The Geek Beat: The Most -- and Least -- Successful Marvel Movies, by the Numbers

Posted: 15 Apr 2014 08:00 PM PDT

A month ago, I waded through the box office reports and aggregate reviews of all the movies based on video games over the years to find out how they ranked as far as ticket sales and overall approval from audiences. It was an interesting experiment that offered up some surprises as far as the relationship (or lack thereof) between a film's success at the box office and how it's received by fans and critics alike. With Captain America: The Winter Soldier still enjoying a nice run in theaters after an impressive premiere, I thought it would be fun to look at how the latest installment of Marvel's cinematic universe stacks up against its peers. Before I get number crunching, though, a brief note: given that The Winter Soldier is still in theaters, I decided to compare its...

New on DVD/Blu-ray: 'Ride Along' with Kevin Hart, and Go Vintage Noir with 'Touch of Evil'

Posted: 15 Apr 2014 07:00 PM PDT

Touch of Evil - Universal - Blu-ray Director: Orson Welles Cast: Charlton Heston, Janet Leigh, Orson Welles, Joseph Calleia, Akim Tamiroff. Citizen Kane is the movie people most readily associate with Orson Welles, but if that's the only of Welles' films you've seen, then you absolutely must grab this new Blu-ray release of his 1958 crime noir Touch of Evil. It's an all-around smart, intense, twisty story about murder and corruption featuring a dynamite cast and a flawless command of so many of the elements that make noir such a beloved genre. Plus, it has one of the best tracking shots of all time. If you're the type of modern film fan who instinctively avoids most older movies, especially if they're in black and white...

Paul Walker's Brothers Will Help Finish His Role in 'Fast & Furious 7'

Posted: 15 Apr 2014 06:00 PM PDT

It's never easy when an actor dies during the production of a film. Not only is it hard on friends, families, cast and crew, but it creates a delicate question about what should be done to finish the film without them. Do you cut out their character? Do you recast them? Do you shoot body doubles? There's no right or wrong answer, really, but for fans of Paul Walker and the Fast and Furious franchise, it seems like Universal has found a very appropriate approach. According to a note it released to fans on its Facebook page, Walker's brothers have joined the film to help smooth over any missing elements that Paul hadn't filmed before his shocking death last November. And if you are indeed a fan of the series, you'll know how fitting it is that...

'Maps to the Stars' Trailer: Robert Pattinson and David Cronenberg Reveal the Weird and Sexy Side of Celebrity

Posted: 15 Apr 2014 05:00 PM PDT

After languishing in development hell for more than five years, David Cronenberg’s Maps to the Stars finally has two new clips to boast about — although one feels more like a rough sketch. Maps to the Stars is Cronenberg’s Hollywood opus à la David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive (but perhaps heavier on the absurdist side), commenting on the industry’s relationship with Western culture, centered on a dysfunctional Tinseltown family. The cast couldn’t be better: Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska (who is quickly becoming our go-to creepy girl, taking over for Christina Ricci), John Cusack, and Robert Pattinson (his second go-round with the director). "Maps to the Stars is very extreme. It's not obviously a very big commercial...

Hey Ladies: 'Magic Mike 2' Will Hit Theaters on July 3, 2015

Posted: 15 Apr 2014 03:00 PM PDT

. Steven Soderbergh’s film Magic Mike, about sensitive beefcake dancer Mike Lane and based on the real-life exploits of former male-revue-fleshpot-turned-actor Channing Tatum, became a sensation in 2012. The film grossed $167 million worldwide and launched its lead into stardom. Since then, the stripper-with-a-heart-of-gold story has been bandied about with regards to a sequel and a Broadway musical. Collider brings word that part two of Tatum’s tale (he’s been writing the script this go-round) is moving forward and will possibly head before the cameras later this year. During press rounds for Sabotage, star Joe Manganiello (who played stud Big Dick Richie in the first film) gave up the goods: “Yeah, it’s gonna happen this fall. I think...

'Friday the 13th' Is Being Rebooted Again and May Now Have a 'V/H/S' Director

Posted: 15 Apr 2014 02:00 PM PDT

The 2009 reboot of Friday the 13th never got the credit it deserved. It was a slick, sexy updating of the classic slasher. It's fun, it's faithful to the original, and it's actually one of the best Friday the 13th films the franchise has ever had. But apparently $65 million at the box office ($91 million global) is not enough money, and so now the producers of that movie are pretending it never existed and doing yet another reboot.  The Wrap is now reporting that producers Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form have decided on director David Bruckner for the new version, and as much as I'd have rather seen Marcus Nispel's 2009 version get a sequel, he is an encouraging choice. Bruckner was one of the cowriter/directors on the sci-fi film The Signal, and he...

Harrison Ford Narrates This 'Empire Strikes Back' Trailer with Alternate Luke/Leia Kiss

Posted: 15 Apr 2014 01:00 PM PDT

We've always found it interesting that many movie trailers feature footage and scenes that are nowhere to be found in the finished movie. Since previews are often assembled before the final cut of a film is locked, there’s a good chance the person creating the trailer will pull footage that gets chopped from the finished print. Sometimes the stuff is minor and inconsequential. Other times, it’s a pretty big deal because it feels like a bit of a bait and switch. Either way, this “lost footage” gives fans a way to see things that were filmed but not used, which is always neat to watch. Everyone loves The Empire Strikes Back, so people will be interested in seeing a few sequences in this clip that didn’t make the movie. Harrison Ford actually...

Meet Captain America's Badass Stunt Double

Posted: 15 Apr 2014 12:00 PM PDT

They’re the unsung heroes of cinema – the men and women who make all those superhuman feats in action and adventure movies possible. No, we’re not talking about the visual effects team – we’re talking about stunt people. CBS Sunday Morning recently did a feature on the role these performers play in making movie magic come to life, and if you’re curious about the history of stunts in Hollywood and some of the folks who make the impossible possible, this is essential viewing.   The 10-minute segment covers a lot of ground – from some of the earliest stunts ever captured, to more modern work on films like Captain America: The Winter Soldier (which includes lots of great insight from Chris Evans' stunt double Sam Hargrave...

Samuel L. Jackson Would Totally Do Another 'Die Hard' with Bruce Willis

Posted: 15 Apr 2014 11:00 AM PDT

We're long past due for a big-screen reunion between Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson, and our dreams of more wisecracking buddy comedy between the two may come true sooner than you think. According to rumblings around the movieverse, 20th Century Fox is interested in another Die Hard sequel starring both Willis and Jackson, who paired up in the funniest (and most entertaining, in our opinion) Die Hard sequel, Die Hard with a Vengeance. The latest rumor comes from industry scooper El Mayimble over at Latino Review, who took to Twitter with the news.   TWITTER SCOOP: FOX is meeting writers for takes on next DIE HARD. It has to involve John McClane AND Samuel Jackson's Zeus Carver character! — elmayimbe (@elmayimbe) April 14, 2014   Of course...
