love and affection for it.

"I also felt 'Well, it's about time,'" the actress added. "It's about time we talk about this topic. It's about time that things that might have hurt people that we shed light on and humanize those stories. Maybe somebody can get healed by it."

Dandridge said she's looking forward to seeing the conversation "Greenleaf" sparks among its viewers. "I think the dialogue that's going to start from this show is one of the wonderful things, and one of the reasons I wanted to do this show so much. Because when your work, when your art can create those kinds of conversations, when it can start people having a dialogue and an actual understanding amongst people who might be on polarized lines, I feel like that's art worthwhile, and that's the kind of art I've always wanted to do."

Keith David, who plays Grace's father and the church's spiritual patriarch Bishop James Greenleaf, feels the series is an eye-opening depiction of a world he recognized well. "I knew him," he said of the role. "When I read the script, I recognized him. I was raised in a church. I have lots of friends who are ministers. Having wanted to be a minister myself, I've been to a lot of churches. I've met this man. I recognized him immediately, and I loved him on the page."

"I believe that it's going to be wonderfully resonant for people," David said. "I think they're going to really like what they see."

"I thought this whole concept of the megachurch and nighttime drama smashed together was so interesting because I had never seen anything like it," said Kim Hawthorne, who plays Grace's ambitious, confrontational, and holier-than-thou sister-in-law, Kerissa. "People are really going to see that we're normal people, that the church is a church, a place of worship, but also a business, and that the first family has just as much drama and shenanigans going on as anyone who's coming to the church to worship."

"I'm not preaching to people," Winfrey told me. "But at the end of an episode, [if] you just go, 'Hmmm. Hmmm....' I'm just looking for 'Hmmm.' Three M's -- three M's, not five! Just "Hmmm. That's interesting. Yeah, what was that?' You know? So I'm trying to drop little whispers of light into people's lives."

"Greenleaf" premieres June 21st on OWN.

Lady Gaga May Star in 'A Star Is Born' Remake With Bradley Cooper

Posted:

"Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology" Costume Institute Gala - ArrivalsLady Gaga is poised to make a major leap onto the big screen: The singer-actress is reportedly in talks to headline a remake of Hollywood classic "A Star Is Born."

Both Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter confirm that Gaga is circling the high-profile project, in which she'd star opposite Bradley Cooper, who's also making his feature directorial debut on the film. Rumors of their possible collaboration on the flick surfaced earlier this year when Gaga and Cooper were seen riding Cooper's motorcycle together, prompting speculation that the singer was Cooper's choice to take on the titular starlet's role.

Now, it looks like studio Warner Bros. is also on board the Gaga train, with both Deadline and THR reporting that Gaga and Cooper recently tested for execs -- and, according to Deadline, "the studio loved the results." It seems it's only a matter of time before Gaga formally joins the flick.

"A Star Is Born" first hit the big screen in 1937 with Janet Gaynor and Fredric March, who played a young aspiring actress on the road to fame and her alcoholic actor mentor, whose own once-stellar career is faltering. The drama was remade twice into musical versions: First in 1954, starring Judy Garland and James Mason, and again in 1976, starring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. Beyonce was at one time attached to star in a contemporary remake for director Clint Eastwood, but both eventually left the project.

It's unclear if Cooper and Gaga's version of "A Star Is Born" will take after the straight drama or its musical adaptations, but either way, it seems Gaga -- like her soon-to-be-onscreen alter ego -- is also primed for great things in film: Earlier this year, she took home a Golden Globe for her role in "American Horror Story: Hotel," and was also nominated for an Oscar for co-writing the song "Til It Happens to You," from documentary "The Hunting Ground." Stay tuned for an official casting announcement.

'Wicked' Movie (Finally) Gets 2019 Release Date

Posted:

58th Annual Tony Awards - ShowMore than 12 years after it hit Broadway, a movie version of the musical smash "Wicked" is finally coming to the big screen, and has an official release date.

Studio Universal announced on Thursday that "Wicked" would hit movie theaters on December 20, 2019, a release date that's right in the thick of awards season. And with the show's success on Broadway -- it won three Tonys in 2004, and has grossed more than $1 billion since its debut -- producers of the flick likely have Oscar in their sights as well.

The movie will be directed by Stephen Daldry (who's been nominated for four Oscars, and won a Tony for directing the musical version of his film "Bill Elliot"), who joined the project way back in 2012. Producer Marc Platt, who also produced the stage version of "Wicked," will return in that role as well.

"Wicked" is based on the "Wizard of Oz" prequel novel "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West" by Gregory Maguire, and was adapted for the stage by book writer Winnie Holzman and famed lyricist-composer Stephen Schwartz ("Godspell," "Pippin"), who took home a Tony for his work on the show. Holzman and and Schwartz will collaborate on the film's screenplay.

As for just who will star, Idina Menzel, who won the Best Actress Tony for playing Elphaba in the original Broadway production, admitted in an interview earlier this year that she was probably too old for the role now. Still, we'd love to see her and fellow star Kristin Chenoweth pop up in the production in some capacity. We'll keep our fingers crossed.

