The Last Sci-Fi Blog: 'Jupiter Ascending,' 'Chappie' and the Odd State of Original Science Fiction

Posted: 13 Mar 2015 12:00 AM PDT

We are two-and-a-half months into the year and things are already looking a little rough for fans of original science fiction at the movies. Truthfully, 2015 was always going to have a hard time living up to the embarrassment of riches that was 2014, but the critical and commercial failures of Jupiter Ascending and Chappie are disheartening. Even if you don't like either film (and the reactions to both have been very mixed), the fact that two original concepts failed so spectacularly should trouble you. This is why we get four Transformers movies and another Spider-Man reboot. What's especially interesting about all of this is that Jupiter Ascending and Chappie have a deeper connection beyond them both being sci-fi flops. These aren't just divisive financial failures...

Comics on Film: Could Valiant Comics Create the Next Great Wave of Superhero Movies?

Posted: 12 Mar 2015 11:00 PM PDT

If you ask any comic book creator how difficult it is to create a superhero in the 21st century, they'll likely tell you that it's very hard. Creating new superheroes, even within the fabled DC and Marvel universes, can be a massive undertaking just because so much of each of those brands is tied up in their biggest icons. How can Nightrunner compete with Superman? How can Penance compete with Spider-Man? Being a part of those publishing houses can certainly be helpful, but not as helpful as you might think. Now imagine trying to create an entirely original character -- and then have them occupy an entirely original universe. As difficult as that is now, it may have been slightly more difficult during the 1990s, but that's exactly what creators Jim...

See another battle, between Princess Leia and LOTR's Galadriel, at Geek Tyrant.   Peter Falk reads Game of Thrones to Fred Savage in this mash-up of the HBO series and The Princess Bride (via Devour):   This whole Jurassic Park-themed set-up, which can used to decorate your home theater or bedroom or baby nursery, is for sale on eBay (via Geekologie):   The latest Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer dubbed by kids is as adorable as it sounds (via Geek Alert):   Kill Bill...

'Hotel Transylvania 2' Trailer Shows How Vampires Learn to Fly

Posted: 12 Mar 2015 08:00 PM PDT

As you grow up, your relationship with animated movies tends to evolve. When you're younger, you watch every single one that comes out. If it's animated, you're seeing it. Then you grow up, and you tend to get a bit pickier, sticking only with those that seem to get rave reviews. And then if you happen to have kids, you go back to the start, only your child finds one that they love and you get stuck watching it over and over and over forever. Usually that makes you hate whatever movie it is (ask most parents what they really think about Frozen), but sometimes it makes you like it even more. For me that was the case with Hotel Transylvania, which told a fun, endearing, and, most importantly, original story with a set of movie monsters that have been shackled to the...

Learn Why 'The Breakfast Club' Cut a Nude Scene and Rick Moranis

Posted: 12 Mar 2015 06:30 PM PDT

Last month was the 30th anniversary of the release of The Breakfast Club, but this month is when we celebrate. A newly restored version of the John Hughes classic is screening at SXSW on Monday with stars Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy in attendance, and Fathom Events is bringing the teen movie to theaters nationwide on March 26 and March 31 accompanied by a bonus retrospective feature that will include new insights from the cast. Meanwhile, we also just learned some little-known details on the making of The Breakfast Club from Vanity Fair, which published an excerpt from Kirk Honeycutt's new book John Hughes: A LIfe in Film. The author goes into two notable cuts to the movie and the reasons they were permanently deleted. One was a locker room scene involving a topless P.E...

'Frozen 2' is Officially Happening

Posted: 12 Mar 2015 05:07 PM PDT

As of yesterday, there were only two movies that have grossed more than $1 billion that were either not sequels themselves or about to get sequels. One was Titanic, the other was Frozen. And now you can cross one of those off the list. Yes, Frozen 2 is officially happening. Disney CEO Bob Iger announced the project today in an investors meeting (the same one that revealed big Star Wars news), and we really only know two things: directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee are developing the film, and Josh Gad will be back as Olaf (he was part of the presentation). No release date yet. No plot info. But if you need your Frozen fix between now and this undated sequel, you can see the short film Frozen Fever in front of Cinderella this weekend.   Follow @PeterSHall...

The First 'Star Wars' Spin-off Gets a Tantalizing Title and 'Episode VIII' Gets a Release Date

Posted: 12 Mar 2015 04:45 PM PDT

We've known for a while now that the first Star Wars spin-off movie would be coming out in 2016 and that it would be directed by Godzilla's Gareth Edwards from a script written by Gary Whitta and Chris Weitz, and that Felicity Jones was the first person cast in it. But now Disney CEO Bob Iger has revealed the title of that movie, which should send fans into a frenzy of speculation: Rogue One. Of course Iger didn't actually spill any plot details, though he did mention it's based on an original idea from Industrial Light and Magic chief creative officer (and Photoshop co-creator) John Knoll, but we can make some assumptions. For starters, the title probably doesn't allude to an individual person who has gone rogue. In the Star Wars universe, Rogue Squadron...

Hoping for a 'Back to the Future' Sequel? This Might Be Better

Posted: 12 Mar 2015 03:00 PM PDT

Of all the older movies currently getting the remake, reboot, prequel or sequel treatment, we're surprised that Back to the Future hasn't yet been called upon to sacrifice itself to the reboot gods. Time travel is hot these days (see: Looper, Hot Tub Time Machine, Project Alamanac), but Back to the Future -- and its subsequent two sequels -- remains untouched, as if the movie overlords have deemed it a historical landmark or something. But those of you itching for more Back to the Future or new Back to the Future may actually get your wish... kind of. Yes, there's a musical that might be in the works, but long before that ever takes serious shape we have news that Back to the Future composer Alan Silvestri has added 15 minutes of new music to his iconic score for a...
