The Geek Beat: Batman's 75th, 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Gear, and More Stuff to Look for in July

Posted: 01 Jul 2014 08:00 PM PDT

With the exception of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, July is a relatively quiet month for high-profile movies from the geekier side of Hollywood, but you should probably consider this the calm before the storm, given next month's rush of big-budget, highly anticipated films. Of course, next month's big movies are this month's big comics, toys and other items launched ahead of a film's arrival in theaters, so there's plenty of wallet-breaking opportunities for fans of Guardians of the Galaxy. Batman's 75th anniversary also kicks into high gear this month with an assortment of books and collectibles for devotees of DC's Dark Knight. Here is some of the cool stuff hitting shelves (and theaters) in July that you might want to look for...   What to...

Scott Derrickson Explains What in 'Deliver Us from Evil' Is His Proudest Directorial Decision Ever

Posted: 01 Jul 2014 06:00 PM PDT

Nothing ever truly dies in Hollywood. Case in point: in 2003 director Scott Derrickson met a hard-core cop from the Bronx named Ralph Sarchie, who happened to give him a copy of a long out-of-print book about the exorcism-related death of a young woman. Derrickson found Sarchie, a demonologist in his own right, to be a fascinating figure worthy of his own movie. When that didn't happen, he instead turned the book Sarchie gave him into a movie called The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Fast-forward nearly a decade. Now Derrickson has an increased amount of clout under his belt (thanks to the hit success of Emily Rose, The Day the Earth Stood Still and Sinister) and was able to finally turn Ralph Sarchie's story into a movie called Deliver Us from Evil, which just so happens to...

See How They Created the Amazing Sound Design in 'How to Train Your Dragon 2'

Posted: 01 Jul 2014 05:00 PM PDT

Films are widely regarded as a visual medium, but sound has played an important part in every feature released since the birth of the talkies. This cool new video demonstrates the work and artistry that goes into sound design, using this summer’s How to Train Your Dragon 2 as an example. This 10-minute mini documentary provides a fascinating look into one of the areas of filmmaking that most people know little about. Being a sound designer is a bit of a thankless job when it comes to mainstream-audience recognition, but you’re likely to have a newfound appreciation for the work of these creative types after watching the clip. If you find yourself hankering for more of How to Train Your Dragon 2’s audio excellence in the wake of watching this video, you can...

'Captain America' Gets Depressing in Subversive New Short Film

Posted: 01 Jul 2014 04:00 PM PDT

Oh, ‘Murica. Land of the free, home of the… 25th ranking in math, 24th in reading, and morbidly obese. These are the stats touted in this extremely patriotic and totally depressing Captain America video that puts a subversive spin on the Marvel Comics character. The red-, white- and blue-clad Cap was invented to spread the patriotic cheer during World War II, but the Jack Kirby-created figure has seen a revival over the years — including Chris Evans' recent portrayal. This Animation Domination High-Def short creates a new theme song for Cap, using the (dire) world rankings as its guide. The drab ditty transforms the strong, heroic figure into a tragically unintelligent slob — you know, basically the way the rest of the world views...

Watch: America's First 4DX Movie Theater Opens, but Is the Experience Worth It?

Posted: 01 Jul 2014 01:00 PM PDT

Last weekend was a pretty big occasion for film fans – not because Michael Bay unleashed another Transformers movie on audiences, but because it saw the opening of America’s first 4DX theater. If you thought seeing movies in 3D was a big deal, 4D is even more involved (and significantly more expensive). The Regal Cinemas L.A. Live in Los Angeles has the distinction of being home to the country’s first 4DX experience – and the guys from /Film were kind enough to bite the bullet and see Transformers: Age of Extinction, then report back on the experience. What is 4DX? Essentially, 4DX technology takes a film and turns it into an amusement park ride. Seats rumble and move in relation to the action on-screen, water is spritzed on to viewers, lightning...

New on DVD/Blu-ray: Why 'The Unknown Known' Is One of the Most Fascinating Movies of the Year

Posted: 01 Jul 2014 10:00 AM PDT

The Unknown Known - RadiusTWC - Blu-ray and DVD Director: Errol Morris Cast: Donald Rumsfeld The Unknown Known is one of the most fascinating movies of the year. It doesn't matter what your politics are, this is an engrossing look inside the brain of a highly influential man in world politics, and the many different ways people are able to rationalize and justify actions taken against others. In this case, that person just so happens to have been an integral component of America's war on terror. But as with brilliant documentarian Errol Morris' equally brilliant documentary The Fog of War, what makes The Unknown Known work so well as a film is its ability to live with its subject, and to understand and observe it without passing any kind of overt judgment...