'Orphan Black' Is Ending After Season 5

Posted:

On the eve of it season four finale, BBC America series "Orphan Black" has been renewed for a fifth season -- which will also be its last.

Execs from the network announced on Thursday that the show, starring Tatiana Maslany as a string of clones, will wrap its run with a 10-episode season five, which will air sometime in 2017. In a statement, BBC America president Sarah Barnett called the series "a thrilling, genre-bending ride that has captured our fans' imaginations and hearts like no other show."

"Orphan Black" premiered in 2013 to much critical fanfare, and plenty of praise for Maslany, who netted nominations for an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for her performance as protagonist Sarah, who discovers she's one of a group of clones -- and caught up in a mass conspiracy.

"We are excited to deliver an epic conclusion to the tale of Sarah and her clone sisters," said co-creators John Fawcett and Graeme Manson in a statement. "The past four seasons have been a phenomenal adventure and we are eternally grateful to our loyal fans who have loved the twists and thrills of our weird little show. We are thankful to our partners at Temple Street, and to BBC America and Space for their support and giving us the opportunity to end on a high."

The season four finale of "Orphan Black" airs tonight (June 16) on BBC America. No premiere date for season five has been announced yet.

'Supergirl' Casts Tyler Hoechlin as Superman: Good Call?

Posted:

"Everybody Wants Some" - 2016 SXSW Music, Film + Interactive FestivalIt's a bird! It's a plane! It's ... a werewolf? According to Entertainment Weekly, "Supergirl" has cast "Teen Wolf" star Tyler Hoechlin as Clark Kent/Superman, aka cousin to Kara/Supergirl. He'll appear in the first two episodes of "Supergirl" Season 2, which will premiere Mondays this fall on The CW, in a move from CBS.

"Greg [Berlanti] and I have wanted to work with Tyler for ages, so this worked out perfectly because Tyler is Superman," executive producer Andrew Kreisberg told EW. "We are so thrilled and humbled to add another amazing actor to the legacy of this iconic character."

Hoechlin 28, played Derek Hale on the first four seasons of "Teen Wolf," and he'll soon be seen as Boyce Fox in "Fifty Shades Darker." He got his big break opposite Tom Hanks, Paul Newman, Daniel Craig, and Jude Law in 2002's "Road to Perdition," and had a main role on "7th Heaven."

What do you think about Tyler Hoechlin as the new Man of Steel? Some Tom Welling fans are disappointed, since they were hoping for a "Smallville" crossover. Should Henry Cavill be worried about this Super new competition?

Here Are the Top 30 All-Time Late Night Hosts, as Ranked by Different Demos

Posted:

2015 AFI Life Achievement Award Gala Tribute Honoring Steve Martin - ShowHeeeeeeeere's ... Conan?

Johnny Carson is still the No. 1 choice for best talk show host of all time, but a new poll from Ranker shows Conan O'Brien is the favorite current late-night host. The poll -- which was determined through more than 24,000 votes, with 30 hosts to rank -- handed the Jimmy war to Kimmel over Fallon (although not to certain demos, see below) and offered some pretty bad news to Jay Leno, listed down at No. 12, with James Corden at No. 18 and Seth Meyers (who recently banned Donald Trump from "Late Night") down at No. 19.

Here's the overall top 10:

1. Johnny Carson
2. Conan O'Brien
3. David Letterman
4. Jimmy Kimmel
5. Jimmy Fallon
6. Jon Stewart
7. Craig Ferguson
8. Stephen Colbert
9. John Oliver
10. Steve Allen

Jay Leno Visits "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon"Here's the full top 30 ranking.

However, the list changes dramatically when you change the settings to show, say, how women ranked the hosts, or men, or by age, region, and around the world. Ranker broke down the results with some interesting demo details:

Millennials chose Conan O'Brien as No. 1 overall, ahead of Johnny Carson.

Women picked Jon Stewart as their top choice after Johnny Carson and David Letterman.

Gen X and Baby Boomers prefer Jimmy Fallon over Conan O'Brien.

Southern voters ranked Jimmy Fallon No. 2 after Johnny Carson.

Northeastern voters prefer Stephen Colbert and John Oliver ranking them No. 2 and No. 3 respectively after Carson. They also voted Conan, Fallon and Kimmel lower than any other group ranking them at No. 7, No. 18 and No. 19.

Check out the different demo rankings here. Who would be your No. 1?

'Finding Nemo' Honest Trailer Slays With Classic 'Walking Dead' Joke

Posted:

Never thought about it before, but "Finding Nemo" does basically follow the Grimes family storyline of "The Walking Dead" Season 4. Did Pixar crib from the comic, or did the AMC show do a live-action version of the movie? Either way, where is CORAL right now?!

Screen Junkies has outdone itself with the new Honest Trailers video for 2003's "Finding Nemo," posted just days before the release of the 2016 sequel, "Finding Dory."

