Ryan Gosling in 'Gilmore Girls'? It Could Have Happened

Posted:

"The Nice Guys" Photocall - The 69th Annual Cannes Film FestivalYou can mourn what never was, and here's proof: Ryan Gosling once tried out for "Gilmore Girls" and didn't get the part.

During this weekend's inaugural "Gilmore Girls" Fan Festival in Washington Depot, Connecticut, casting director Jami Rudofsky revealed that Gosling once auditioned for a small role on the beloved comedy-drama series. Apparently, she brought him in after previously casting him in an independent film and thinking he was "amazing" (in spite of the fact that he showed up late to his tryout).

Sadly, her "Gilmore Girls" colleagues didn't agree. When he came in to audition for a role as "a football character," the others weren't impressed.

"Everyone was like, 'Really, Jami?'" she said, according to Vulture.

Obviously, Rudofsky was onto something, though. Gosling went on to become an Academy Award nominee and has appeared in films like "The Big Short," "Drive," and the upcoming "Blade Runner 2049."

We won't waste too much energy lamenting what could have been. The actor didn't need "Gilmore Girls" to steal our hearts -- and besides, there's enough rivalry among the show's fans without "Team Football Character" having been thrown into the mix.

You Weren't Alone in Your 'Walking Dead' Season 7 Premiere Tears

Posted:

We were warned that we'd need tissues for the "Walking Dead" Season 7 premiere, and it was not an exaggeration. In fact, the return episode was so brutal that it was responsible for a huge majority of the "crying" responses to TV on Twitter Sunday.

*There are spoilers ahead from "The Walking Dead" Season 7, Episode 1.*

The premiere episode finally answered the question of who fell victim to Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and his baseball bat, Lucille, and as the Twitter response shows, it was a serious blow to fans as well. The language analytics firm Canvs analyzed nearly 1.7 million "Walking Dead"-related tweets gathered by Nielsen, and more than one-third (34.2 percent, to be exact) expressed emotion of some kind.

Not surprisingly, many of the sentiments shared were negative -- about two-thirds, in fact. Among them were "crazy" (22.2 percent), "dislike" (14.4 percent), "hate" (11.1 percent), "sad" (7.8 percent), "upset" (7.1 percent), and "crying" (3.6 percent). The "Walking Dead" stages of grief, ladies and gentleman.

Apparently, "crying" isn't usually a common response when Canvs analyzes Twitter TV reactions; however, "The Walking Dead" elicited most of Sunday's. All told, the show inspired a whopping 77 percent of them.

Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) and Glenn (Steven Yeun) were both big losses, but the Canvs analysis seems to show that Glenn's was harder to take. As you can imagine, there was a spike in negative reactions when the long-standing character met his untimely end. See? You weren't the only one whose tears just kept coming.

Lady Gaga's 'Carpool Karaoke' Date Is Set, So Get Ready

Posted:

Tony Bennett 90th Birthday - Red CarpetDrop the poker face and get excited, Little Monsters! We'll soon see Lady Gaga riding shotgun with "Late Late Show" host James Corden.

The singer-slash-actress is slated to appear in an upcoming "Carpool Karaoke" segment on the late-night talk show, and the air date has finally been announced. Fortunately, we don't have to wait long to catch Gaga singing along with Corden; the Mother Monster-starring segment will be included in the Oct. 25 episode.

"Carpool Karaoke" has become massively popular since 2015, and Lady Gaga's appearance will definitely be one to watch. The pop icon and "American Horror Story" star just dropped her fifth studio album, so she has new tunes she could belt out and numerous earlier hits to revisit. Whatever she sings, we can count on her spectacular talent, plus Corden's enthusiastic vocals as a bonus.

"The Late Late Show with James Corden" airs weeknights at 12:37 a.m. ET on CBS. If that's too late for you, you can find it later on YouTube.

Original Batman Adam West Wants to Cameo in Ben Affleck's 'The Batman'

Posted:

2016 New York Comic Con - Day 1We still don't know too much about "The Batman," Ben Affleck's upcoming standalone flick in the burgeoning DC film universe. But one former Caped Crusader has a genius idea for a cameo that could give Marvel's constant Stan Lee appearances a run for their money.

