Ranking the Major Performances of Johnny Depp

Posted: 16 Apr 2014 07:00 PM PDT

Few actors have been as adventurous or as weird, and few have risen to stardom so fast. Johnny Depp's filmography is as strange and varied as anyone's. With Transcendence hitting theaters this week, it's time to look back over the career of Johnny Depp and craft the definitive ranking of his performances. Here are our rules: only major roles are eligible (so no A Nightmare on Elm Street or The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus) and voice work in animated movies won't be ranked (so no Corpse Bride or Rango). The Brave is not ranked because it's still unavailable and unseen in North America. From worst to best, here are the 29 major Johnny Depp performances, ranked in quality. 29. Mad Hatter (Alice in Wonderland) This is it -- the nadir of Johnny Depp. No...

Comics on Film: Will We See a Shared DC Comics Movie Universe?

Posted: 16 Apr 2014 06:00 PM PDT

For most of the past year, comic book movie fans have been taking the existence of a Justice League film for granted, even though the existence of such a project has yet to be officially confirmed. It's kind of hard to fault the reasoning, mostly because of A) the massive, influential success enjoyed by Marvel Studios across multiple films and mediums, B) Man of Steel had a number of comic book-centric Easter eggs peppered throughout it, and C) a sequel to that same film has been announced that features non-Superman characters like Wonder Woman, Alfred Pennyworth and, of course, the Batman.   DC Universe Progress After going from one film that introduces a new Superman to a direct sequel involving some of his most famous fellow DC Comics...

Welcome to the YA Movie Countdown, our resident expert’s biweekly guide to young-adult book-to-film adaptations. Clearly the young-adult book-to-film adaption craze isn’t slowing down anytime soon, but it seems as though the success of Divergent may have triggered a few major steps forward because we’ve got new details on three high-profile projects.   First Clip from The Fault in Our Stars If you thought the chemistry between Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort in the trailer for The Fault in Our Stars was palpable, just wait until you catch the first clip from the Josh Boone adaptation. In the film, Woodley leads as Hazel, a 16-year-old cancer patient. She manages to survive with stage four thyroid cancer with metastasis forming in her...

Watch: Pixar Reveals a Few of the Easter Eggs Hidden in Its Movies

Posted: 16 Apr 2014 04:00 PM PDT

If you’re a hard-core Pixar fan, then you no doubt realize the animation studio loves to put little Easter eggs into each and every one of its movies. These hidden nods to earlier films delight those who catch them, even if they’re not integral to the stories being told. Pixar has been doing this for years, but it’s only now that it has started chronicling them for the public. This new video, starring Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich, reveals some of the hidden delights from movies like Up, Cars and Ratatouille. It’s by no means all inclusive – which is a minor disappointment – but maybe the studio will make more of these cool little videos if fans like this one. Things kick off with the Luxo Jr. ball, then move on to grape soda...

Trailer Roundup: 'If I Stay,' 'Third Person' and 'Rosemary's Baby'

Posted: 16 Apr 2014 03:00 PM PDT

If I Stay Chloe Grace Moretz’ latest picture If I Stay? is bridging the gap between her genre roles and the dramatic parts she seems to be headed toward. The tearjerker, based on the popular YA book of the same name by Gayle Forman, finds the Carrie star playing a cellist named Mia, who falls in love with the rocker guy at school. A devastating accident throws everything to the fates and leaves the young student in a coma. Spirit separated from body, Mia is forced to watch helplessly as her loved ones plea with her to “stay.” For an out-of-body experience with a side of teen tragedy, catch If I Stay in theaters on August 22.   Third Person If you’ve recovered from the awfulness of Crash, Paul Haggis has another potentially nauseating...

Nerd Alert: See What Batman, Superman and Wolverine Would Look Like with Iron Man Armor

Posted: 16 Apr 2014 02:00 PM PDT

With four superhero movies arriving in theaters within the span of only a few months, it's safe to say we've got the cape-wielding, wall-crawling, claw-tastic heroes on our minds as the summer blockbuster season approaches. Here's some really cool fan art from a visual artist named "Boss Logic" [via Design Taxi] who took some pop-culture favorites and reimagined them wearing an Iron Man suit.  The results are pretty cool, especially when it comes to Batman's new look. While we'll most likely never see a DC superhero go anywhere near the armor of a Marvel hero, you can't deny how much fun it is to imagine a world where Batman can shoot laser beams out of the Bat logo on his chest. Maybe Zack Snyder can incorporate that into Ben Affleck's...

Don't Freak Out Just Yet About the 'X-Men' Scene at the End of 'Amazing Spider-Man 2'

Posted: 16 Apr 2014 01:00 PM PDT

Most movie fans have come to expect that last little, stinging tease of a scene at the end of a superhero movie. So naturally a lot of people seeing The Amazing Spider-Man 2 are going to stay through the credits in anticipation of a stinger teasing one of the approximately 9,000 Spider-Man spin-off movies in the works. Those people are probably going to be pretty surprised to see mutants from X-Men: Days of Futre Past pop up on-screen instead. However, don't freak out yet. It doesn't mean what you think it means. No, we're not getting a Spider-Man/X-Men crossover movie anytime soon. The news of the X-Men stinger on ASM2 comes out of the U.K., where the latter film opens this week, but before you start geeking out about Spidey and Wolverine kicking ass together...

Watch: Are These the 10 Greatest Long Takes in Movie History?

Posted: 16 Apr 2014 11:00 AM PDT

The extended take is one of the flashiest moves in any director’s playbook – filming a long and intricate scene in one continuous shot requires precision, coordination, dedication and sometimes a little luck. Nail it, though, and you’ll have the admiration of movie geeks for all eternity. I wrote a piece a few years back chronicling 10 of my favorite extended-take sequences of all time, but there were a lot of scenes that didn’t make the cut. Now, the folks over at Cinefix have compiled their own video celebration of these amazing sequences – and they’ve hit a few that I didn’t. So, if you love lengthy and complicated sequences where everything has to be exactly right or everyone has to start over, check out these fantastic choices...

Final 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' Trailer Is a Brilliant Mix of Characters and Action

Posted: 16 Apr 2014 10:00 AM PDT

You better sit down for this one. The third and final trailer for Marvel's X-Men: Days of Future Past has arrived, and it's rather brilliant. In fact, you might need an adult beverage after watching it, just like Wolverine. If you haven't seen anything about the movie so far, it will catch you up with the basic premise and stakes involved. On the other hand, if you've been faithfully following the trailers, TV spots and clips as they've been released, you'll be rewarded, too, with a different focus on the story and the characters, and some new footage.   This trailer appears to spend the balance of its time in the 1970s, as Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) arrives from the future to recruit Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), Beast (Nicholas Hoult...
