Harry Shearer Is Suing for $125 Million in 'This Is Spinal Tap' Profits

Posted:

THIS IS SPINAL TAPYeah, this lawsuit goes way past 11. Harry Shearer took to Twitter to explain his "fairness" mission when it comes to suing for profits from "This Is Spinal Tap."

Shearer played Derek Smalls in director Rob Reiner's 1984 classic -- which co-starred Christopher Guest and Michael McKean -- and he is also credited as one of the co-writers and co-creators of the music. According to the Wall Street Journal, Shearer filed a lawsuit Monday alleging that he and his co-creators have been stiffed of profits for years. Through his production company, he's asking for $125 million in compensatory and punitive damages from Vivendi SA (which owns the movie rights) and its StudioCanal subsidiary.

Shearer (now potentially more famous for voicing so many characters on "The Simpsons") has turned his Twitter into headquarters for the lawsuit, posting videos and directing people to a site called Fairness Rocks, where he explains more of his intentions:

Here's what's posted on the homepage of Fairness Rocks:

This US legal complaint is important for all creators and artists
Popular music and films make huge money for rights-owning corporations.
Yet, too often, the artists and creators get a raw deal from exploitation of their talent.
I want to help rebalance this equation.

My case against Vivendi is simple, if perhaps a little shocking.

It's been 34 years since This Is Spinal Tap was released.

Yet, the creators have been told that global music sales from the soundtrack album total just US$98.
We're also, apparently, only entitled to share US$81 (between us) from global merchandising sales.

This shocks me, given Tap's enduring popularity.

So, Vivendi – it's not a big ask. Just show us how you're exploiting our creative work and pay us a fair share.
#FairnessRocks

If you're a fellow creator, the information on this site may be of interest.
The rights campaigners listed here may well be able to help you.
Good luck.

Sounds like he's livin' in a hell hole (sorry) so best of luck in whatever happens from here. At least he's making his point.

Stephen Merchant Is the New Caliban in Surprising 'Logan' Photos

Posted:

BAFTA LA's Behind Closed Doors With Stephen MerchantThe third Wolverine movie is going to give us the second Caliban within a single year.

"Logan" director James Mangold and Stephen Merchant both shared photos of Merchant in character, appearing to confirm his role as albino mutant Caliban, who was also in "X-Men: Apocalypse" earlier this year, but played by Tomas Lemarquis.

Check out the new photos of Merchant's character:

Those of us who still know Stephen Merchant best from comedies like "The Office," "Hello Ladies," and "Hot Fuzz" -- not to mention his super-dirty "Lip Sync Battle" -- were pleasantly surprised to hear of his casting in a Wolverine sequel. But now some fans are even more surprised that the "X-Men" universe is being reshuffled with another recasting.

"Logan" stars Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart (as a much older Professor X) with Boyd Holbrook as villain Donald Pierce. A new image on Instagram suggests Pierce's storyline will be as leader of the assassins called The Reavers.

"Logan" is scheduled for release March 3, 2017.

Why 'The Walking Dead' Bosses Felt Intense 'Pressure' to Change Who Negan Killed

Posted:

Warning: Spoilers ahead from "The Walking Dead" comic book.

"The Walking Dead" Season 7 premiere is about to reveal who Negan killed in his first meeting with Rick Grimes's group. Will it follow the comic book or not? What would you do if you were comic book writer/executive producer Robert Kirkman and showrunner Scott M. Gimple?

Negan first met Rick's group in Issue 100, which came out in July 2012. That's when Negan took his barbed-wire-covered baseball bat named Lucille, did his "eenie, meenie, miney mo" thing, and bashed Glenn to death.

As The Hollywood Reporter noted in an interview with Kirkman, that moment is so well known by now that even people who don't read the comics are aware that it was Glenn who died. Not only that, the show has teased out Glenn's death by baseball bat several times -- at Terminus, and holding a bat outside Noah's ravaged community in Richmond.
Steven Yeun - The Walking Dead _ Season 5, Episode 9 _ BTS - Photo Credit: Gene Page/AMCKirkman admitted he -- and presumably Gimple, who wrote the Season 7 premiere -- felt serious pressure to "remix" the Negan kill for TV. "Remix" is the word TWD tends to use for how they change deaths in the comic book for TV. Hershel's TV death was a "remix" of the same death Tyreese had in the comic, and Denise ended up dying on TV in the same way Abraham did in the comic.