In an interview with ComicBook.com, Adam West -- who originated the role of Batman in the campy '60s series and movies -- admitted that he has no desire to reprise the character that made him famous. But that doesn't mean that he wouldn't want to participate in the DC film slate in some other form.

West suggested a way he could cameo -- in "The Batman" or another movie featuring Affleck's version of the hero -- that would certainly fit in with DC director/producer Zack Synder's penchant for dream sequences (which figured heavily in this year's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice"). Here's how he explained his ethereal idea to ComicBook.com:

" ... [I]t would be wonderful to play Bruce Wayne's father coming back. You know he was murdered, but coming back one dark and stormy lightning-riven night through a library window. Bruce Wayne is there thinking, 'I'll never solve this. This is the most difficult thing in my life.' In comes old dad, like a bat, almost."

Batman's parents' death is one of the driving forces for the character in just about every single adaptation of the classic DC tale, so focusing so heavily on Thomas Wayne would be a natural progression for this new slate of films. And as West points out, a cameo from the original Batman would certainly "blow their minds out in the audience." We're definitely on board. Give him a call, Batfleck.

"The Batman" begins production early next year. It's tentatively due in theaters sometime in 2018.

These 'Fuller House' Season 2 Photos Will Get You in the Holiday Spirit

Posted:

The second season of "Fuller House" is debuting in the middle of the holiday season, so it makes sense that the show will celebrate quite a few holidays throughout its run. Now, fans have their first look at some of the extended Fuller and Tanner clans' many seasonal plans.

On Monday, the official "Fuller House" social media accounts debuted five new images from the upcoming season, featuring the cast celebrating Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. And it looks like the sophomore outing will be just as wacky -- and sentimental -- as the first season.

In the Halloween image, Kimmy (Andrea Barber) is dressed as Lucille Ball, while her ex Fernando (Juan Pablo Di Pace) plays the part of Lucy's husband, Desi Arnaz. For Thanksgiving, fans of "Full House" will be happy to see some familiar faces from the original cast, with Danny (Bob Saget), Uncle Jesse (John Stamos), Aunt Becky (Lori Loughlin), and Uncle Joey (Dave Coulier) all present at the dinner table. The trio of guys later share a toast in the backyard (under the watchful eye of Joey's puppet pal Mr. Woodchuck).

Hear Dwayne Johnson's Maui Sing in New 'Moana' Clip

Posted:

Disney's latest animated musical, "Moana," is set to hit theaters next month, and a new clip featuring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's character, demigod Maui, singing his breakout tune is sure to make audiences even more eager to see the flick.

Johnson debuted the song on his Instagram account, where he revealed that he collaborated on the track with none other than "Hamilton" mastermind Lin-Manuel Miranda (who's co-writing the movie's songs along with composer Mark Mancina and Pacific songwriter Opetaia Foa'i). According to Entertainment Weekly, it's the first song Maui sings in the movie, as he introduces himself to Moana (voiced by newcomer Auli'i Cravalho), and as the name of the track ("You're Welcome") implies, the demigod is all too happy to explain to the young woman why she should be grateful for his help.

The tune serves two main purposes, both helping to fill in some backstory for the character, while also setting up his and Moana's dynamic going forward: The South Pacific princess is skeptical of the demigod's bluster, to say the least, and can more than hold her own alongside his formidable presence. And it helps that the song already seems to fit in so well alongside other classics from the Disney vault, catchy and humorous in equal measure.

Based on this first listen, we're excited to hear more from the "Moana" songwriting team. The flick hits theaters on November 23.

Tom Cruise Gives an Update on 'Top Gun 2': 'We're Trying to Figure It Out'

Posted:

'Jack Reacher: Never Go Back' Berlin Premiere; Berlin PremiereMore than 30 years after it first hit theaters, "Top Gun" still doesn't have a sequel. While there's been talk over the past few years of finally making "Top Gun 2" a reality, no concrete plans for the follow-up have materialized yet. So is the project actually happening, or not?

Star Tom Cruise addressed that question in a recent interview with "The Graham Norton Show," where the host asked him about his meeting with producer Jerry Bruckheimer back in January. Bruckheimer and Cruise shared a photo of themselves smiling together, with the promise that they were talking about "Top Gun 2," though there's been no word about the project since then.

