James McAvoy Would Love to Do More 'X-Men' Movies; Calls 'Logan' Brilliant

Posted: 05 Jan 2017 09:00 PM PST

The future of the main X-Men films is now up in the air, but the franchise as a whole received an injection of fresh, inventive spunk thanks to last year's R-rated Deadpool, and that new wave of edgier, riskier Marvel material will continue with this year's Logan. In that film, Patrick Stewart will once again reprise the role of Charles Xavier for a story set in the near future -- one that seems to pick up Xavier's journey at a time when he's aged considerably and isn't in the best shape, both physically and as it pertains to his powers. But what about the younger Xavier, who we last saw duke it out with Oscar Isaac's Apocalypse in last year's X-Men: Apocalypse. He was portrayed pretty brilliantly by James McAvoy throughout three films, and as those...

Watch How 'Rogue One' Resurrected Peter Cushing and What It Could Mean for the Future of 'Star Wars'

Posted: 05 Jan 2017 07:30 PM PST

Whatever you may think of the result, the effects wizardry that brought Peter Cushing back as Grand Moff Tarkin in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is ambitious and pioneering work. Thanks to a behind-the-scenes segment of ABC's Nightline and rumblings about the future of the Star Wars franchise following the death of Carrie Fisher, we have some updates on how that wizardry was achieved and how it might prove to be necessary -- presumably with some improvements -- going forward.  There are Rogue One and Star Wars: The Force Awakens SPOILERS below.   How Rogue One Brought Back Tarkin and Young Leia  If you've seen the movie, you know Cushing wasn't the only digitial resurrection in Rogue One. In...

Ryan Gosling Keeps His Movies-About-Music Streak Going With the SXSW Opening Night Film

Posted: 05 Jan 2017 06:00 PM PST

Terrence Malick doesn't make movies like other filmmakers. He's not concerned with having a strict script. Heck, he's seemingly not even concerned with knowing the full arc of a while he's filming. His process is incredibly fluid, often takes years, and results in movies that can radically transform with each pass in the editing room. You'd think that kind of unpredictability would scare off A-list actors, and yet Malick seems to wrangle together big name casts with unparalleled ease. Case in point, Song to Song, a drama about the Austin music scene that stars, among many others, Ryan Gosling, Natalie Portman, Michael Fassbender and Rooney Mara. Malick began filming the project years ago at the same time as Knight of Cups, which starred Christian Bale...

Everyone's Favorite Possessed Doll Is Coming Back In 'Cult of Chucky'

Posted: 05 Jan 2017 04:30 PM PST

The big horror franchises of the '80s followed a pretty similar life cycle. Churn out sequels year after year at first, slow down, eventually stop entirely, then reboot 20+ years later. Then, when the reboot doesn't hit big, get rebooted all over again just a few years later. That's the pattern Halloween, Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street all fell into. But one '80s horror icon escaped that trend: Chucky. Chucky, a doll possessed by the spirit of serial killer Charles Lee Ray, has managed to avoid remake frenzy by rediscovering himself throughout sequels. The first three Child's Play movies were all about a family dealing with a doll that wants to kill them, but then in the late '90s the filmmakers realized that people love Chucky less as a...

'Stomp the Yard' Director Set for 'Slender Man' Horror Thriller

Posted: 05 Jan 2017 03:00 PM PST

The movie will tap into a terrible legacy, detailed in a new HBO documentary. In an unexpected match of filmmaker and material, Sylvain White (Stomp the Yard, above left) will direct Slender Man, a thriller inspired by a horrible legacy. As reported by Deadline, the screenplay has been written by David Birke and will revolve around "a tall, thin horrifying figure with unnaturally long arms and a featureless face, who is reputed to be responsible for the haunting and disappearance of countless children and teens." For the past few years, White has been busy helming episodic television shows, but that includes serial killer drama The Following and horror fantasy Sleepy Hollow. Early in his career, he helmed the horror sequel I'll Always...

Is This Our First Tease of a Future Obi-Wan Kenobi 'Star Wars' Movie?

Posted: 05 Jan 2017 01:30 PM PST

The success of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story means we're going to get more Star Wars spin-off movies. The first of which is already happening, and it'll take place around the same time as Rogue One while also serving as an origin story of sorts for Han Solo. Disney/Lucasfilm will likely move forward with a third (and maybe fourth) spin-off film, but what they will be about is anyone's guess at this point. Originally plans were afoot for a Boba Fett-centric movie directed by Josh Trank, but that went away when Trank left the project. Many still think we'll see a Boba Fett movie -- or at the very least a bounty hunter-centric film -- while others are hot on the idea of an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie. Yes, the same Obi-Wan we've seen in all three prequel movies, as well...
