The Last Horror Blog: The Best Movies About Bringing Back the Dead

Posted: 19 Feb 2015 11:00 PM PST

If horror movies have taught us anything (and I’m a firm believer that they’ve taught us many things) it’s that it’s never a good idea for man to play God. Despite what Captain James T. Kirk says about space in the opening of the original Star Trek series, death is really the final frontier. Horror cinema has long been fascinated with death and dying, and is set to once again explore just that topic in the upcoming chiller The Lazarus Effect. In the new film, opening on February 27, Olivia Wilde and a team of researchers have uncovered a way to bring the dead back to life. However, just as they’re about to make their findings public, the Dean at the university they work for shuts down the project. Undaunted, Wilde and her crew try to re-create the...

Comics on Film: Is It Time for a New Solo 'Hulk' Film?

Posted: 19 Feb 2015 08:00 PM PST

The Marvel cinematic universe is a narrative entity that seems to be getting bigger and more popular with each passing year. It hit the jackpot in 2008 with the casting of Robert Downey Jr. in the original Iron Man film, blew up tremendously with 2012’s superhero team-up film The Avengers, and shocked the world of movies by creating a massive box office hit with 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. One character that hasn’t been able to break into that level of popularity, though – at least on his own – is Bruce Banner, aka the Hulk. The second film in Marvel’s cinematic universe, 2008’s The Incredible Hulk starring Edward Norton and Tim Roth, was only a modest box office success when compared to Iron...

Poster-Crop Quiz: Can You Guess These Movies from the Stars of 'Hot Tub Time Machine 2'?

Posted: 19 Feb 2015 06:30 PM PST

Swimsuit up, readers, it's time for another Poster-Crop Quiz. This week, in honor of Hot Tub Time Machine 2, we're taking a dip in our own time-traveling Jacuzzi. Specifically, we're traveling back through the careers of some of the stars of HTTM2. We gathered 10 posters from the catalogs of the movie's headliners, but then we foolishly dropped them in the hot tub and they got all soggy and fell apart. See if you can identify the posters from their waterlogged remains below. The first person to correctly name all 10 posters in the comment section will receive a shout-out in next week's quiz! Even if you win though, we still recommend bringing a sturdy pair of water wings. It seemed only appropriate to kick things off with a look at the poster for the first Hot...

Watch the Inventive Way a Bunch of Disney Characters Surprised Shoppers at a Mall

Posted: 19 Feb 2015 05:00 PM PST

You never expect something fun and cool to happen at your local mall (save for that time security chased a bunch of trouble making skateboarders through the food court -- that was kinda hilarious), so we were pleasantly surprised to see our favorite Disney characters set up shop right down the road from our New York headquarters with a clever promotion for their "Disney Side" ad campaign, which basically prompts people to share their love of all things Disney while also promoting future Disney vacations. What they did is set up a pop-up shop inside a Long Island mall so that when shoppers walked past the front entrance, they were immediately mirrored by the shadow of a Disney character. Hilarity, of course, ensues. Check it out below. Who knew Mickey Mouse had such...

New 'Mad Max: Fury Road' Trailer Continues to Bring the Awe

Posted: 19 Feb 2015 03:15 PM PST

We've been not-so-quietly freaking out about Mad Max: Fury Road for the past few months thanks to an increasingly amazing trailer campaign for the movie, with each new round of jaw-dropping footage somehow topping the last. It just looks so risky and weird and inventive, which are three words that don't often describe action movies these days, yet alone studio ones with big budgets. A new Japanese trailer has hit online and it once again has our tongues wagging. There's not a massive heaping of new footage in this one -- it's actually shorter than all of the other trailers -- but there's a frenetic energy to it that once again reminds us that even in a summer with Avengers and Ant-Man, Mad Max: Fury Road is possibly our most anticipated movie. Oh, and if you...

'Shaft' Reboot? Shut Your Mouth!

Posted: 19 Feb 2015 01:30 PM PST

Way back in 1971, John Shaft was a trailblazing character, an assertive African-American private investigator played by Richard Roundtree who never backed down from the police and was catnip to the ladies. Shaft won an Academy Award for Isaac Hayes' iconic theme song and was a big hit at the box office, spawning two sequels. It also inspired a remake in 2000, starring Samuel L. Jackson as the nephew of John Shaft, who faced off against the villainous Christian Bale. Now a new version is under development, with veteran producer John Davis (Predator) and his production company taking charge for New Line studio. No other details have been revealed yet, although The Wrap is reporting that a new actor will be cast in the lead role. While the original Shaft was very much a...

Deadpool: Morena Baccarin will star in the female lead role opposite Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool. The actress has built geek credibility through a series of appearances in everything from Firefly to The Flash and Gotham, not to mention voice work in Justice League and Son of Batman, plus dramatic roles in shows like Homeland (above). The Deadpool supporting cast includes T.J. Miller and Gina Carano; the movie is set for release on February 12, 2016. [Heat Vision]   The Last Witch Hunter: Vin Diesel is featured in the latest image from The Last Witch Hunter, looking quite pensive.