According to the actor, the film isn't exactly a done deal yet -- but it's not dead, either.

"Yes, we're discussing it," Cruise told Norton of the long-awaited sequel. "We're trying to figure it out. ... If we can figure it out, I'd love to work on it."

One of Cruise's stipulations is reportedly that he'd like to do his own stunts, just as he did for the first flick. The actor reminisced about the experience with Norton, though he noted that learning how to fly was also a lesson in learning how not to barf all over the cockpit. Guess moviemaking isn't always so glamorous after all.

The fact that Cruise is talking about the project so openly gives us hope that it may still happen after all. Stay tuned for more intel from the star.

LA Premiere of "Vacation" - Red Carpet

Sorry if this ruins your hope of being the next Mrs. Hemsworth, but it turns out the real-life Thor is not looking for a new wife.

Chris Hemsworth and Spanish model/actress Elsa Pataky ("Fast & Furious") responded to their recent tabloid treatment in two new Instagram posts. A story in Australia's Woman's Day Magazine had alleged they were "taking a little break from each other" after being married for about six years and having two children. Well, that was news to Hemsworth, who posted this cheeky photo with Pataky:

Haha. Yes, your honey still loves you. To prove it publicly, and further put the trouble-in-paradise rumors to rest, Pataky shared her own photo:

'Westworld' Star Is 'Just Flattered' by Man in Black Theory

Posted:

Jimmi Simpson can neither confirm nor deny the popular "Westworld" theory out there about the Man in Black. You've probably heard the theory -- that Simpson's character, William, is a younger version of Ed Harris's Man in Black, and their scenes are from different timelines.

Simpson talked to The Hollywood Reporter after Episode 4, and they openly asked him about the theory. Here's part of their great Q&A:

THR: By now, you must have heard about the theories that William is a younger version of the Man in Black.

Jimmi Simpson: Oh, yeah.

THR: What's your take on the theory?

Simpson: First of all, I'm just flattered, because that man is so badass. (Laughs.) Second of all, I can't comment on anything. I wish I could say how wrong or right you are, but you guys have to wait just like we did.

THR: You wouldn't want to shut down the theorizing, anyway.

Simpson: Exactly. Bring it on, because we literally all did this every time we got a script: "Oh my god! This is happening! She's this, and she's not this!" Then we were generally wrong, but sometimes, we were a shade right, and you would feel like a genius for somehow figuring out Jonah and Lisa's brilliant puzzle.

Jonah and Lisa are showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. They, too, addressed fan theories and different timelines in a post-episode Q&A with Entertainment Weekly.

EW: Should we not assume that everything seeing is taking place at the same time...?

Jonathan Nolan: I think you want to assume as little as possible when watching this show. [...] Part of the fun is people speculating about what they're are seeing. There's some amazing speculation out there. There are some theories that are so elaborate and beautiful that you wish you thought of them yourself. I think we want to burden the audience as little as possible with expectations of what we think the show is. I'm a big believer in this ever since we went to the Venice Film Festival with 'Memento.' My brother [director Christopher Nolan] gave an interview about what he thought the film meant but stressed it was ambiguous. And afterward we talked about it and I felt from then on that the best thing to do is get out of the way of the audience and let them play with it. And there are some things in 'Westworld' that are intentionally ambiguous.

OK. Well. Then. As members of the audience, we have decided there are multiple timelines and William is indeed the young Man in Black. So far, it fits well enough. Maybe it won't fit next week, but that's another issue. Speaking of next week, Evan Rachel Wood (Dolores) and Ben Barnes (Logan) teased something noteworthy ahead in Episode 5.

Tom Hanks Almost Wins 'Black Jeopardy' in Unifying SNL Sketch

Posted:

Tom Hanks made "Saturday Night Live" great again.

October 22 marked his ninth time hosting the NBC show, and that experienced showed. You can tell SNL trusts a host when they allow him or her a role in the cold open, and Hanks was part of the third debate sketch as Chris Wallace. He was more of the straight-man than the comic relief in that bit, but showcased his talents throughout the night -- especially as David Pumpkins in the Haunted Elevator sketch, which would not have been anywhere near that funny without Hanks. (Any questions?)