Here's part of Kirkman's great Q&A with THR:

What kind of pressure do you feel to remix what happens in the 100th issue of the comics with Negan and Glenn? At this point, fans who haven't read the comics know what happens.

It's more pressure than we've ever felt. We are changing things here and there as we always have done. To a certain extent, we're staying the course. The way that we do the show and the way we adapt the comic hasn't really changed but the material in the comic has changed substantially. Being true to that evolution and allowing that world to change from season to season and being able to scale up the show and the way the comic book has scaled up has been a challenge.

Going into this season, we're going to have four distinct locations and four distinct groups of characters that are all doing their own things. That's a huge undertaking to do. The challenge isn't how much do we remix? Do we do more? Do we do less? The challenge has been expanding the scale of the show up and being true to the source material and opening up this world in way that I strongly feel will set the stage for many season to come. Season seven as a whole will have so many new environments, so many new characters and so many new scenarios that it will almost seem like season one of an entirely different show. It'll have all the stuff you love from The Walking Dead but this isn't a show where you're ever going to be, 'Oh my God, am I still watching this show in season seven? Enough is enough, I get it.' We're telling different stories with different characters that have new and exciting and cool stuff [happening]. This season more than any other changes the stage that we're telling stories in.

And here's his response to the Glenn foreshadowing:

Given the baiting with Glenn and his many brushes with death — many of which can be seen as foreshadowing to Negan including when he was almost killed at Terminus with a guy swinging a baseball bat. After the dumpster dive, if Glenn isn't a victim, how do you explain that?

The season five premiere where they're at Terminus, those things are fan service. The average TV viewer is not going to be aware of the specific storyline from the comic series. That's a moment for the hardcore fans who are aware of that. I wouldn't take a playful moment where we're tipping our hat to those fans to be any indicator to what we have planned or what we're doing. This is us acknowledging that we know there are different tiers to our fan base and we're having fun with it. [...]

And here's Kirkman's answer to the rumors/spoilers about more than one death in the Season 7 opener:

What's the likelihood that more than one character will be killed off in the season premiere?

I don't know that our audience is necessarily bloodthirsty enough to be wanting to hear that there's another death. One death should be enough for this audience and one death will definitely have the affect that we're looking for. It will certainly set the stage for a very exciting season. It's going to be a rough, rough, rough episode emotionally. Knowing what's coming and knowing what happens, it's really hard for me to watch. We've gotten to know all these characters over so many years and to see not only the one that dies but how it affects all the other characters involved? You can feel their emotions because you know their relationships and what they're experiencing. It's a really gut-wrenching episode. I don't think anyone will be hungry for more blood when the episode airs.

One death would definitely be more than enough for the audience, but don't forget that Kirkman has a merit badge in trolling. Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Greg Nicotero have both hinted to more than one death in the premiere, or at least (in Nicotero's case) more than one massively traumatic event. Plus, The Spoiling Dead Fans's set spoilers on which actors have been seen and not seen may be hints on who dies, and they point to two major characters dying in Episode 1. Then again, Kirkman did say they used body doubles and went to great lengths to try and keep the whole season's secrets intact, beyond the premiere.

"The Walking Dead" Season 7 starts Sunday, October 23 at 9 p.m. on AMC.

'American Crime Story' Season 3 Will Cover Versace Murder

Posted:

FASHION-FRANCE-VERSACEWhat do you think: Lady Gaga or Sarah Paulson -- which Ryan Murphy regular should play Donatella Versace in the latest installment of "American Crime Story"?

For all we know, neither actress will make the cut, but Deadline reports that FX will base "American Crime Story" Season 3 around the 1997 murder of legendary designer Gianni Versace at the hands of serial killer Andrew Cunanan. "Versace/Cunanan," based on the book "Vulgar Favors," will reportedly film around the same time as Season 2, which follows the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

VERSACE SHOOTING CUNANANRyan Murphy is expected to return to direct the first episodes of "Katrina" and "Versace/Cunanan," as he did for the Emmy-winning "People vs. O.J. Simpson." The Versace season will reportedly film in Los Angeles in Miami next spring. Deadline said producers are already meeting with actors for the title roles "and an A-list actress in negotiations to play Versace's sister Donatella Versace, who is featured prominently in the story."

