Four Geeky Things We Learned from the Pixar Documentary Team at SXSW

Posted: 18 Mar 2015 09:00 PM PDT

Pixar isn't just the most beloved animation studio in the world -- it is one of the most beloved hive of creators on the planet. So when the studio's in-house documentary team sat down for their panel at this year's SXSW, it was standing room only. Erica Milsom, Tony Kaplan, and Debby Coleman are among those charged with taking behind-the-scenes photos, interviewing crew, and crafting special features for home releases. And yes, they had stories to tell. Although the bulk of the panel centered on how Pixar's creative process had rubbed off on them as documentarians, they had their fair share of juicy and entertaining anecdotes about working at one of the coolest places in the entertainment industry. Posted: 18 Mar 2015 07:00 PM PDT

Ever since Drafthouse Films decided to re-release an old 1981 film called Roar, folks have been buzzing. Billed as one of the most dangerous movies ever made, this crazy long-lost experiment -- directed by Noel Marshall and starring Tippi Hedren and Melanie Griffith -- is unlike any movie you've ever seen.  Why? Well, maybe the 100 real-life wild animals (most of them lions) has a little something to do with it. Don't believe us? Here's the trailer.   So what in the world is this movie, where did it come from and when can you see it? While out in Austin during SXSW, we caught up with Drafthouse Films honcho Tim League and grilled him on a movie that's so insane and over-the-top, it's hard to believe it's even real.  Check out what...

See the First Image from Pee-wee Herman's Next Movie, Plus New Plot Details

Posted: 18 Mar 2015 05:30 PM PDT

Fans of Pee-wee Herman and his movies and TV shows have been waiting decades for the image above. That's Paul Reubens back in the suit and bowtie and innocent facial expression for a scene in Pee-wee's Big Holiday. The third feature centered on his iconic character is now shooting and will debut on Netflix in the future. The photo comes from "My Log by Pee-wee Herman," a blog that will chronicle the shoot. That's from the second day of filming, and "Pee-wee" provided this caption, which gives hint of some of the action: "Wow, am I tired! Just finished the second day of filming. Hitchhiked yesterday all day. Got a ride, hitchhiked some more, then got another ride. A lot of traveling in two days!" Before he went back in front of the...

The one thing you probably never expected from a Fast and Furious installment is to get a good cry on. Seriously, there is so much over-the-top action spectacle that it's pretty impossible to feel anything other than, "Oh my god that is SO awesome!" But with the passing of franchise star Paul Walker -- and the way Furious 7 handles it (which we won't spoil) -- you may want to think about packing some tissues when you catch the film in theaters beginning April 3. Furious 7 just recently held its first screening in California, where the entire franchise was born. Vin Diesel was on hand to intro the sequel in front of a rowdy, sold-out crowd, and his early enthusiasm soon evolved into this beautiful tribute to Walker. Watch the emotional scene play out...

Watch the First 'Pixels' Trailer: Adam Sandler Wants to Kill Beloved Video Game Characters

Posted: 18 Mar 2015 01:30 PM PDT

Even if you didn't grow up in the 1980s, the first trailer for Pixels is bound to stir nostalgic memories of all the great video games from the first generation of joystick madness. How is that possible? Well, Pac-Man and Donkey Kong quickly became hugely iconic characters, and the games in which they starred were highly influential on the games that followed, inspiring dozens of imitators and hooking just about everybody who played them, whether in an arcade or at home on the new-fangled cartridge game systems. That influence has only grown over the years, even as video games have been increasingly complex and the graphics have developed tremendous and realistic beauty. Back in 2012, Disney's Wreck-It Ralph played off that fond nostalgia with an empathetic look at...