But one of the strongest bits of the night was "Black Jeopardy," including Hanks as Donald Trump supporter Doug, competing against Keeley (Sasheer Zamata) and Shanice (Leslie Jones) -- with host Darnell Hayes (Kenan Thompson) initially confused about how Doug ended up on this show. However, instead of mocking the Trump supporter, SNL chose to illustrate how Americans have more similarities than differences, with Doug turning out to be a natural at "Black Jeopardy" ... at least until the end.

Doug had all the right answers on not trusting the government, thumbprints, rigged elections, the Madea movie box set he bought at Walmart ("If I can laugh and pray in 90 minutes, that is money well spent"), local fix-it guys, and even skinny women vs. big girls.

"Big Girls" answer: "Skinny women can do this for you."

Doug: "What is 'Not a damn thing'?"

Darnell, Keeley, and Shanice cheered at that, and Doug added, "My wife, she's a sturdy gal."

But things took a dark turn in Final Jeopardy with the category "Lives That Matter." It was good while it lasted, Doug!

Watch that sketch and a few more from Hanks, including a "Sully" sketch with Alec Baldwin and a new "comedy show" for CBS about depressed professors:Benedict Cumberbatch is next, hosting SNL for the first time on Saturday, November 5.

Emilia Clarke Had the Weirdest 30th Birthday Party on 'Game of Thrones' Set

Posted:

2016 Primetime Emmy Awards - Arrivals

Happy birthday to the Dragon Queen!

Emilia Clarke actually looked more freaked out than thrilled on her 30th birthday, which she appeared to spend on the set of "Game of Thrones" Season 7. Our beloved khaleesi hit the three-decade mark on October 23, and the photo she shared to mark the occasion is as bizarre as Arya's storyline in Season 6. Her caption -- hilarious as usual -- just adds to the randomness:

So we have Dora the Explorer and SpongeBob SquarePants. Are the GoT showrunners -- David Benioff and Dan Weiss -- in those costumes? Where are the spoilers, Jon Snow's mum, and Channing Tatum?

Nathalie Emmanuel shared a more straightforward birthday post for her friend. The actresses have bonded as closely as their characters, Missandei and Daenerys, and seem to be enjoying their time together as they shoot the 2017 season:

Clarke previously teased that Season 7 would be "ridiculous" with another "epic" battle sequence. She also shared a windy set video in Northern Ireland, where she is now shooting, since Dany chose to cross the Narrow Sea and now has to deal with winter instead of the warmth of Meereen. You asked for this, Queen D!

"Game of Thrones" Season 7 premieres summer 2017.

'Deadpool 2' Director Exits After Clash With Ryan Reynolds (Over Kyle Chandler?)

Posted:

Twentieth Century Fox Presentation at 2015 Comic-ConClear eyes, full hearts, can't win?

Over the weekend, the surprising news emerged that "Deadpool" director Tim Miller would not be returning to direct "Deadpool 2." Deadline reported it first, confirming from studio insiders that Miller's "exit was over mutual creative differences" with star/producer Ryan Reynolds, in one instance over the potential casting of Kyle Chandler as Cable. Deadline said the split was amicable, though, and Miller is still high on Fox's list of directors for future projects.

Miller didn't have an official deal for the sequel, but he was developing the script. TheWrap added more details on (allegedly) what creative differences came to a head. They claim Miller and Reynolds hadn't spoken for a while and had a pretty contentious relationship, not that "amicable" at all. Part of the tension reportedly came from Reynolds's agents renegotiating his deal, with more money, casting approval, and creative controls for "Deadpool 2." That's understandable, but it slowed down the process and brought to light their differences in approaching the sequel.

LA Premiere of Season Two "Bloodline" - ArrivalsMiller, TheWrap claims, wanted a more stylized sequel and Reynolds wanted to focus on more of the raunchy comedy. "Friday Night Lights" and "Bloodline" star Kyle Chandler was also reportedly a source of conflict, since Miller is said to have wanted him to play Cable, but Reynolds did not, and the studio ultimately backed Reynolds.