"Katrina" will air first, but apparently "Versace/Cunanan" was fast-tracked based on the strength of the first script from Tom Rob Smith. Honestly, it sounds like it has the kind of dark rubber-necking appeal of "People vs. O.J." so maybe they should consider flipping the order and making "Versace" Season 2. Just an idea.

Chandler Dies & Returns as a Ghost in Brilliant 'Friends' Mashup

Posted:

Could this *be* more eerily perfect?

Just in time for Halloween, a creative "Friends" fan conjured a 16-minute mashup called "The One Where Chandler Dies...," imagining an episode where Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry) dies in an accident with an ice cream truck, then comes back as a glowing green ghost the other friends can't see. It's funny, creepy, strangely moving, and amazingly clever.

Check it out:
Well done, er, "Dogfood"! That's the name of the YouTuber who posted the video, adding this description to reveal the impressive amount of work it took:

"A loving mashup offering an alternate ending to Friends that's at once very bleak, but also existential, spooky and uplifting Originally envisioned at a 90-seconds max. duration, the final cut is just 6 minutes shy of the standard 22-min episode length, contains around 125 FX shots and parts of around 125 episodes of the 236 made."

NBC should seriously make a deal with this YouTuber and air an extended version of the mashup as a special Halloween episode. "Friends" fans are always begging for a reunion episode ... well, here you go! (And it's slightly less depressing than the fan fiction that "Friends" was all in Phoebe's mind.)

See Jess, Lane, and Friday Night Dinner in New 'Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life' Photos

Posted:

Gilmore GirlsNetflix was apparently feeling mighty generous on Tuesday, offering fans not only four awesome new posters for "Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life," but a bunch of new official photos, too.

The images feature some characters we've seen before (Lorelai, Rory, Emily, and Luke all appear once again, like they did in the previous few batches of photos released by the streaming service), and some we're seeing for the first time since the original series (hello, Jess <3). And they also tease a few fun scenarios from the revival, including something involving Lane passing out Korean food under the watchful eye of Mrs. Kim, and the return of the Gilmores' traditional Friday night dinners.

His death will be an integral part of the show, prompting some soul searching on behalf of all the Gilmores -- and perhaps spurring Rory to reconnect with her former flame, Jess? So far, he's the only one of her old boyfriends to get his own featured photo (in it, he's having a heart to heart with Luke); could that mean that "Gilmore Girls" has officially declared itself #TeamJess?

Another photo features Lorelai and Rory clutching coffee cups and gazing up at the sky (perhaps shortly after their reunion at the beginning of the "Winter" episode, the first entry in the new series), and the rest are portraits of Lorelai, Rory, and Luke, both individually and as a group. Luke looks appropriately skeptical of something in one of them, proving that all of these characters may have aged, but they're still the same people fans have come to know and love.

Anna Camp to Return for 'Pitch Perfect 3'

Posted:

"Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" Season 2 World PremiereThe original Barden Bellas are getting back together, with Anna Camp set to return for "Pitch Perfect 3."

The Hollywood Reporter writes that Camp -- who recently got hitched to fellow "Pitch Perfect" star Skylar Astin -- will reprise her role as Aubrey Posen, the a cappella perfectionist who led the Bellas in 2012's "Pitch Perfect," and returned for a cameo in "Pitch Perfect 2." Fellow original stars Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, and Brittany Snow -- who also starred in the blockbuster sequel -- are also returning for round three in the unlikely smash series.

Camp herself confirmed the news on Twitter, sharing a GIF of her character uttering one of her signature "aca"-amended phrases.
"It's official," the actress wrote. "She's baaaaaaaaack...!"

Also back will be Elizabeth Banks, who's once again co-starring and co-producing, though she won't be directing this time around like she did for "Pitch Perfect 2." Instead, directing duties will go to Trish Sie ("Step Up: All In"). It's unclear so far what the plot for "Pitch Perfect 3" will be, though with all of the main characters having graduated, perhaps a college reunion is in order?

We'll see next year. "Pitch Perfect 3" is due in theaters on December 22, 2017.

Jason Segel Would Love a 'How I Met Your Mother' Reunion

Posted:

CBS 2013 Upfront Presentation"How I Met Your Mother" ran for nine seasons before wrapping in 2014 with one of the most controversial series finales in recent memory, but for at least one star of the sitcom, there could be more story to tell.

