What Screenwriter Will Immediately Draw You to a Movie?

Posted: 21 Apr 2014 08:00 PM PDT

One movie premiering this week at the Tribeca Film Festival that has gotten a lot of attention is In Your Eyes. The reason isn't necessarily because of great buzz (though it's getting decent reviews) or who stars in it (Zoe Kazan and Michael Stahl-David) or who directed it (relative unknown Brin Hill) or even because it was just announced as being immediately available to rent through Vimeo On Demand following its debut in New York. The biggest reason for its attention is who wrote it: Joss Whedon. It's not that common these days for writers to be the main draw for a movie, not unless they're also the director. Consistently notable scribes like Woody Allen, Quentin Tarantino, the Coen brothers, Sofia Coppola, Mike Leigh, David Mamet and many more who also helm...

New on DVD/Blu-ray: A William Friedkin Classic Finally Arrives in HD

Posted: 21 Apr 2014 07:00 PM PDT

Sorcerer - Warner Bros. - Blu-ray Director: William Friedkin Cast: Roy Scheider, Bruno Cremer, Francisco Rabal, Peter Capell, Ramon Bieri. Full cast + crew I actually have never seen Sorcerer, but here's what I know: many think it's William Friedkin's greatest film, it's been overshadowed by big commercial hits of his like The Exorcist and The French Connection, and it's a remake of The Wages of Fear. I also know that Warner Bros.' new Blu-ray for the film features a complete remaster of the movie and is the closest possible version of Friedkin's original vision for this film about four men who are transporting dynamite through a South American jungle. Special Features: None beyond a beautiful, proper HD restoration...

Danny Boyle May Direct Leonardo DiCaprio in Aaron Sorkin's 'Steve Jobs' Movie

Posted: 21 Apr 2014 06:12 PM PDT

Recently David Fincher dropped out of the running to direct a movie about Steve Jobs, written by his Social Network pal Aaron Sorkin, who adapted it from Walter Isaacson's popular biography on the Apple cofounder. Now The Hollywood Reporter tells us Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) is in talks to direct, and he wants to reunite with his The Beach star Leonardo DiCaprio, who would take on the role of Steve Jobs. Aaron Sorkin is one of the best known names in the screenwriting business, and for a very simple reason: he's damned good at it. The man simply does not have a bad screenplay to his name. Quite the opposite, in fact. Between A Few Good Men, The American President, Charlie Wilson's War, Malice, Moneyball and The Social Network, Sorkin has one of the best...

Watch: Richard Linklater's Inspiring Lecture on Writing, the Film Industry and Everything In Between

Posted: 21 Apr 2014 05:00 PM PDT

Love filmmaking? Then of course you want to delve into the mind of indie-film icon, slacker cinephile, and DIY favorite Richard Linklater. Tumblr all-star Cinephilia and Beyond spotted a lecture with the director, which starts off with a discussion about storytelling and dives into his thoughts on writing, the industry and other methodologies. The talk has a great casual tone, mirroring the laid-back filmmaker, and is part of Fox Searchlight’s Searchlab lecture series, meant to take us inside the minds of great directors working today. It’s about 40 minutes long, but it makes for great lunch/dinner-break viewing, and Linklater has yet to disappoint with his candor about the filmmaking process. He’s quick to let us know that he thinks the term “independent...

8 Things We Learned from Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield at the Premiere of Their New Film 'Champs'

Posted: 21 Apr 2014 04:00 PM PDT

The 2014 Tribeca Film Festival is in full swing, and this past weekend saw one of the fest's most anticipated events: the premiere of the documentary Champs, followed by a special conversation with former heavyweight boxing champions Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield. The film is an intriguing look back at the boxing careers of Tyson, Holyfield and WBA light-heavyweight world champion Bernard Hopkins, all of whom were forced to overcome broken homes, poverty--and in some cases the prison system--in order to eventually become some of boxing's greatest fighters. Along with interviews and dramatic re-creations, Champs not only documents the last great, memorable heavyweight boxing moments, but it also takes a real harsh look at the sport itself and why it's taking...

Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg Are Planning Another War Film Together

Posted: 21 Apr 2014 03:00 PM PDT

Steven Spielberg has only directed Tom Hanks in three feature films (Saving Private Ryan, Catch Me if You Can and The Terminal). It seems like a lot more than that, however, because when the pair get together, the results seem so effortless you'd think they made every film together. Sadly they haven't made a film together in the decade since The Terminal, though that could soon change. The Wrap is reporting that both Hanks and Spielberg have just become attached to a new, currently untitled war thriller. This time around the duo would be setting their sights on the Cold War to tell the true story of James B. Donovan, the lawyer who helped negotiate the release of pilot Gary Powers after Russia shot down his spy plane. A courtroom thriller where we all know the outcome may...

See an Indie Director's Funny Message to People Who Pirate His Movie

Posted: 21 Apr 2014 02:00 PM PDT

While we tend to frown on pirating movies here at Movies.com (because if no one pays for movies, how will filmmakers ever find the funding to make more?), we’re not so naive as to believe that everyone out there is paying money to see the latest features. Filmmaker Jerome Sable appears to understand this as well, and when his slasher-musical Stage Fright landed on notorious torrent site the Pirate Bay earlier this month, he took to the comment section to leave this funny and good-humored missive: “Hello there! Jerome Sable here, writer-director of Stage Fright. For those of you who may be interested in downloading our bizarre little indie movie: I'm excited to share the movie with you, and I'm glad there are people out there interested to see this film...

Ryan Gosling Directed a Movie and It Looks Freakishly Cool

Posted: 21 Apr 2014 01:00 PM PDT

The Cannes Film Festival lineup looks incredible as always, and one star we’re used to seeing in front of the camera will be making his directorial debut at the French fest. We finally have an official synopsis for Ryan Gosling’s Lost River, which star Iain De Caestecker recently expanded upon during an interview. “All I can really say is that it centers around a family. There’s my character, Bones, his mother and his younger brother. There’s also a girl next door played by Saoirse Ronan, called Rat.” Gosling has indicated that the movie bears the marks of David Lynch's oeuvre, which seems evident in the above film still just released. That’s Christina Hendricks and… something terrible is happening we can’t quite...

Simon Kinberg Talks Candidly about 'Star Wars' Spin-offs, Marvel Crossovers and 'The Fantastic Four' Reboot

Posted: 21 Apr 2014 12:00 PM PDT

Writer and producer Simon Kinberg is a busy man these days – he’s got X-Men: Days of Future Past ready to hit theaters next month, and he’s hard at work on a Star Wars spin-off and the new Fantastic Four reboot. Luckily for us, Kinberg’s more than happy to talk about all his various projects, and has dropped some interesting clues about where each of the stories are heading. Kinberg reveals he’s a lot like the fans when it comes to the fractured state of the Marvel cinematic universe. Characters are split amongst several different studios, making an X-Men appearance in an Avengers movie, and countless other awesome crossovers, all but impossible. The screenwriter hopes it won’t always be this way – and news that (potential SPOILER in...

Richard Donner Confirms Steven Spielberg Came Up with the Story for 'The Goonies 2'

Posted: 21 Apr 2014 11:00 AM PDT

As we all know by now, everything old in Hollywood is new again. Case in point via today’s news: The Goonies. There’s been talk about a Goonies sequel for what feels like ages, with chatter about a comic book spin-off, a musical and an animated TV series, even. The heartfelt kid adventure tale directed by Richard Donner is a big nostalgia bomb, and it seems that writer, producer and second unit director Steven Spielberg isn’t willing to let go. Early reports of a part two indicated that Spielberg supported a sequel, but news was vague. However, Donner recently confirmed that, yes, Spielberg really did come up with the idea to do a second film and the storyline behind it. The Goonies lives! Most of the doubts expressed by Donner and company have...
