The Sad Clown: A Quick Guide to Appreciating Ben Stiller

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 09:30 PM PST

Is it wrong that I kinda love Ben Stiller? I'm not even that excited for Zoolander 2 and I can count the number of his films that I truly love on only a single hand. Yet I find him so watchable and his decisions so fascinating, even when they lead him (and therefore, me) to a rotten movie. But my affection runs deep. For an actor who has had so many misfires and appeared in so many films I flat-out don't like, I never find myself blaming him or even disliking him. There's more going on with this guy than meets the eye. Since I've put more thought into this than I'd like to admit, I put together a quick five-step guide on learning to like and appreciate the presence of Mr. Stiller. It won't change you mind about Night at the Museum, but maybe it will make...

DVD Obscura: The New Indie and International Movies You Need to Watch

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 08:30 PM PST

New Indie: The Manhattan romantic comedy has become such a cliché that it’s even spawned its own spoof film, the erratic They Came Together. But just when you thought there was no new way to show New Yorkers falling in love, along comes the intelligently outrageous Sleeping With Other People (Paramount Home Entertainment), where two people who hooked up disastrously in college meet up again years later – at a sex-addiction 12-step meeting. That synopsis might sound a little grim, but in the hands of writer-director Leslye Headland (Bachelorette) and with the engaging, charismatic lead performances of Jason Sudeikis and Alison Brie, the results are both credible and hilarious. (And the scene where Sudeikis explains to Brie the mechanics of female self-pleasure...

Trailer Buzz: 'Mother's Day,' 'Criminal' and 'The Huntsman: Winter's War'

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 07:00 PM PST

Welcome to another Thursday filled with trailers. This week we've got movies based on holidays, fairy tales and the familiar idea of government agents confused about the past.    Mother's Day The new holiday-themed ensemble comedy from Garry Marshall (Valentine's Day, New Year's Eve) sells itself pretty easily: if you have or ever had a mom, then Mother's Day is for you. Sure, it will mostly appeal to mothers themselves, including "mr. moms" like a character played by Jason Sudeikis, but it looks like most audiences can relate in some way. The movie also stars Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts, Kate Hudson, Britt Robertson and Margo Martindale and hits theaters a few weeks ahead of its namesake, on April...

The Geek Beat: The 10 Best R-Rated Comic-Book Movies

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 05:30 PM PST

Few characters can effectively pull off the sort of self-awareness, irreverence, and unpredictable ultraviolence that make Deadpool so darn appealing, so it was with no small amount of joy that fans received the news of the film's “R” rating back when Ryan Reynolds delivered it – along with a studio light to the side of Mario Lopez's head – back in April 2015. Now we find ourselves mere hours away from the premiere of Deadpool in all its restricted-audience glory, and we couldn't be happier about reaching the end of the film's seven-year journey to the screen. The imminent arrival of Deadpool got us thinking, though, about the history of “R”-rated comic-book movies in theaters. With studios often shying away from the sort of...

In a future dystopian society where human intimacy is all but outlawed, two kids embark on a journey of forbidden love in the beautifully sweet Equals, starring Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult. No one will make you fall more in love with love itself than director Drake Doremu, whose Equals is his strongest movie since the Sundance-winning Like Crazy. Gorgeous to watch, Equals presents a familiar story of star-crossed lovers but surrounds it with a rich and fascinating mythology. The movie will wash over you like a powerful emotion, and it hits theaters this summer. Watch the trailer below.   Here's our 15-second review from when it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.   A video posted by Erik Davis...

Two Years Later, 'Battlestar Galactica' Starts Over Again

Posted: 11 Feb 2016 01:30 PM PST

Battlestar Galactica ruled the airwaves for science fiction fans as a rather goofy TV show in the late 1970s and then again as a more serious drama on basic cable, running from 2003 through 2009, followed by a prequel series. Ever since then, a big-screen version has been touted, most recently nearly two years ago, when we heard that Jack Paglen (Trandescence) would be writing "a complete reimaging of the story." Now comes word that the project is starting over yet again with three new producers, Michael De Luca (Fifty Shades of Grey, Dracula Untold) and the team of Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark (Ted 2, the upcoming The Free State of Jones). According to The Hollywood Reporter, no writers are currently attached, which would appear to indicate that Paglen's script did...