"Before you catch the sequel that everyone hopes is a little more 'Toy Story 2' than 'Cars 2,' revisit the film that had to spoil its own ending in its title so audiences could have a shred of hope to hold on to through 90 minutes of tears and torture."

Just keep swimming over here to see the trailer:
Never go full Minion!

Poor "mentally handicapped" Dory takes a beating, but the trailer nails pretty much everything about "Taken" "Finding Nemo," including how fans took all the wrong lessons from it -- capturing thousands of their own Nemos, flushing fish down to toilet to "free" them, and even opening Nemo-themed fish restaurants for "complete sociopaths."

Hopefully fans don't take similar lessons from "Finding Dory," which opens June 17.

Tom Cruise Lays Down the Law in First 'Jack Reacher: Never Go Back' Trailer

Posted:

"Two things are gonna happen in the next 90 seconds..." That's the start of a classic Cruise Control scene in the new "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back" trailer, showing 's title character feeling no need for speed, even when handcuffed, as he calmly tells local law enforcement how it is.

This first look at the "Jack Reacher" sequel comes via Entertainment Tonight, with co-star giving behind-the-scenes details about the plot.

Cruise's Reacher is a "drifter and former Army officer," with Smulders playing Major Susan Turner, who took Reacher's place as commander of the military police. But when Turner is arrested for "espionage," Reacher believes she was set up, and heads out to help.

"He's alone and he's sort of in his element, and then he couples up with me and all hell breaks loose," Smulders says with a smile. "We're on the run for this entire movie. We're not spies. You really have to use your brains, you can't rely on any tools."

Watch the trailer:

People recently shared first look photos from the movie, and director Edward Zwick told the magazine that both Cruise, 53, and Smulders, 34, did their own stunts. "I've never seen anybody more prepared both physically and mentally than Tom," Zwick said. "He's tireless and unbelievably focused."

"Jack Reacher: Never Go Back" is scheduled for release October 21.

Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston Dating Rumor Sends Internet Racing for Bad Puns

Posted:

"Marvel's The Avengers" ..Loki (Tom Hiddleston)..Ph: Zade Rosenthal .. 2011 MVLFFLLC. TM & 2011 Marvel. All Rights Reserved. It didn't take Taylor Swift long to Shake It Off with Calvin Harris.

He should've known she was trouble when she walked in.

She had a Blank Space and gave it to Tom Hiddleston, and now Taylor and Calvin have Bad Blood.

Taylor has not been Loki about her new relationship, with photographs showing her kissing the "Avengers" actor and possibly hooking up with him before she was even done with the last guy.

Because Everything Has Changed, and maybe that's Mean, but it's time for her to Begin Again with a new Love Story, and dating Loki is all of our Wildest Dreams, right?

64th Annual BMI Pop Awards - ShowYes, that's the kind of groan-inducing blather we must suffer as an Internet family after photos surfaced of Taylor Swift k-i-s-s-i-n-g Tom Hiddleston.

TMZ claims Calvin Harris feels "betrayed," and deleted not just his make-nice tweet from after he and Taylor broke up, but all of his Taylor photos. She has also removed him from her Instagram.

Q102's iHeartRadio Jingle Ball 2015
This is all very high school, but the real story is the reaction from shocked fans/haters/media/bystanders online, starting with this classic headline:

Whenever Taylor Swift ends a relationship it leads to breakup jokes, but the addition of Tom Hiddleston, most recently seen as a potential next Bond, has shaken and stirred fans to a greater extent than usual.

Hopefully Calvin Harris isn't so mad that he pulls a "puny god" move on Tom Hiddleston, but ... you know ... it was kind of awesome the first time.

'Game of Thrones': Sophie Turner Hypes 'UNbelievable' 'Battle of the Bastards'

Posted:

Here's the synopsis for this Sunday's "Game of Thrones" Season 6, Episode 9, "Battle of the Bastards": "Terms of surrender are rejected and accepted."

The meaning is clear: You must surrender to the hype. Resistance is futile.

Jon Snow appears to lead the charge against Ramsay Snow Bolton in the massive June 19 battle, but Jon is not alone. Sansa Stark Lannister Bolton (watch them make her marry a Frey next) is the true power behind this fight to reclaim Winterfell (and, fingers crossed, save her brother Rickon).
Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa, sounds excited for fans to see the battle play out:

Hype it, sister! Hopefully by emphasizing the "UN" she's not trying to say we literally won't believe what happens (like we still don't quite believe that Arya Stark survived what should've been lethal wounds from a trained assassin in Episode 8). It probably just means that the hour lives up to the exciting trailer, stunning photos, and previous hype from Kit Harington and producers that it's an "epic" episode and the biggest battle they've ever done on the show.

Watch the promo again:
The only downside is that after this epic episode we only have one more hour (actually 69 minutes for the finale) left to Season 6. What are we supposed to do for the next year?