It's sad to see Miller leave this franchise, after such a breakout hit in the 2016 film. But if the star and director couldn't make it work as a team, then it's not too shocking that Fox would stick with Reynolds -- he is literally the face behind the character, and he is still keeping up a brilliant marking campaign on Twitter throughout the year. He is irreplaceable. Unfortunately, we now know his "Deadpool" directors are not. So who is next? Many fans hope "Ant-Man" and "Hot Fuzz" director Edgar Wright will step in, but we'll have to wait and see.

And we still love you, Kyle Chandler. Don't let the Merc With a Mouth get you down.

11 Things We Learned at the 'Doctor Strange' Press Conference

Posted:

"Doctor Strange" checks off all the boxes one would expect from a Marvel movie.

But it also gives you at least two big action set pieces that you've never seen before and some of the most unique visuals (read: trippy) ever put in a movie -- comic book or otherwise.

The cast and filmmakers behind your latest Marvel addiction seemed very proud of their work at a recent press conference for the film in Los Angeles. Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton, Rachel McAdams, director Scott Derrickson, and producer/Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige were among those on hand to discuss how they brought the Sorcerer Supreme to the big screen. Here are the highlights:
1. When Cumberbatch seemed unavailable for the role due to scheduling, Derrickson met with other actors, but the filmmaker said he "still went back to Benedict. That was the guy, that was Strange."

2. The filmmakers soon realized that hitting a summer release date was not going to work if they wanted Cumberbatch in the lead role. So, to accommodate their casting needs and the actor's schedule, they pushed the film to a Fall slot. That's how you know you're a big deal as an actor, folks, when Marvel/Disney rearranges their calendar to service yours.
3. What convinced Mads Mikkelsen to play villain Kaecilius? Kung-fu. When the director pitched the film to the actor over the phone, roughly five to ten minutes in, Derrickson dropped "and there's a lot of kung-fu and flying." Since the actor grew up watching old-school kung-fu films, that's all he needed to hear to be sold on the role. "I said 'whoa whoa, what? Kung-fu?' I'm in," Mikkelsen recalled.

4. The primary source of inspiration for Derrickson's unique visual choices were the "early '60s Stan Lee and Steve Ditko comics," with emphasis on the more psychedelic imagery. 5. When it came to the action scenes and set pieces, the studio fully committed to a line in Derrickson's initial pitch to Marvel: "The goal is for every set piece in this movie to be the weirdest set piece in any other movie."

6. To that end, the director worked hard with his team to "get more creative" with set pieces that involved mass destruction. "The movies that do that are memorable," Derrickson said, "and change the way you feel about cinema." While the filmmaker was modest, saying he is unsure if they achieved that with "Strange," he is confident that the film offers sequences that "give audiences their money's worth."
7. Those unique hand gestures the Ancient One and Strange use in the movie? It's called finger tutting, and yes, the actors were trained on how to do it properly. "We had a specialist show us," Swinton said. "He taught us a series of extraordinary and very precise movements."

The Oscar-winner also recalled that, at times, she struggled with the precision of the movements -- making sure her fingers didn't pass in front of her face in a certain way that would negate the reason for the move at all.

8. When Cumberbatch first put on the costume, he behaved much like you would by geeking out. "Was giddy like a child," the actor said. When a costume designer saw Cumberbatch seeing himself for the first time in the full outfit, she she remarked: "Oh, you're having a superhero moment, aren't you?"
9. That wasn't the only time the notion of playing the Marvel hero really hit home for the actor. On the last day of shooting -- while they were near-ready to shoot a scene on the blocked-off streets of New York City -- Cumberbatch noticed they were near a comic book shop.

So, with his phone, the director filmed his star entering the shop on a whim. And in full Strange attire -- the cloak, the hair, everything. Cumberbatch recalled that after he first introduced himself to the owner and the few patrons inside, they couldn't believe he was there buying Doctor Strange comics.

10. Actually, he didn't have any money on him. Because wearing costume. "So I offered to work it off [in the store] or something in exchange for payment," Cumberbatch said. "And the owner was like, he said something like: 'Fine, but you have to keep your American accent if you wanna work there.'"
11. Everyone knows that Strange will appear in "Avengers: Infinity War." And now we know when the actor reports for shooting. "Early next year," Feige revealed to reporters.

"Doctor Strange" hits theaters Nov. 4.

