'The Mindy Project' Season 4 Will Return to Hulu in April

Posted:

the mindy project, season 4, hulu, midseason premiere, return date, mindy kalingAfter a months-long hiatus, "The Mindy Project" finally has a premiere date for the back half of its fourth season.

Mindy Kaling announced the show's return on social media this week, revealing that "TMP" would finally pick up again on April 12. When last we left Dr. Lahiri (Kaling) back in December, she had returned to her old apartment to measure a spot for baby Leo's crib, prompting speculation that she and babydaddy Danny (Chris Messina) were on the verge of a breakup.

Fans will have been waiting for more than four months to see the resolution to that storyline by the time the show returns, though since "Mindy" received a super-sized 26-episode pickup when it was saved by Hulu (after getting axed by Fox last year), it makes sense that it needed a longer hiatus to fill that order. Production was also complicated by Messina's involvement with Ben Affleck's next directorial effort, "Live By Night," which was shooting in Boston at the same time "Mindy" was filming back in Los Angeles.

We can't wait to see our favorite fictional OB/GYN again soon. Hurry up, April!

Jared Leto's 'Suicide Squad' Gifts 'Terrified' Viola Davis

Posted:

joker, jared leto, suicide squadJared Leto's method approach to his role as the Joker in "Suicide Squad" is already the stuff of legend, and his costar Viola Davis has admitted that the creepy gifts he offered the cast initially "terrified" her -- and then motivated her to put her all into her role.

Davis, who plays government official Amanda Waller (a.k.a. the assembler of the titular band of villains) in the flick, revealed in an interview with Vanity Fair that she was pretty intimidated by Leto's bizarre behavior when rehearsals first began.

"The Joker -- he did some bad things, Jared Leto did," Davis recalled of early days on the "Suicide" set. "He gave some really horrific gifts. He had a henchman who came into the rehearsal room ... with a dead pig and plopped it on the table, and then he walked out. And that was our introduction to Jared Leto."

Naturally, Davis said, this made her a little uneasy.

"Now, I'm terrified, just as a person, thinking, 'Is he crazy?'" the actress recalled. "But the second part was, 'Oh, s--t, I've gotta have my stuff together.' You talk about commitment, and then he sends Margot Robbie a black rat. It was still alive, in a box. She screamed. And then she kept it."

Sounds like Leto definitely has the whole twisted thing down. We can't wait to see him, Davis, and the rest of the skwad in action.

"Suicide Squad" hits theaters on August 5.

The Oscars Statuette Is Getting a Makeover, Its First in Over 30 Years

Posted:

the academy, academy awards, oscars, oscar, statuette, statue, polich tallixThe Oscar statuette is the most iconic trophy in entertainment, and its classic look will soon get a (minor) makeover: The Academy announced this week that it will use a new manufacturer for the award starting this year, its first switch since 1982.

The coveted title of Oscar creator has now been bestowed upon Polich Tallix Fine Art Foundry, a company based in Rock Tavern, New York. Former manufacturer R.S. Owens & Company will continue to service and restore older statuettes, as well as create other awards and for The Academy (including the plaques handed out for the Scientific and Technical Awards).

According to The Academy, Polich Tallix based its slightly-updated design on the very first Oscar statuettes, using a bronze Oscar cast from 1929. The new trophy now boasts "restored subtle features of George Stanley's original sculpture, which was based on sketches by MGM art director Cedric Gibbons, " per The Academy, while "the overall size of the statuette remains the same."

Here's the breakdown of Polich Tallix's painstaking process, which begins with a digital scan of the 1929 form and a 3D-printed model that's then cast in wax:

Each wax statuette is coated in a ceramic shell that is cured and fired at 1,600°F, melting the wax away and leaving an empty Oscar-shaped form. The statuettes are then cast in liquid bronze at more than 1,800°F, cooled, and sanded to a mirror polish finish.

