Comedy Movies at SXSW: Who Might Become the Next Breakout Star

Posted: 20 Mar 2015 09:00 PM PDT

Amy Schumer Nick Kroll Danny Cho Comedies dominated SXSW’s studio premieres this year, with Get Hard, Spy, and a not-quite-finished cut of Trainwreck all making their first appearances at the festival. In the small venues, away from the red carpet of Austin’s historic Paramount Theater, festival-goers got their laughs from indie films, some with familiar faces and some with names we were hearing for the very first time. Past SXSW programming built an audience for then-unknowns like Lena Dunham and Danny McBride, so we always keep a lookout at SXSW for who might be the next breakout comedy star. The most obvious candidate is Amy Schumer, whose Comedy Central television show has expanded her audience beyond...

'Moonwalkers' and Life After 'Harry Potter' for Rupert Grint

Posted: 20 Mar 2015 08:00 PM PDT

Daniel Radcliffe has transitioned successfully from leading boy to leading man with films like The Woman in Black and Kill Your Darlings. Emma Watson has focused on working with interesting directors like Sophia Coppola and Darren Aronofsky. So, that accounts for two of the three leads from the Harry Potter film franchise, but where’s Rupert Grint? We’ve spotted him at SXSW! He’s starring in the new comedy Moonwalkers, a drug-fueled, hyper-violent, swinging-sixties story of CIA agent Kidman (played by Ron Perlman), deeply troubled by visions of those he’s killed in foreign wars, who’s sent across the pond to solicit the assistance of Stanley Kubrick to fake the moon landing in case the real one goes awry. Inept hustler Jonny (Grint, feeling 100...

How 9/11 Led to 'Mad Max: Fury Road' Replacing Mel Gibson

Posted: 20 Mar 2015 07:00 PM PDT

The iconic road warrior known as Mad Max finally returns to theaters this May in the form of Mad Max: Fury Road, and while it could seem that 30 years later Hollywood is simply trying to cash in on nostalgia and the popularity of the Fast and Furious movies, that's definitely not the truth as far as the heart of this reboot is concerned. In fact, it's not even a reboot so much as it's a re-cast sequel. George Miller is back for his fourth installment of the series, and he's been working on the movie for more than a decade. As he told Quint of Ain't It Cool News this week following a special SXSW screening of Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, Fury Road was very close to shooting in 2001 with Mel Gibson reprising his title role. And then 9/11...

Jason Voorhees and the Predator are Joining the Next 'Mortal Kombat'

Posted: 20 Mar 2015 03:30 PM PDT

Back in the day movie characters used to have fun little cameos in other movie franchises (remember a certain Ghostbuster at the end of Casper?), but thanks to every studio putting all of their characters on lockdown within their own worlds, crossovers are an endangered species on the big screen. They do still happen all the time on the small screen, though.  There's been an entire series of games based on Alien vs Predator. Darth Vader and Yoda were both playable characters in Soul Calibur IV. Michael Myers popped up in a horror-themed expansion to Call of Duty: Ghosts. Freddy Krueger sliced and diced in Mortal Kombat a few years ago. And now that last franchise is turning to some of Krueger's peers for a new game. Both Jason Voorhees and Predator will be...