Jason Segel, who played goofy Marshall Eriksen on the CBS comedy, recently commented on the series while appearing at the Austin Film Festival. When asked a question about his interest in appearing in a "HIMYM" reunion, the actor didn't hesitate with his enthusiastic response.

"I'd be around for whatever those guys wanted to do," Segel said. "It changed my life."

It's unclear exactly who the actor was referring to as "those guys," though a safe bet would be series creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas. Segel singled out the talent of the "HIMYM" writing staff when asked for his thoughts on where a potential reunion would go.

"I would leave that to the writers," the actor said of a hypothetical reunion plot. "One of the great things about my relationship to that show is I never got involved in the writing, I just tried to execute what these brilliant writers did, so I would leave that to them, as usual."

While those who were turned off by the "HIMYM" finale (*raises hand*) may question those writers' brilliance, it's nice to see Segel give them the credit they're due for their hard work over so many seasons of television. Now the actor just needs to see if his costars Neil Patrick Harris, Cobie Smulders, Alyson Hannigan, and Josh Radnor are on board. (There better be a beyond-the-grave cameo from Cristin Milioti's Mother, too.)

Kerry Washington Welcomes Second Child, Son Caleb Kelechi

Posted:

HBO's Post Emmy Awards Reception - ArrivalsKerry Washington and her husband, former NFL star Nnamdi Asomugha, have expanded their family, welcoming their second child, a son, earlier this month.

E! News reports that the "Scandal" star gave birth on October 5 to a baby boy, named Caleb Kelechi Asomugha. He joins big sister Isabelle Amarachi, 2, who was born in 2014.

Washington's pregnancy was made public back in May, and she confirmed she was expecting when she debuted her baby bump at the Met Gala later that month. The actress and Asomugha are notoriously private, though she did open up a bit about her second pregnancy in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres in September, telling the host that she and her husband wanted to keep the sex a surprise until he or she was born.

Another thing Washington discussed with DeGeneres was how "Scandal" was handling her pregnancy. Earlier this year, it was unclear whether or not her character, Olivia Pope, would also be expecting. Showrunners decided against that, though, and Washington said that the series had to get creative while trying to hide her growing bump, deploying "Big coats, big bags ... hiding behind different body parts of other actors."

The sixth season of "Scandal" has been delayed until midseason in order to accommodate Washington's pregnancy and maternity leave. No official premiere date has been announced yet.

Congrats to the new family of four!

Help the Smithsonian Save Dorothy's Ruby Slippers from 'The Wizard of Oz'

Posted:

"The Wizard of Oz" Ruby Red Slippers ViewingDorothy's iconic ruby slippers from "The Wizard of Oz" could use some magic from Glinda the Good Witch, but they'll have to settle from some assistance from the public instead: The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History has launched a Kickstarter campaign to help save the famous shoes from nearly 80 years' worth of wear and tear.

According to the fundraising site, the slippers -- which were created specifically for the 1939 movie, and worn by star Judy Garland throughout filming -- are beginning to show their age. Here's how the museum describes their current condition:

Now in their eighth decade, the shoes are fragile and actively deteriorating. Even to the naked eye the damage is quite obvious: the color has faded and the slippers appear dull and washed-out. The coating on the sequins that give the shoes their hallmark ruby color is flaking off its gelatin base. Some threads that hold sequins in place have broken.

Because federal funding for the Smithsonian is limited, the museum is turning to the public for the funds necessary to help restore and preserve the slippers for future generations to enjoy. Part of that process will include careful study of the shoes to scientifically determine the best way to display them, then constructing a case that features the optimal environmental conditions for them (controlling elements such as lighting exposure and humidity, among other factors).

Once the preservation is complete, the slippers will go on display at a special Smithsonian exhibit titled On With the Show, scheduled to open sometime in 2018. Supporters of the campaign can received rewards such as t-shirts and tote bags, and larger donations will yield big-ticket items such as replicas of the slippers. No word on whether or not they can transport you back home with a few clicks.

Check out the campaign here.

