The Last Sci-Fi Blog: Why 'Creative Control' is This Year's 'Her'

Posted: 26 Mar 2015 11:00 PM PDT

When I sat down to watch Creative Control at this year's SXSW Film Festival, I found myself in the best possible position to appreciate its bleak vision of the near-future and its cynical view of technology. For the previous five days, I had been splitting my time between SXSW Film and SXSW Interactive, where entrepreneurs, technologists and everyone in-between attends panels, shares ideas and desperately tries to convince you to download their app. Seriously, if I had a nickel for every flyer or business card imploring me to download a mobile application with a name lacking in vowels, I would be able to buy a decent sandwich from a modest fast food restaurant. I like SXSW Interactive. Truly. I like having the chance to hear experts speak on the future of the business. I...

Comics on Film: Ranking the Different Versions of Lex Luthor We've Seen So Far

Posted: 26 Mar 2015 08:45 PM PDT

In the wide and diverse pantheon of comic book supervillains, there are few with as much interpretive room and staying power as Lex Luthor. Much like his nemesis Superman, who innovated the superhero itself back in 1938, Lex Luthor has proven to be the foundation upon which hundreds of other comic book supervillains are at least partially based. First appearing in April 1940's Action Comics #23, Luthor's most singularly defining characteristic has always been his brilliance. Whether you're looking at the Golden Age version that largely served as a mad scientist, to the career criminal of the 1970's, all the way down to the cunning corporate mogul of the 1990's and 2000's, the shade of Luthor's evil has always evolved with the times in which...

The Director of 'It Follows' Talks Inspiration, Easter Eggs, Modern Horror and More

Posted: 26 Mar 2015 07:30 PM PDT

A funny thing recently happened to It Follows, the best American horror movie in recent memory. It opened in a small handful of theaters around the US on March 13, with a plan that it would then expand to VOD platforms not long after that, as is often the case with indie horror movies these days. But the response to the movie was so strong at the few theaters it did play in, distributor Radius-TWC decided to push back those VOD plans and give the movie a wide release starting tomorrow, March 27. This is great, great news because as much as we are fans of embracing VOD release plans, It Follows is a movie best seen on the big screen. This isn't like other, modern horror movies. It's not found footage. The camera doesn't constantly shake. This is a smart, crackling...

Watch a Supercut That Reminds Us How Important Dance Is to Movies

Posted: 26 Mar 2015 06:15 PM PDT

There are so many dance sequence in movies that to make a supercut of them would seem to be a daunting task. Certainly there will be some favorites left on the cutting room floor. But it needn't be about including the best or most famous numbers. To celebrate dance in cinema is to celebrate cinema itself. Tossing in a dance sequence in any number of movies has proven to be an interruptive measure meant to make the audience happy. There's a great power in dance scenes that relates to the power of movies as a whole -- they affect us. One thing that I thought of recently upon hearing about the dance sequence in Ex Machina is that dance transcends genre. It's long been associated with the musical, but that's not fair. Dance can be just as much associated with sci-fi...

'Friday the 13th' Turns to 'Hannibal' For Inspiration

Posted: 26 Mar 2015 04:30 PM PDT

The Friday the 13th franchise is one of the best franchises around, primarily because it's also one of the most simple (not counting some of the convoluted story stuff the sequels introduce and then abandon). All you need to do is get some teenagers together in one location, and have a big dude with a hockey mask and a machete show up to ruin their good time. It is, on the surface, not that complicated. Below the surface, however, it must be much more complicated because we're going on six years now since the last Friday the 13th and Platinum Dunes has still not fully committed to doing a sequel. They've taken a big step forward this week, though, by hiring Nick Antosca to write the screenplay. He's part of the writing team behind the fantastic TV show...

'X-Men: Apocalypse' Has Found its New Jubilee

Posted: 26 Mar 2015 03:00 PM PDT

The X-Men movie franchise doesn't exactly have a spotless track record when it comes to keeping track of its own internal continuity. And the explanation for that is pretty simple. Back when the first movie hit theaters in 2000, Bryan Singer and everyone else involved had no idea that superhero movies were going to become the interconnected monsters that they are today. They had no plan for who or what would be in their movies nearly two decades later, so they just made it up as they went along. That's why when X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters on May 27, 2016, it'll have a different actress playing the mutant Jubilee than the one we first glimpsed at Professor X's school in X-Men. In fact this will be the third actress to play Jubilee on the big screen, following...
