The Last Horror Blog: 'Altar' and 'Baskin' Trailers, Heather Langenkamp's Big Surprise and More

Posted: 18 Feb 2016 10:00 PM PST

Heather Langenkamp takes on Pinhead? – Nightmare on Elm Street star Heather Langenkamp has set the Internet horror community ablaze after revealing that she’s set to shoot scenes in the newest Hellraiser movie next week. This is big on a number of levels – the biggest being that it appears to mean that Dimension is rushing what is sure to be another awful sequel into production in order to retain the rights to the franchise. While there have been talks of a Hellraiser reboot for years (some involving Clive Barker returning to the fold), nothing has really happened. Dimension’s deal requires a sequel every so many years, so this appears to be a quickie project designed to satisfy that contractual obligation. Langenkamp broke the news in an interview with...

'The Silence of the Lambs' At 25: Why Gene Hackman Dropped Out and Why Thomas Harris Wouldn't Watch It

Posted: 18 Feb 2016 09:00 PM PST

Last weekend was the 25th anniversary of the release of The Silence of the Lambs, a movie that surprised many with its tremendous successes at both the box office and at the Oscars, as well as with its becoming such an iconic and influential work of cinema. A lot of its notoriety then and now is due to the movie's pleasantly terrifying portrayal of cannibalistic serial killer Hannibal Lecter, for which Anthony Hopkins earned one of those Academy Awards.  As much as Hopkins's version is the most famous Lecter, we can't say that it's difficult to see anyone else in the role. After all, Brian Cox played him quite well in the earlier movie Manhunter, and Mads Mikkelsen was really great in the Hannibal TV series. Still, Hopkins's extraordinary...

What 'John Wick 2' and 'Deadpool' Now Have In Common

Posted: 18 Feb 2016 07:30 PM PST

Similar to Deadpool, the first John Wick was this unassuming R-rated action movie starring Keanu Reeves that took the genre world by storm when it debuted at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. Here was this gritty no-holds-barred assassin movie from a couple of first-time directors whose experience running stunts on other major movies (like The Matrix) worked in their favor when it came to delivering a well-choreographed action movie where you could actually see the action. John Wick grossed $86 million worldwide on a $20 million budget, so of course you give that sucker a sequel! And because the first set up this rich mythology featuring a world where the deadliest assassins have this hotel they all hang out at, there's a lot you can do when it comes to more stories... or...

Dwayne Johnson Will Probably Have to Fight Volcanoes In 'San Andreas 2'

Posted: 18 Feb 2016 06:00 PM PST

Disaster movies typically don't get sequels. Granted there are exceptions (Beyond the Poseidon Adventure), but for the most part they just don't happen. There's no Day after The Day After Tomorrow. People would have a hard time buying Dante's Peak destroying a town a second time. The Towering Inferno can only burn down once.  But nobody has told that to Dwayne Johnson and the rest of his team behind the smash hit San Andreas. The movie made a nice chunk of money not just in the U.S., but also around the world. Naturally Warner Bros. would be interested in a sequel and thankfully San Andreas has something going for it that most disaster movies don't: an event that can happen anywhere at any time. THR broke the news that WB is now actively prepping...

'Blade Runner 2,' Starring Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling, Nabs 2018 Release Date

Posted: 18 Feb 2016 04:40 PM PST

One of the most talked-about sequels has just landed a release date... and it's a fascinating one. Blade Runner 2, starring Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling, will officially hit theaters on January 12, 2018. Yes, early January. For a major sequel to an iconic sci-fi classic.  Not in the middle of summer or during the fall for a potential awards campaign. Not even early spring or over the holiday weekend in February where Deadpool just cleaned house at the box office. Nope, they're betting big on January, which just speaks to an evolving trend where bigger movies are spreading out and taking advantage of historically slower periods at the movies in an effort to hopefully own the top spot at the box office for a few weeks. So don't go thinking Blade Runner 2 is a...

Watch the Awesome 'Justice League' Short That Helped Director Tim Miller Land 'Deadpool'

Posted: 18 Feb 2016 03:00 PM PST

Hands down, the best superhero action sequence in this modern cinematic-universe era is the finale of The Avengers. The way director Joss Whedon seamlessly weaves between each hero, connecting them to the scene and to each other is, quite frankly, brilliant. We were immediately reminded of that heroic interplay watching this cinematic short for the role-playing game DC Universe Online. The short, which features the likes of Justice League members Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Superman, the Flash and more, was directed by Tim Miller, who just made his feature directorial debut on the wildly successful Deadpool. In fact, it was this short that first grabbed the attention of folks at 20th Century Fox, who brought Miller in to assist on X-Men: First Class, eventually leading...

Ron Howard Set to Direct Robert Downey Jr. in 'Pinocchio'

Posted: 18 Feb 2016 01:30 PM PST

It's been more than 15 years since filmmaker Ron Howard made a movie that was specifically targeted at a family audience, namely, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. He won two Academy Awards right after that for the terrific drama A Beautiful Mind and since then has concentrated on fare that's more appealing to somewhat older audiences, like The Dilemma, Rush and In the Heart of the Sea. Howard is now sailing back toward a family-friendly adventure. He is attached to direct a new live-action Pinocchio, according to Tracking Board. As you might expect, it's based on The Adventure of Pinocchio, a classic 19th century book by Carlo Collodi about a wooden puppet that comes to life. Robert Downey Jr. will star as Geppetto, the puppet's creator, and is also serving as a...

Movie News: Secret 'Hellraiser' Sequel Now Filming; Live-Action 'Astro Boy' on Its Way

Posted: 18 Feb 2016 12:00 PM PST

Hellraiser 10: A surprise new installment in the Hellraiser horror film series is now in production. Doug Bradley, who appeared in the first eight installments as the fearsome Pinhead (above), says he declined to even read the script because it would require that he sign a legal document preventing him from talking about it. Heather Langenkamp (A Nightmare on Elm Street) says she has a small role in the movie, which  was written and will be directed by Gary Tunnicliffe. [JoBlo/Dread Central]   Catherine the Great: Keira Knightley is in early talks to star as Catherine the Great in an untitled biographical drama that will be directed by Barbra Streisand. Kristina Lauren Anderson wrote the screenplay based on the life of the Russian leader, who ruled from...