Negan From 'The Walking Dead' Is Like the Joker, Norman Reedus Says

Posted:

Negan, the new villain introduced at the end of season six of "The Walking Dead," is preparing for a long stay on the show, set to dominate season seven and remain a threat for the foreseeable future. It takes a special character to make such a huge impression so late in the show's run, but Negan seems up to the task, and according to one original "TWD" star, he's very similar to another iconic villain who also hails from the comic world.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Norman Reedus discussed what it was like to add Negan to the mix, and how the cast has acclimated to working with the actor behind him, Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Reedus had nothing but praise for his new costar, noting that Morgan was able to elicit some pretty devastating reactions from the rest of the cast while filming that now-infamous season six finale cliffhanger, in which Negan beats one of the Alexandria crew to death with his baseball bat, Lucille.

Speaking to both the character's comic inspiration as well as the huge expectations that come with introducing someone already well known to "Walking Dead" graphic novel readers, Reedus likened Negan to another familiar, charismatic villain. Here's how he explained it to EW:

He's a prick [laughs] but you know, I have to say, Jeffrey's killing it — no pun intended. He's great. He's super charismatic, and he's enjoying being this jerk way too much, as a matter of fact. You know, it's a real blessing we have him on the show. He's brought so much new energy to this show, and that character is like the Joker. It has to be great, and he's delivering, and everyone likes him, and he's fun. He's a cool guy and everything, but in the moment, everyone wants to f—ing kill him, and then we wrap, and we're all having fun again. So he's a great addition to the show.

It sounds like Morgan's costars have gotten along with him much better than Jared Leto's "Suicide Squad" castmates, who were terrorized by Leto's creepy gifts and odd behavior during production. And what we've seen from him so far indicates that everything Reedus said is true.

Look for even more Negan when "The Walking Dead" returns for season seven on October 23.

'The Voice' Renewed Through Season 13, Gwen Stefani to Return for Season 12

Posted:

the voice, renewed, season 12, season 13, miley cyrus, gwen stefaniNBC is doubling down on its hit singing competition series "The Voice," renewing the show for two more seasons.

That means that the reality series will stick around for season 12 and season 13, and in keeping with its tradition of rotating coaches, will see the return of Gwen Stefani in season 12. She'll swap out with Miley Cyrus, who will sit out season 12, but has been confirmed to return for season 13.

Perennial coaches Adam Levine and Blake Shelton will return for season 12, as will Alicia Keys, a new addition for this current 11th season along with Cyrus. No official coaching lineup has been announced for season 13 yet, so it's unclear if Keys will also stick with the show through then. As ever, host Carson Daly will be back to emcee the proceedings for both new seasons, as he's done since the series premiered back in 2011.

"We can't wait to experience the unique chemistry and energy Gwen, Alicia, Blake and Adam will bring to Season 12," said Paul Telegdy, president of the alternative and reality group for NBC Entertainment, in a statement. "With Miley returning for Season 13, we're truly ecstatic about the unmatched musical know-how and talent coming together in our coming seasons."

Season 11 of "The Voice," featuring coaches Levine, Shelton, Cyrus, and Keys, is currently airing now on NBC.

New 'Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life' Posters Are a Seasonal Delight

Posted:

We're now just over a month away from the release of "Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life," and Netflix is rewarding fans for their patience by releasing four brand new posters for the revival series.

The one-sheets celebrate the new episodes' seasonal theme, with each one representing a specific season/episode: Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall. Lorelai (Lauren Graham) and Rory (Alexis Bledel) appear on each poster, smiling and posing with season-appropriate props, including snowflakes, bouquets of flowers, sparklers and a flag, and falling leaves. (You can probably figure out which posted corresponds to which episode based on those items.)

They're striking, beautiful images that perfectly capture the excitement that this revival has generated, and the essence of the series overall. And they're in keeping with what we've seen so far from "A Year in the Life," staying true to the warm, witty tone that made the original series run such a beloved fan favorite (and made it such a no-brainer decision for Netflix to bring it back from the dead after a nearly decade-long absence).

Of course, we know that it's not all fun and games with the revival, with the death of Richard (the late Edward Herrmann) hanging over the series, and informing some big life decisions on the part of Lorelai, Rory, and Emily (Kelly Bishop). How our "Girls" handle that loss will no doubt be bittersweet, but then again, moments of poignancy are also a classic "Gilmore" trope, too.

"Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life" debuts on Netflix on November 25.

