Paul Walker's 10 Best Moments, from 'Joy Ride' to 'Eight Below'

Posted: 23 Apr 2014 08:00 PM PDT

The tragic death of Paul Walker still stings. One of the most reliable and entertaining leading men in mainstream Hollywood, Walker had the rare ability to find the exact right groove in silly material. He could take the goofiest material imaginable and treat it with just enough respect to make you buy it without ever forgetting to actually keep it fun. This served him well in the Fast and Furious franchise, but it also allowed him to emerge as a capable star in other genres, where he was frequently cast as a professional everyman. To watch a Paul Walker performance is to watch a guy who never phoned it in. With Brick Mansions hitting theaters, it's time to pay tribute to the late, great Mr. Walker. His career may have been tragically cut short, but these are the 10 best...

Comics on Film: Why It's Not Fair to Compare 'Man of Steel' to 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier'

Posted: 23 Apr 2014 07:00 PM PDT

When it comes to superheroes, who have been in publication for over 75 years, films have a gray area regarding the rules of adaptation. As the times change, these characters do too, but there's also an intangible element that will definitively make Batman, well, Batman. A detectable truthfulness exists in each character adapted to the screen, but the rules for what constitutes that truthfulness change from character to character. There's a fine balance, of course, since straying too far from the source can give us outlandish character representations like Batman & Robin or Spider-Man 3, but staying too close can polarize general audiences and critics as happened with the likes of Watchmen and Sin City. I bring this up because...

See the Best Action Scenes Ever According to 'The Raid 2' Director Gareth Evans

Posted: 23 Apr 2014 06:00 PM PDT

Action cinema fans know the name Gareth Evans, and the rest of the world is starting to take notice. The Raid 2, currently in theaters, continues Evans’ Indonesian crime saga about a rookie cop who becomes embroiled in a criminal underworld after being trapped in a Jakarta tenement. Evans helped introduce the Indonesian martial art pencak silat to mainstream audiences, choreographing stunning fight sequences and shooting gonzo-style action scenes. Naturally, we’re curious about his favorite fights in cinema, so the good folks at SlashFilm read our minds and spoke to the filmmaker to find out more. Evans discusses his top five favorite action scenes in film in this video, and leads the discussion with two Jackie Chan movies. Sammo Hung’s Wheels on Meals features...

How a Virtual Reality Demo Showed Us the Future of Movies

Posted: 23 Apr 2014 05:00 PM PDT

Last year the Tribeca Film Festival launched a Storyscapes section, which was this really cool corner of the fest that featured a group of interactive storytelling experiences. (Here's a gallery of images from the 2013 exhibition, with notes about each project.) These weren't full-length movies, per se, but art installations that all had one thing in common: audience control. Essentially, you were in charge of creating your own experience of a story being presented to you.  For its 2014 exhibition, Storyscapes continued that same theme, except unlike last year all of their projects felt a lot more connected to one another. After touring them all ahead of its public debut, the biggest takeaway I had was that in a small, pretty magnificent way, I was actually...

Bollywood Does 'Avatar': Get a Look at India's First 3D, Motion-Captured Film

Posted: 23 Apr 2014 04:00 PM PDT

Bollywood cinema has come a long way in a very short amount of time – and now India is set to tackle a new cinematic frontier with the release of its first 3D motion-capture animated feature, the epic adventure film Kochadaiiyaan: The Legend. Unfortunately, Kochadaiiyaan has garnered some negative publicity for the quality of its digital animation. Yes, the visuals look incredibly simplistic compared to something like James Cameron’s Avatar, but it’s easy to forget that this is Bollywood’s first attempt at this kind of film. We weren’t exactly knocking it out of the park in the early days of computer-generated imagery, either – and we were working with significantly larger budgets. Kochadaiiyaan may not look as cutting edge as the CG...

See the First Photos from 'Jurassic World,' Plus Confirmation of Animatronic Dinosaurs and Sequels

Posted: 23 Apr 2014 03:00 PM PDT

Jurassic World has begun filming in Hawaii, and to celebrate the studio has started dribbling out some fun tidbits for fans. Entertainment Weekly had the premiere of a trio of images from the set, which are the first official images from the movie. The most interesting picture is the one above of star Bryce Dallas Howard. We obviously shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but all-white dress, red hair and appropriately sharp business haircut has us pinning her down as someone who is up to no good-- or at least works for someone who is up to no good. Then again, maybe we're just projecting since she looks eerily like she could be the flashback version of Fringe's Nina Sharp. EW has two more pictures from the set, but they're fairly nondescript. One is of a...

Peeps Candy and a Classic Disney Ride Are Getting Their Own Movies

Posted: 23 Apr 2014 02:00 PM PDT

Nostalgia is a potent elixir, and Hollywood continues to tap into the warm fuzzies of our youth — as our report on the Goonies sequel earlier this week demonstrates. Today, it’s a gooey Easter candy and a popular Walt Disney theme park ride stealing the hearts. The multicultural musical attraction It’s a Small World, featuring over 300 animatronic children boasting colorful outfits from around the globe, has spooked a few kids over the years — but its message of unity and global peace makes it a memorable experience. The Walt Disney Company is borrowing a page from its successful Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and hoping to repeat history by adapting the theme park ride into a film. Disney has snagged filmmaker Jon Turteltaub to direct the...

'Frozen' Will Get a Broadway Musical Before a Big-Screen Sequel

Posted: 23 Apr 2014 10:19 AM PDT

Ever since Disney's Frozen turned into this phenomenon that has now placed it among some of the highest grossing movies of all time, fans have been eager to learn what's next, especially in an age where almost every successful movie immediately gets a sequel. Things are different with Frozen, though, because it was really the ridiculously catchy songs that turned it into a hit, and if you look back at Disney Animation's track record when it comes to its musical movies (The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast), none of them have gotten straight-up, big-screen sequels. Instead, we saw straight-to-DVD sequels and Broadway musicals. If we go by Disney chief Alan Horn's recent comments, it would appear they're not changing that format...
