Donald Glover Will Be Lando Calrissian In The 'Han Solo' Movie

Posted: 21 Oct 2016 08:31 PM PDT

Donald Glover (Community, Magic Mike XXL) is one of those young actors that fans keep wanting to cast in everything. He's funny, charismatic, handsome, quick witted and has that kind of boy next door air to him that Hollywood loves. Most notably there was a huge campaign for him to play Spider-Man, though obviously that ended up not happening (in live-action, at least). As soon as Disney officially announced their Star Wars prequel film about a young Han Solo, Glover's name once again topped fan casting lists. Not for Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich has that role), obviously, but for his old pal Lando Calrissian. The character, who we first met when he betrayed Han in The Empire Strikes Back, wasn't even initially confirmed to be in the movie, but people were just...

New Movie Trailers: 'Nocturnal Animals,' 'Frank & Lola' and 'Pet'

Posted: 21 Oct 2016 08:30 PM PDT

This December, a few acclaimed thrillers are heading your way, and we've got new trailers for each of them. Preview the SXSW hit Pet and two movies starring Michael Shannon below.    Pet In this disturbing-looking feature, Lost and Lord of the Rings star Dominic Monaghan plays an obsessive creep who kidnaps Ksenia Solo (Orphan Black) and keeps her in a cage. Our own Peter Martin, reviewing elsewhere, says it "stirs up emotions that are not easily caged, and much of its reception out of SXSW focused on its twists and how it takes very dark turns. Directed by Spanish horror filmmaker Carles Torres (Apartment 143), this one can be found in theaters on December 2.    Frank & Lola  The first of the...

Park Chan-wook Talks Remakes, Sci-Fi and His Twisted New Movie 'The Handmaiden'

Posted: 21 Oct 2016 07:00 PM PDT

The Handmaiden isn't quite like any movie South Korean director Park Chan-wook has made to date, and yet it contains the signature tastes of his most beloved movies. It's got the hidden agendas and violent ends of his vengeance trilogy (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, and Lady Vengeance). It's got the forbidden romance of Thirst. It's got the twisty, unpredictable dynamics of Stoker. And that's just scratching the surface. Park Chan-wook's latest starts off with a simple plan. A slick con-man, Count Fujiwara, hires a petty thief, Sook-Hee, to help him win the affections of Lady Hideko, a Japanese heiress. Sook-Hee is hired as Hideko's personal handmaiden, a position she'll use to help manipulate the Japanese heiress to fall in love...

Ten Questions With MondoCon Artist Kevin Tong

Posted: 21 Oct 2016 04:30 PM PDT

You're not going to find the best movie posters being made today in actual movie theaters. That's a bummer, but it's the truth. Sure, occasionally a big studio movie will get a gorgeous, creative poster, but for the most part they try to sell their movies with safe, broad imagery that'll appeal to as many wandering eyes as possible. Usually it's just the floating heads of its stars and the title of the movie. For the best movie art made these days you need to turn to the boutique side of things often orchestrated by Mondo in Austin, Gallery 1988 in L.A., Bottleneck Gallery in NYC and more. Artists from all over the world contribute to these, and more, throughout the year. And then once a year dozens and dozens of them descend on Austin, Texas for...

Comics on Film: Why Isn't the Hulk More Important to the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Posted: 21 Oct 2016 03:00 PM PDT

Late last year, actor Mark Ruffalo shed some new light on the mysterious absence of a new Hulk film at Marvel Studios by saying that the rights to the character were somehow complicated by the relationship between Marvel and Universal Pictures, which may or may not be the case. Regardless, it gave an entirely new perspective on the big-screen issues surrounding Marvel's iconic green behemoth, especially considering that the character was almost universally lauded as a standout element of the 2012 mega-hit The Avengers, where Ruffalo made his debut as Bruce Banner.   While this is certainly unfortunate news to anyone who counts themselves as a standalone fan of the Avengers' chartreuse powerhouse, it also brings up another issue entirely: even if they...

'Aquaman' to Be Like 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' Meets 'Romancing the Stone,' Says Director

Posted: 21 Oct 2016 01:30 PM PDT

What sort of movie will Aquaman prove to be? The individual elements sound intriguing. Jason Momoa proved his action credentials on TV's Game of Thrones as well as the new version of Conan the Barbarian, so he sounds like a splendid selection to be Aquaman. Amber Heard has appeared in a variety of comic and dramatic roles over her career and is a great choice as Mera, Queen of Atlantis, while the wonderfully versatile Willem Dafoe will undoubtedly bring some of his trademark edge to Vulko, an advisor to Aquaman. But what does director James Wan have in mind? Wan, of course, is best known as the director of horror movies like Insidious and The Conjuring 2. Yet he also made the terrific crime thriller Death Sentence as well as the blockbuster action sequel Furious 7. When...
