The 10 Scariest Ghost Movies

Posted: 22 Apr 2014 08:00 PM PDT

For as long as there have been stories, there have been ghosts. So it only makes sense that there have been ghosts for as long as there have been movies. Every other horror movie seemingly deals with the undead in some way, but ghosts are a special breed. They're frequently just as pitiful as they are scary, aimless spirits who only seek to tidy up the business they left behind on Earth. However, some are malevolent, angry forces whose rage was powerful enough to tie them to the mortal plane. In both cases, they provide the perfect excuse for filmmakers to make movies where creepy things suddenly appear and make you jump out of your seat. With The Quiet Ones opening soon, we combed through horror history and pulled out 10 of the scariest ghost movies ever made. These...

The Geek Beat: Why a 'Farscape' Movie Matters and Spider-Man Should Swing Solo

Posted: 22 Apr 2014 07:00 PM PDT

Is it just me, or has there been a lot of headlines coming from the geekier side of Hollywood lately? Between all of the fanboy-friendly films hitting theaters and the kickoff of convention season with one of the year's first big shows, WonderCon, there's been no shortage of material in the news cycle for anyone interested in superhero and sci-fi fare. That's why this week's column is a two-parter of sorts, offering up some food for thought on a pair of big stories: the possibility of a Farscape movie and the likelihood of Spider-Man crossing over into other superhero franchises. Both of these stories have generated quite a bit of buzz since they hit the Net, and they're continuing to do so offline, too – and for good reason. During WonderCon, Farscape...

Giveaway: Win a 'Brick Mansions' Prize Pack of Paul Walker Action Movies, Athletic Wear and More

Posted: 22 Apr 2014 06:00 PM PDT

This week Brick Mansions hits theaters. It stars Paul Walker as a cop who must infiltrate a neighborhood filled with criminals in order to stop a crime lord from blowing up the entire city. If that plot sounds familiar, it's because this is actually a remake of the fantastic French movie District: B13. This isn't just some random cash-in remake that pretends like the original doesn't exist, though. Walker's costar in the film is actually the star of the original film, David Belle. To get you pumped up for Brick Mansions, we've been given a pretty great prize package that one lucky winner can take home. It contains a handful of recent action movies on Blu-ray, as well as a trio of gear branded for the film made by Take Flight Apparel, creators of high-quality...

Len Wiseman to Direct 'Black Chapter,' About Government Spies with Supernatural Powers

Posted: 22 Apr 2014 05:00 PM PDT

Superhero movies have been big business for quite some time now, but not every production company out there has access to a Marvel or DC Comics character, so every now and then we see a studio attempt at making its own superhero-esque franchise. Some of the most notable examples are Push, Hancock and Chronicle, and while they all have their fans, none have gone on to become franchises. And now we can add a new title to that roster of not-quite-superhero superhero movies: Black Chapter. Written by Zak Penn (X-Men 2, Elektra, The Avengers) and directed by Len Wiseman (Live Free or Die Hard, Total Recall), Black Chapter is about an FBI agent ushered into a secret government program that trains people to develop and use paranormal abilities. Apparently the idea came about after...

The Writers of 'Transformers,' 'Star Trek,' 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' and Many More Are Breaking Up

Posted: 22 Apr 2014 03:00 PM PDT

We typically don't cover Hollywood breakups, but this particular one warrants a mention: prolific screenwriting duo Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are calling it quits together. Professionally speaking, at least. They may well still be friends, and are apparently going to continue to work on their already established TV series together (Hawaii Five-0 and Sleepy Hollow), but they will now be going their separate ways when it comes to big-screen work. This is kind of a big deal because they've been the biggest screenwriting and producing duo in the business for quite a while now. Together they've either written or produced The Island, Legend of Zorro, Mission: Impossible III, Transformers, Star Trek, Cowboys & Aliens, Star Trek Into Darkness, Transformers: Revenge...

Listen to Free Film Lessons from Aaron Sorkin, Jon Favreau and More Thanks to the Tribeca Film Festival

Posted: 22 Apr 2014 02:00 PM PDT

Ah, film festivals. Where else can you soak in the cinema with a group of fellow cinephiles and hear commentary from directors and their hardworking cast members all in the same day? The 2014 Tribeca Film Festival is underway, and the movie gods behind the famed New York City gathering have gifted us with an audio series of Tribeca talks featuring some of our favorite filmmakers. Yesterday we featured a conversation with former heavyweight fighters Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield discussing the new documentary Champs, but there's more where that came from.  The Social Network writer Aaron Sorkin chats with fellow scribe Jon Favreau about heroes, being “moral” in 2014, and making the change from analogue to digital in moviemaking. Also featured is a...

Is a Remake of Eli Roth's 'Cabin Fever' in the Works?

Posted: 22 Apr 2014 01:00 PM PDT

This summer sees the release of Cabin Fever: Patient Zero – the third film in the bio-horror series that made Eli Roth a household name for horror fans. The franchise’s flesh-eating virus seems like the kind of thing that could be used to tell hundreds of different stories in sequels for years to come – so naturally, that means it’s time to scrap all that and reboot it. Bloody-Disgusting reports that sources at Cannes are telling them that a remake of the 2002 film is ready to get underway. This comes as surprising news, since it’s only been 12 years since the original film debuted, and it means that the planned fourth entry in the series, Cabin Fever: Outbreak, is officially dead. It seems unlikely that Roth will be intimately involved in the...

Learn Why One Crazy Fan Hopes to Collect Every VHS Copy of Keanu Reeves' 'Speed'

Posted: 22 Apr 2014 12:00 PM PDT

One of the ultimate popcorn thrillers, Jan de Bont’s Speed is white-knuckle ‘90s escapism at its finest. The premise is absurd: Keanu Reeves plays a mumble-mouthed cop who must keep a city bus speeding down the Los Angeles highways above 50 mph if he wants to stop a bomb aboard the bus from exploding. Sandra Bullock plays the wisecracking, nerve-racked passenger who is forced to take control of the wheel. The film also boasts some clever script work from Joss Whedon and a vote of approval from Quentin Tarantino — who was offered the directing spot, but turned it down to work on Pulp Fiction.  There are plenty of Speed fans out there, but the ultimate Speed freak (ahem) has to be Ryan Beitz — who owns over 500 copies of the movie on VHS. There...

Sequel News: Check Out Updates for 'Bad Boys 3,' 'Batman vs. Superman,' 'Resident Evil 6' and More

Posted: 22 Apr 2014 11:00 AM PDT

Last week, Jerry Bruckheimer was busy talking about sequels to Beverly Hills Cop, Top Gun and Pirates of the Caribbean. This week, he tackles some of his other projects, most notably the Bad Boys sequel he keeps teasing us with, as well as another National Treasure movie.  Bruckheimer assures Collider that both films are going to happen. The hold up with Bad Boys 3 appears to be one of scheduling. “It’s so funny because we’ll get Sony real excited to make the movie, and then Will [Smith] is off doing two movies. And then, Will will come back and be real excited about it, and Sony will say, ‘Well, maybe it’s not the time for this.’ And then, Ride Along came out and was a big hit, and now they’re all excited to make the movie, but...