Traumatized 'Walking Dead' Fans Call in Sick Over Season 7 Premiere Deaths

Posted:

You OK? "The Walking Dead" fans waited almost seven months for answers from the Season 6 finale, and what they got in the Season 7 premiere led many to (half-jokingly) say they needed time off from school or work to grieve for TWD Family members.

*Spoilers ahead from the Season 7 premiere*

Season 7, Episode 1 had a double dose of death; a pregnant woman losing the father of her child; and a father almost chopping off the arm of his son. Plus, Daryl got kidnapped. It was a rough hour, followed by 90 minutes of rain on "Talking Dead."

#TheWalkingDead was already trending before the premiere started and -- honestly -- there was some slight relief out there when it looked like Abraham might be Negan's only victim. No disrespect to the sonofad*ck but he's not an Atlanta 5 Original. However, after Daryl lost his temper and punched Negan, Negan decided to retaliate in his way -- he stole Daryl ("he's mine now") for his own group (presumably taking him back to the Saviors's base, called the Sanctuary) and bashed Glenn to death as punishment. So Glenn got a version of his comic book death, but with a "remix" to account for Daryl, who is not even in the comics.

Fans obviously lost it at that point, and things only got darker when Rick was forced to cut off Carl's arm, and only stopped because Negan wanted to break him to the point of begging. It worked. Also, The Powers That Be cruelly gave us a window into a future that never-was, with Glenn holding his and Maggie's baby. Heartbreaking!

Many fans tweeted their depression and tears, which shows how invested fans still are after seven seasons of main character deaths:

And the season has only just begun! We'll have to stay tuned for ratings numbers, but the premiere probably did quite well; hopefully The Powers That Be don't take that as a sign that they should keep torturing fans with cliffhangers and kills. Give us a light at the end of the tunnel!

TV Worth Watching

"Modern Family" (Wednesday on ABC at 9 p.m.)Yes, it's that spooktacular time of year when every show has a special Halloween episode. You can read a full lineup of which shows are dressing up for the occasion, but keep an eye on ABC's "Modern Family" and NBC's "Superstore" to do the job right. The October 26 "Modern Family" episode is called "Halloween 4: The Revenge of Rod Skyhook," and it seems to have a superhero theme, with Cameron and Mitchell dressed as Batman and Robin (and Sofia Vergara's Gloria as Wonder Woman). Over on "Superstore" the October 27 "Employee Theft" episode has Dina (Lauren Ash) launching a store-wide investigation after an apparent theft, throwing a wrench in everyone's Halloween plans.

"Tracey Ullman's Show" (Friday on HBO at 11 p.m.)
"One comedian, countless characters. Discover the many faces of Tracey Ullman." Start your discovery with this HBO preview, which includes Ullman as "National Treasure" Dame Judi Dench, who secretly likes to key cars (knew it):"Years of Living Dangerously: A Race Against Time" (Sunday on National Geographic Channel at 8 p.m.)
Season 2 of National Geographic Channel's Emmy award-winning documentary series premieres October 30 before moving to its regular timeslot Wednesdays at 10 p.m., starting November 2.
In his first TV project since retiring from "The Late Show," David Letterman travels to India to find out what the world's soon-to-be most populous country is going to do to expand its inadequate energy grid. Meanwhile, "Saturday Night Live" cast member Cecily Strong travels to Florida and Nevada to investigate what's blocking the growth of solar energy in the U.S. More Season 2 correspondents include Jack Black, Gisele Bündchen, Ty Burrell, Don Cheadle, America Ferrera, Thomas Friedman, Joshua Jackson, David Letterman, Aasif Mandvi, Nikki Reed, executive producer Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ian Somerhalder, Cecily Strong, Sigourney Weaver, and Bradley Whitford.

"The Great Indoors" (Thursday on CBS at 8:30 p.m.)
CBS just can't get enough of Gen X vs. Millennials. That's the theme of the current (really good) season of "Survivor" and also the theme of Joel McHale's new sitcom. He plays Jack, who usually travels the world for Outdoor Limits, but gets a new assignment from the magazine's owner (played by Stephen Fry), keeping him chained to a desk supervising a team of millennial writers at the now web-only publication. It's such a cliché for each older generation to mock the younger, so hopefully the strong cast -- which also includes Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Christine Ko -- can rise above the stereotypes.
