Guillermo del Toro (The Strain) has been working on an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's 1931 novella, At the Mountains of Madness, since 2004. First del Toro was set to create it with Dreamworks, but brought the script with him in 2007 when he made a deal at Universal Pictures. Although it was a passion project for del Toro, the adaptation was stuck in pre-production at Universal for years. When James Cameron joined the film as a producer, it seemed del Toro might make some headway on the project.

Ever since people first wove stories about monsters by the light of campfires, "horror" has proven a remarkably resilient and adaptable genre label. Whether it’s crafting ghost stories from the ineffable fear of death or monster tales from an instinctual fear of predation, human beings have proven remarkably adept at mining our vast catalog of fears and transforming them into compelling narrative. We have always loved to come up with new and different ways to scare each other.
Perhaps this cultural immortality is why it’s so disappointing when contemporary horror films become bogged down in formula and lowest-common-denominator plotting – but also why it’s so refreshing when a scary movie tries out something new and unexpected. Fourth of July is here, everybody. Can you believe it? Get ready for grilling and chilling.
Whovians were surely disappointed when it was announced last week that Doctor Who wouldn’t be appearing at San Diego Comic-Con. No panel, no new footage – nothing! There was a silver lining, however, in that Doctor Who season 8 premieres only a few weeks after Comic-Con and will air continuously, meaning no breaks to split the season into two halves as had been done with previous seasons.
And with Doctor Who‘s season 8 premiere so near, it’s only a matter of time before the BBC releases a full trailer, perhaps even a clip or two. We’ve already had our initial look at new Doctor Peter Capaldi when the Eleventh Doctor regenerated at the end of last year’s Christmas special.