The figure portion of each Oscar is electroplated with a permanent layer of reflective 24-karat gold by Epner Technology, a renowned high-tech specification electroplating company in Brooklyn. The statuette's bronze base receives a smooth black patina, which is hand-buffed to a satin finish.

All told, it takes about three months for Polich Tallix to create 50 Oscars. Here are some behind-the-scenes photos The Academy shared on Twitter:
The company will be ready for its closeup when the 88th annual Academy Awards are handed out on February 28.

'Wolverine 3' May Be the Next R-Rated Comic Book Movie

Posted:

After the jaw-dropping, record-breaking success of "Deadpool," studios are clamoring for their own R-rated takes on the superhero genre. But it looks like Fox will beat everyone else to the punch once again with the next "Wolverine" film, which is also reportedly circling an R rating.

The news comes from the annual Toy Fair, which took place in New York City last weekend. An Imgur user spotted a brochure touting the upcoming release -- which looks like it's working with the title "The Wolverine III" for now -- and noticed that under "Anticipated Rating," Fox gave the flick an R.
View post on imgur.com

As Screen Crush points out, it's not an entirely surprising decision, given that Wolverine -- played by Hugh Jackman in the ongoing series of films -- is prone to darkness, particularly with his past history of dropping F-bombs and killing mercenaries. The site also points to an interview with MTV that Jackman did way back in 2011, when he was shooting 2013's "The Wolverine" with director James Mangold, talking about the possibility of taking the character in an edgier direction.

"There's such great temptation to make an R-rated 'Wolverine.' I've always felt that, and I know a lot of fans would like that," Jackman told MTV at the time. "If there's ever going to be a superhero that is going to be R-rated, it's going to be Wolverine."

Of course, we all know now that "Deadpool" beat Jackman and co. to the punch, though it's interesting that the former character first popped up in the latter's "X-Men: Origins" flick, and they're both now gunning for R-rated greatness. We'll have to wait and see if this tentative rating pans out for the "Wolverine" franchise, but it's certainly an intriguing prospect.

"The Wolverine III" is currently slated for release in March 2017.

Idris Elba Goes Full Action-Hero in 'Bastille Day' Trailer

Posted:

Bastille DayAs if we need further proof that Idris Elba would make a fine James Bond, here he is kicking ass and taking names in the new trailer for "Bastille Day."

He plays a CIA agent in Paris who recruits a young pickpocket (Richard Madden, aka Robb Stark from Game of Thrones) who gets mixed up in a dangerous conspiracy after inadvertently lifting a bag containing more than a wallet. They embark on a mission to uncover corruption, all in the midst of protests on Bastille Day.
Elba has already proven he can shoot guns and punch bad guys, and look really good doing it. That, and the glint of sardonic humor he shows, is exactly why so many fans want him to be the next 007 after Daniel Craig. He and Madden seem to work well together, and as a buddy cop-type action thriller, "Bastille Day" looks like heart-pumping fun.

The movie opens in the U.K. on April 22, but has no U.S. release date yet.

'Pee-wee's Big Holiday' Trailer Is an Adventure Started by Joe Manganiello

Posted:

Pee-wee's Big Holiday"You know I don't want to go anywhere or try anything new!" Pee-wee Herman (Paul Reubens) declares in the trailer for his new Netflix movie, "Pee-wee's Big Holiday." Well, Joe Manganiello has something to say about that.

The "Magic Mike" star plays a super cool, motorcycle-riding, chocolate milkshake-drinking guy who blows into town and challenges Pee-wee to leave it. "You have a choice to make: Stick around here or live a little." Pee-wee decides to live a little, and embarks on an epic road trip, filled with zany misadventures and colorful characters.
It's been nearly 30 years since the last Pee-wee movie, and director John Lee has said that this one has "very little plot," which is for the best. It's more about seeing how Pee-wee interacts with new environments, like New York City, Amish country, and the woods, and with the variety of people he meets along the way.

"Pee-wee's Big Holiday" is available to stream March 18 on Netflix.