A Second Live-Action 'Mulan' Movie Is in the Works From Sony

Posted:

Hollywood never met an idea it didn't want to revisit over and over again, and that's once again the case, as another live-action adaptation of "Mulan" is in the works.

This version, from Sony Pictures International Productions, is completely separate from the currently in-development Disney remake of its animated classic "Mulan." Deadline reports that Sony's take will also tell the story of the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, a young woman who takes her father's place in the Imperial Army, though it will be a co-production with China, and will be developed specifically with the international market in mind. (That plan should head off any potential issues with whitewashing, which Disney had to deny would become a problem with its production.)

According to Deadline, Sony's version will not base any of its production decisions on Disney's reboot, which is currently slated for release in November 2018. And though comparisons between the two projects are inevitable and unavoidable, this second flick is distinguishing itself by already securing a director: Alex Graves, known for his work on hit HBO series "Game of Thrones."

It will be interesting to see how both films progress through development and whether both will make it into theaters -- perhaps in the same year. It's a surprisingly common occurrence, with famous examples including the 2012 release of "Snow White and the Huntsman" and "Mirror Mirror," the back-to-back Truman Capote biopics "Capote" (2005) and "Infamous" (2006), and the dueling disaster flicks "Volcano" and "Dante's Peak" in 1997.

Stay tuned to see how the two "Mulan"'s continue to battle it out.

CBS Orders Full Seasons of 'Bull,' 'MacGyver,' 'Kevin Can Wait,' Cancels Two Series

Posted:

cbs, full-season order, bull, macgyver, kevin can waitCBS has been busy this week, ordering full seasons of three freshmen series and canceling two other newbies.

First up are the successful shows, and as prognosticators predicted, the network's full-season pickups don't come as much of a surprise: The Eye has ordered more of Michael Weatherly drama "Bull," '80s action reboot "MacGyver," and the latest Kevin James sitcom "Kevin Can Wait." Each series will now get nine additional episodes, bumping up all of their season totals to 22 episodes.

"We're thrilled viewers have embraced these three shows creatively," said CBS Entertainment president Glenn Geller in a statement. "Each one has made an immediate and positive impact on our schedule, while significantly contributing to growing their respective nights."

And now for the bad news: CBS has canceled freshmen shows "BrainDead" and "American Gothic." Both series suffered from low ratings, which declined throughout their respective summer runs.

The failure of those shows is a particular disappointment to the Eye, since they both hailed from some of the network's most high-profile collaborators. "BrainDead," a quirky political/sci-fi hybrid, was created by "The Good Wife" team of Robert and Michelle King, while crime family drama "Gothic" was a product of Steven Spielberg's Amblin Television.

CBS will try again, though, will three new shows set to debut next week: Joel McHale comedy "Man With a Plan," Matt LeBlanc sitcom "The Great Indoors," and Dermot Mulroney drama "Pure Genius."

Leonardo DiCaprio Wants to Make a 'Captain Planet' Movie: Report

Posted:

captain planet, planeteers, movie, leonardo dicaprioLeonardo DiCaprio is known for his environmental advocacy, and that passion apparently extends to fictional properties, too: The Oscar winner is reportedly prepping to produce a big screen adaptation of '90s cartoon "Captain Planet."

The Hollywood Reporter writes that DiCaprio is shepherding the project through his Appian Way production company, and will produce alongside partner Jennifer Davisson Killoran. The flick is being developed at Paramount Pictures, and the screenwriting duo of Jono Matt (a former assistant and production assistant on television series including "Sons of Anarchy" and "Glee," who has two scripts in development) and Glen Powell (the current star of "Scream Queens" and a supporting star in Richard Linklater's "Everybody Wants Some!!") will pen the script.

"Captain Planet and the Planeteers" aired from 1990 to 1992 and focused on the environmentally-friendly titular superhero and his band of Planeteers, a diverse group of teens from around the globe who harnessed the powers of Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, and Heart to assist the Captain. The series was later revived as "The New Adventures of Captain Planet," which ran from 1993 through 1996.

As THR notes, however, this movie project will be a "subversive" take on the familiar material, with the action set "years after the adventures of the show, with the Captain now a washed-up has-been who needs the kids more than they need him." Guess dystopian adaptations of beloved childhood properties are here to stay.

No word yet on when the project expects to get off the ground, or if Powell will also plan on starring. Stay tuned.
